Golf Thread

Just back from a week in Portugal, never thought i'd say it, but i think i'm over-golfed! 6 rounds in 7 days was probably a round too many. Played some lovely courses; Millenium, Vale Do Lobo Ocean & Royal, Quinta Do Lago North, San Lorenzo and Monte Rei. Pretty difficult conditions with strong winds most days. Stand out for me were QDL North, San Lorenzo and Monte Rei, with the latter probably being the hardest golf i've ever played with a tough course to begin with combined with wind that strong that you could play a 100yd shot which could be anything from 58* wedge to 4 iron!. Also the most bizarre day ever when we got hit by the power outage, finding your way back to a Villa without any navigation aids is challenging and then to have no power, first time i've been in bed at 9pm on a golf holiday!! :D

Played the Royal course last year, what a track that was. We also played the Solgado, Alamos and Morgado. All NAU Hotels courses. The Alamos was so much fun as well.

Poor Monthly Medal round yesterday - just not at the races at all....

Very poor of the tee yesterday with driver.

Anyway - sun cream back on, trolley battery charged and back out today in County competition for the "Presidents Putter" - it's one doubles match and 2 singles matches - point for each match - winner moves on. No games can end in a tie.

Anyone else managed to get a round in the nice weather this weekend? I'm just about to go play a nice course that I have not played. Meant to be quite tough but I'm just going to focus on enjoying the weather and less about the score today.

Presidents Putter match (one doubles and 2 singles ties)

Doubles boys batter the other side - 6&5... They were dormy 7 up!! :D

I was 1 down going onto the 18th....I lost when the other guy holed from the greenside bunker for birdie 4, after I'd just wedged it to about 3ft for a potential birdie as well... - To be fair I holed a totally disgusting putt on the 14th from an impossible place long right of the green.....so that was him getting his own back on me.

My other team mate won down the last with a stunning 3w from like 200 yards to about 3ft....

Overall we won 2-1 so into the quarter finals of the county tournament.

Lovely weather today as well - not a breath of wind...

So - after about a month with "the shanks", managed to put together a reasonable round yesterday - poor putting let me down - a couple of shanks worked their way in towards the end. Turns out (I think..), I was standing too close to the ball - so working on setting a consistent distance as part of my pre-shot routine seems to be helping. It's a work in progress, but in the meantime, my handicap has gone from a 8.4 to a 12.1

Got out yesterday in the glorious sunshine. Scored 103 had two horror show style holes, scoring a 9 and 10 on each of them. Admittedly they are two of the hardest holes on the course and both par 5. One of them I teed off and found the ball behind a tree had to put myself back on the fairway, then the next shot I over cooked it and ended up in the ditch what a pain to get out of. Definitely need to go back and have a lesson or two with my driver. This year it’s just awful. One swing and it’s a slice and the next a hook. I used it only twice yesterday, I stuck to my woods and hybrid for the tees.

Struggling to enjoy golf right now.

I'm at the point where I'm going to start doing rain dances to try and get some water to fall up here.

Was out on Sunday and yesterday morning, and the course we played is rock solid. It's great getting massive rollouts on the fairway but getting a ball to stick on the green is ridiculous. Feel sorry for the greenkeepers as I know it's a losing battle but they had to absolutely drench the greens/surrounds yesterday morning - it's that dry that all the water just pooled on the greens so I had no chance with being the first out. Everything within 30/40 yards was absolutely soaking and everything else was bone dry. No rain forecast here until next Friday after having had practically none over the past few weeks.

Just need to keep your chin up mate and plug away, you're right a lesson is the best way!

Just been out this morning on my own for a practice round. Need a par on the 18th to come in with a 78, break 80 and managed to hit my tee shot OB and finished with a double bogey 80, so disappointed with myself. Games feeling really good, had two eagle opportunities and 7-8 birdie looks. Just need to start taking them chances.

Had a driver fitting this morning at a local independent specialist, Nine by Nine Golf. Quite the eye opener  I know I have an out to in path but didn't realise just how big it is, up around 8-9° with a fairly neutral angle of attack. Definitely something to work on.

