Does anyone here use longer than a 45 inch driver? How do you find it? I'm 6ft2 and feel like I could hit a 46 fine.

I'm 6'5 and mine is only 44 inches. I get the temptation sometimes to try a long shaft but I think I'd need to go extra stiff if I did. I couldn't see it adding much in terms of distance. Using a Hzrdus Smoke RDX Black 60 just now.

I'm sure I seen someone in here posting something about trialing shafts from a website?

So went out at my course last Thursday and as I walked off the 18th I said to my playing partner how shocking my game was.
I was complaining about everything. We then finalised the scores in MyEnglandGolf towards our Handicaps and it turns out I shot an 83
Yet to me I felt I played terrible. My driver especially putting me in trouble on numerous holes.

So today I'm going to Peak Performance Golf in Stourbridge for a 90min session. To either tweak my swing, tweak my driver or fit me for a completely new one for more consistency. The guys are also going to ball fit me during the process. This is something I've never done before so intrigued as to the process and results.

Will update with results later and hopefully with some pics of final results

I went out for morning golf today, the met office reckoned it'd be raining at the start but finish by 8...

It was indeed raining at the start but I boldly headed out, by 8:05 I'd done 3 holes it was just raining heavier with no sign of it stopping, so I bailed (4th tee is pretty close to the 1st/clubhouse so 'last chance'), it finally stopped raining about ~40 minutes later, I would've been utterly drenched and on the last hole probably by the time it stopped so good choice I reckon :p

The met office suck, they literally have one job and are so bad at that they could be replaced by someone looking out the bloody window. </rant>

Ball fitting? Does a pimply faced youth cup your balls and recommend the correct underwear for golf?

45 inches is industry standard. I think it's maybe an inch or so shorter for the ladies. That's off the rack of course, too bloody long either way if you ask me.

Oh ok then.
45 feels short to me. I think I'm weird.

I currently use a Cobra Amp 10.5 degree loft driver from about 2012. It has permanent adjustment for closed/neutral/open but not for loft.

My drives tend to go high and I feel like I could easily hit a 46. I was thinking to just buy an off the shelf 9 degree, super stiff, 46 inch driver. Is that a thing to get off the shelf 46 inches or does anything other than 45 require "custom fit"? I don't know what my swing speed is, but ball speed is 157mph.

Went out for 9 holes after work yesterday. Went pretty well, getting a little more consistency off the tee with my 2 iron. 5 over, not bad - cut my handicap down to 15.9, so I now need to give @Maccy another shot

Did an experiment on the 9th, which is a long downhill par 4 - hit driver, 3 wood and 2 iron. Rolled out to 306, 305 and 291 yards respectively

You'd be much better off going for a fitting of some sort, even if it was just to see what you're average club head speed with a Driver is, then you can try a few different shafts out. You'll likely have to pay if it's not American Golf, but at least then you won't waste a load of cash buying a club you think you can hit. You're going all in on a theory there with assuming less loft and longer, stiffer shaft is the solution to getting more penetrating drives. Any one of those changes could result in different outcome that you might not like.

Aye, our 10th is quite similair. Driver often isn't the play. If you can play a stingy low iron or 3 wood the the rollout will match most decent drives without the risk of straying so far off line.

Why X Stiff shaft?? What's your swing speed with driver?

I would guess at around 100-105mph (assuming your extremely efficient divide your ball speed by 1.5 to get swing speed but rarely is that the case)

Why 9 degree?

You won't get a 46" driver off the shelf.... Most are around 44.75/45 inches off the shelf.

If your serious about a new driver - get fitted properly for one. Why spend £500 on something you "hope" fits you.

Most places do free fittings or at least you pay a small fee that's deducted off the club if you buy it etc.

Longer shaft/less loft does not automatically mean lower and better flight.
Depends a lot on how you deliver the club head to the ball - in to out path? out to in path? hit up on the ball? hit down on the ball?

Even if you and I have the same swing speed/ball speed - clubs/shafts that suit us are likely to be completely different due to the way I deliver the clubhead to the ball.

So back from my fitting and I have to say what a delight we have locally in Stourbridge.
Old Pros from Hagley golf course who were given 4 weeks notice to pack up and leave as the owner wanted the shop for himself. :(

So as mentioned my Paradym was giving me some grief and I'd lost all confidence.
So 2 hour session for a driver fitting and some swing tweaks has given me a final club fitting of:

Titleist TSR3 B-1 setting. Natural weight.
Ventus Velocore Blue 6-S

"Getting fitted" fills me with fear to be honest. I don't like trusting salesmen. A salesman will try to sell me a driver based on data to support their monthly sales objectives and they'll likely be very expensive. I'm also not at a level where I hit clubs reliably well enough to do proper data gathering in my opinion. I do need to get some new woods though as my son's adopted the woods I was using, so I kind of was toying with the idea of picking up something cheaper second hand for a while and guessing on what to get.

I thought that a higher swing speed generally was better suited to stiffer shafts as otherwise you get too much whip. I'm not saying I'm high, but I've been told I swing faster than average.

If I go to American golf and get a fitting, can I walk out with my data and not buy a club if I decide they are too expensive? I'm not sure what to expect as never done it before.

If your worried about getting "sold" too - Go to your local pro shop or another fitter nearby.

If you pay for a fitting, you will get the information of the best club for you and you are under ZERO obligation to buy anything.

If your not happy - say thanks and walk away. Your paying for a service, you get your service, you leave.

Very few places sell on monthly sales objectives these days - The margins are small on clubs, and ultimately any sale is better than no sale so rarely will they "push" one brand over another.

I've been to loads of fittings, usually just a good excuse to play with new stuff.

Check out your local driving range/pro shop for fitting days etc - go have a play with stuff - don't be scared.

I've book a fitting with Scottsdale for £20 for 90 minute driver fitting - Hit some new clubs, mate coming with me, will do some lunch and hit some balls on the range. Good excuse to test some clubs and under zero obligation to buy anything
