Golf Thread

Had a really rubbish afternoon out on the course today. 3 of us and I was really looking forward to it. The groups on the 2 holes in front were just sooooo slow. No ready golf, waiting for the correct order on the green. They were not part of a comp and most of the time they would take 7 or 8 shots before reaching the green. Really made it impossible to get any tempo or flow. We ended up calling it quits at the end of the 12th after 3hrs40. Watching with some food the 18th we saw a big gap and then the first of the two groups roll up just as we were leaving.
Over 5hrs of playing time with no one infront :(

I just felt like a moan I guess. Hopefully everyone elses Saturday round went better than mine!

That sucks, where they 4 balls? I had a round like that last year, got stuck behind a 4 ball that wouldn’t let anyone play through, 3 hours to play 9 holes, I walked off after that.

3 hours for 9/3h40 for 12 is crazy! Course was fairly slow the past two days, just busy, but still was just under 2 hours for 9 yesterday and just over 4 for 18 today, including ~15 minutes stopped between 9's, that felt a bit slow but an extra 50% is mental!

Played so well today but blew it on the last 2 holes. Was net 65 (par 69) until 17 but threw away three shots on the last two... Heard people coming in at 66 so was a bit miffed and went home.

Feel like I gamed the system today! Back playing in Bristol and we decided to play off the white tees, it doesn't really make that much difference to the course, mostly just the par 3's, and adds 2 shots to my course handicap...

Got 19 shots, shot an 89 or +18, good times. Same score on Yellows would've been over my handicap instead it was just under.

I swear course ratings are far too biased by distance

Want to know what's even worse. Females. It's madness, I have a match play scenario where I'm playing a pair of ladies who I know for a fact play off the Yellows and whilst they don't hit it's 270 they are able to hit it 200..

The score rating for me is 114, for them it's 126 which is insane.. I'm giving someone with a handicap 2 shots worse than me 9 shots.

Had to happen one day...

Mate won his single tie tonight and I got a bye in the first round.... .We now play each other in the next round of the Club Single comp.

Strangely we've never played just two of us/matchplay even in a bounce game....Always in 3 or 4 balls.

The rest of the golf boys are wanting to come and watch...:D

I'll be giving away about 10 I think so tough game....

How is everyone finding the conditions of the local courses, here in Oxfordshire the 3 local courses I play regularly have all been very poor compared to this time of year normally. All are very dry with patchy fairways with bare spots and greens are similar also with patches and very bobbly, I know it has been a dry spring in the south of the country but it seems to have really hit the courses with the lack of rain I'm guessing being the issue.

I wouldn't say it's too bad here, just a bit further southwest. The rain a week or two ago helped though as after they hollow-tined the greens it was dry for ages and my local definitely wasn't great but after the rain seems to have improved and generally ok.

I have heard that Shrivenham near you was really bad though...

They were two 4 balls and seperate i think, that course is just going on my avoid list as they just dont manage it.

Played today though which made up for things, local course which was empty with glorius weather.

Yup, feel like the dry spring is really taking its toll ATM. Up until 3 weeks ago I would say my course was lush. Moisture still in the ground, now everything's dry as a bone!

Bone-dry here. Hasn't rained properly for weeks now - had a very, very brief (seconds) shower when we were playing on Sunday but that's been about it. The course I play the most is a proper links course and it's just rock solid everywhere, it's nice getting extra run on the fairway but landing a ball on the green is some challenge as it feels like concrete.

Had to send a long complaint email to the new(ish) general manager last week about the state of the course, thankfully I'm not alone as he's had a lot of complaints - main issue has been the tee boxes for us, not flat and just look like they've been dug up in places!

One of the courses I played last week the tee boxes looked like a kids sandpit where they had so many divots and then they had just chucked sand and grass seed all over it trying to get it growing again, very disappointed!

Greens are dreadful here at the moment - problem is - complaining just goes nowhere.... It's local authority owned and they literally don't care/respond etc.

Played last night and it's embarrassing how many bare patches and slow/bumpy the greens are.

Did laugh a lot last night - chunked a 3w off the tee like 150 yards....Pulled 7 iron from about 160.... thinned it so bad.... didn't see it into the glaring sun...

Walked up and it's 6 inches from the hole... Easy birdie.... with genuinely 2 of the worst shots I've hit in years.

To be fair to the GM, he's had an external company round to walk the course and highlight areas for improvement, and they've taken on another full time green keeper so I'm hopeful later in the year we'll see some improvements!