Anyway, I tried heads from most of the big names: Cobra, TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping & Titleist. All very different shapes to my current M4. The QI35 core model I tested looked massive and for whatever reason I just couldn't hit it at all, everything high right as I couldn't square the face. Ping SFT was good at straightening out my shot shape but still a little spinny like my current driver, which I found out was very spinny ( high 3000's). Cobra and Callaway were OK but not settling the world alight.

The Titleist GT3 was the last head I tested and for whatever reason it just clicked. 9° head lofted up to 9.75°, set in a draw setting with the adjustable weight in the heel. Even though my swing path crept a little more out to in I was consistently carrying just under 200y with a much straighter ball flight. Fitter then had me try a drill, placing a ball 30° or so out in front of my tee and asking me to swing towards that. Instantly reduced my swing path to around 3°, of course I was now leaving the face wide open so everything was going right. Amazing to see how I was able to shift it with the right combination of shaft, head, setup.

As a result an order has been placed. Bonus being because I wasn't fitted into an unessesarily expensive shaft the total cost was less than I had anticipated. I was prepared for £800+ but it came in under £700. They build everything in house so lead time was quoted at around four weeks. An agonising wait now :p

GT3 came out the top of my driver fitting too, the thing felt so solid and weighty. It's an absolute weapon.

And to continue what has so far been a good day I've just shot a new PB of 81 (+10) despite making a quad on the first! Rest of the round had eight pars, six bogeys, two birdies and one double. Nerves started to get the better of me on sixteen and seventeen but with a couple of lucky breaks and some good putting I pulled through :D

Samesies! :p

Had a driver fitting with Titleist back in January and got fit into a GT3 but because of lack of work (contracting) I put off buying. Went to AG for a fitting a bit ago and they fit me into a G440. But now I've got a contract again I finally booked a fitting at my local shop, mentioned the other two fittings and ended up trying the Qi35 again (just never got on with it, even though I like the looks), the Elyte standard and even Triple Diamond (nice tbh!), and the G440 both Max and LST as well as the GT3.

It boiled down to GT3 vs Elyte TD, which seems strange considering my swing is out-to-in and open face but hey :p

Bought the GT3, they had the right shaft combo (standard Project X shaft) in stock so already in the back \o/ It's such a lovely clean looking driver and just seems to work for me :)

Playing Cumberwell Park tomorrow so be interesting to see how it goes, although back 9 is the par 3 so not gonna get too many chances. Then St. Pierre on Thursday. Plenty of chances to get used to it :p

I really struggle with the concept of £700 for a driver. I am using a g400 that I bought second hand. I would like a GT2 but I will wait until it's 2 years old and pay £200.

I'm exactly the same, bought a G400 Max from golfclubsforcash last year, does the job. Still got a decent chunk of trade in value as well if/when I decide to move up to something else.

That's fair enough really, with the stock shaft mine was 'only' £579 and then I got 5% off for having the stores loyalty card thingy so slightly better... Still a lot of cash to drop on somethign that like you say isn't really that much better than a driver a few years old for less than half the price. It is shiny and new though

I'm also looking at new irons in a month or two as well, and for that I'd need to get new wedges to gap properly, I'm looking at the prices and thinking the Driver will be the cheap bit! :p

Played Cumberwell today with it, only hit 4 drivers and probably should've only hit 3 really, playing the white course which isn't very long so cutting corners and running through/into the rough was commonplace. The first was very much a power-fade as I was scared of going left, in hindsight that's a 5w all day long. The next 3 were lovely and straight, felt nice, distance not stunning more than I could've managed with my old one but it was consistent and all had reasons for not being longer (wind, running out of fairway into the rough etc).

Dunno what the Mathern course at St. Pierre is like but might have to wait till Sunday when I play a wide open course to really see what she can do :D

Sounds good fitting but with no shaft upcharge why £700?

You can order direct from Titleist in sub 2 weeks and it should be £579 (unless you add another £10 for a different grip etc)

I was £550 from local pro who ordered via Titleist rep - was in under a week.

The right choice

yeah - love the 54/58 I already have and the GW from my mizuno set just feels to "chunky" behind the ball from 100 yards...

It was 50 degrees so easy replacement

Team Match tonight
Club Doubles tomorrow night
2nd Round Club Champ qualifying Saturday
County Doubles Sunday

Lots of water and sun cream required.

I was still an aftermarket shaft I was fit into, just not one of those that costs £250-300!
