Golf Thread

Played ok Saturday but just one of those rounds where missing a few greens from sub 100 yards and then failing to get up and down.

Lost a ball on 16th and I was already +7 or something so brain just switched off. Get some practise in this week - Final booked for 4pm Friday - year long singles knockout. 6 games to get there.

See what happens.

Game of 2 halves over the weekend. Been suffering with the dreaded shanks for a while - put a lot of work into setup and swing tempo recently - and it's starting to pay off. Struggled round with an 89 on Friday, chipping and putting was terrible. No massive mistakes barring a couple of topped shots, just couldn't put it together.

Then on Sunday - carded a 77 :D - swing was working well - only one wide approach shot, chipping and putting was working really well! Was strong off the tee with my 2 iron as well - left the driver and hybrid in the bag. Seems to work so I'll keep doing that!

Now watch me shoot a 95 next time..

Anyone got any recommendations for flight bags.
I am flying TAP, its hard to work out if clubs are included in the allowance anyone know.

I am flying TAP, its hard to work out if clubs are included in the allowance anyone know.

I've got some advice having flown twice this year with clubs.

First of all, I got the same one Booyaka said,, the Mcgregor one. To be honest it's ok, but mine did suffer a puncturing tear to the backside material on it's first trip! I got Mum to sew a patch in as a repair lol. Anyway the reason it happened is because I packed a stand bag and the top part of the legs protrude out a bit and this obviously rubbed against the bag. I've seen first hand what the baggage handlers do to the clubs. They ABSOLUTELY WILL BE CHUCKED AGGRESSIVELY and take loads of knocks. Remember, the handlers are picking up MULTIPLE buggies and car seats at each end, and treat all oversized baggage as the same. It will get battered.

So this is how I pack...

Buy some gaffer tape and have some cardboard and packaging material/bubble wrap/sponge or something handy.

- I take the heads off all woods and tape up the top and bottom to stop the screw falling out and getting lost. I then place them inside their covers and pack these inside the main golf bag surrounded by other soft things I am taking as well.
- I put socks on all the irons to stop them clattering against each other
- I place a crutch (as in from a pair of crutches we seem to have from old injuries!) inside the Golf bag and this is extended to be the longest item so any hits to the top hit the crutch first. There is a thing you can buy which does this exact job. You can search for "golf club shaft protector" or something like that. You could truly use anything you want as the brace.
- I then wrap a load of gaffer tape all around the clubs and pull them all in more centrally to sort of hold them in place a bit. Place some bubble wrap or sponge around them and gaffer that on.
- I then wrap and tape cardboard around the outside of the Golf bag especially focussing on any sticky out bits that would rub the golf bag bag, and also over where the Wood heads are in the bag.
- I then place the main golf bag in the Golf flight bag, and then place things like flip flops/sliders/towels/shoes etc all round the remaining room around the clubs sticking out the top to add more protection.

I also massively stack the Golf bag with loads of other holiday stuff if I'm not checking a main suitcase, since you can then get away with a Cabin bag to save money.

Checking the Golf bags last month to Turkey travelling with Sun Express (via TUI) it was £40 per Golf luggage each way. So £160 for two bags both ways. Yeah. I know. Steep. But when you pull out your own clubs on the first tee at Carya golf course under flood lights, it's so worth it. I hired some clubs out in Turkey on a different course and they were surprisingly bad condition. Another guy rented some and played off a 14, yet my son off a 20 beat him as he could not hit the clubs. So yeah. Take your own clubs.

Easyjet was about the same. £35 or £40 each way.

When you check in at the airport you get your Golf club bag checked with a tag and then proceed to the oversized baggage area. My experience was fine. Bit slow collecting at Antalya Turkey and back at Luton via Sun Express. Easy Jet were quick though. At Tenerife my clubs were sitting there before anyones checked baggage came out on the carousels.

If I were going to buy a Golf club travel bag and I knew I would travel more than 2 or 3 times, I'd probably get a hard case. It would also depend how expensive and nice my clubs were. Mine aren't great so I got a cheapish bag. I wouldn't get the £20 ebay jobs. Will likely be awful.

That's great advice thanks. I was looking at a soft ogio bag for around £150. I got a mate who flys from Germany with his clubs and a soft case his seem to arrive safely but I've seen the secret clips of baggage handling.

Played Southerness yesterday and to be brutally honest I didn't enjoy it - horizontal rain and winds probably 40-50mph at times did not make for an enjoyable day. When you middle a 5i (normally a 195-200 club) and it goes less than 150yds into the wind it isn't really golf any more - I only had 28 points but was only 3rd out of the guys with the top score being 30, although one of the ladies somehow managed 36 points

Today was totally different playing Dumfries and County with a couple brief drizzle spells and a lot less wind. Greens were running true and a decent pace and I finished with 36 points - waiting to see how that stacks up later after we have some food, but I enjoyed the round today

Powfoot tomorrow on the way back home

As predicted, got out last night in between the rain showers, shot an 88

yeah as above - I shove loads of stuff into my golf bag "case" - clothes/shoes/jumpers etc - usually wrap them round the clubs to help coushin any blows

I did take head off driver and 3 wood also just to have less potential wreckage....

I suppose I should write about my time out in Turkey!
Well as some of you will know, Portugal is associated with great golf courses, but also so is the Belek region of Turkey. This is a hotspot for a load of great courses. Sixteen in fact all in close proximity and not far from Antalya airport and many of the AI resorts people go out to Turkey for. If you can afford to, you can stay in the many resorts which are part of the Golf courses themselves.

Anyway we played Lykia Links Course during the day time. It was about 2pm when we teed off and therefore about 40 degrees. No other people were apparently mad enough to play in that heat and August is considered very much the low season. We consequently had the entire course to ourselves, apart from one other 2 ball we saw going round further ahead. Nobody behind or in front. I played with my sons. They loved it. A lovely course. The Buggys were incredibly only 5 euros each (50 euros+ everywhere else), and the back sections had cool boxes packed with ice and bottled water. A truly beautiful course. A bit dry in places from the harsh heat but generally very good. Highlight was my son driving the green smashing his 3 wood off the fairway straight onto the green on an early par5 and it hitting the pin and bouncing out. I've got a pic of him just before he taps in his Eagle!

We rented a car to drive up to Lykia as were staying further down the coast near Side. Driving out there is not for the faint hearted in rush hour but it was fine.

Then we played Carya. The same course used for the Turkish open. It may turn out to be the nicest course I'll ever play. Incredible.
We had a 7pm tee off so the first 5 or 6 holes were in daylight as the sun set. Then by about hole 8/9 it had transitioned to fully dark and the flood lights come on for night golf. It was myself and my 2 sons, and we luckily got paired with a great lad also from the UK! He made my sons feel at ease and we all had a great time, despite one of my sons being very new to Golf. We had the last tee off of the day, so were not rushed there either.

Officially it's minimum handicap of 28 for a lot of the courses out there but they didn't check even at Carya which was super high end and posh. We got a private Taxi back after finishing around midnight. I shot over 100 at both courses, but my son got a 93 at Carya, beating the guy we were paired with who plays off a 14. The boys said it was one of the best things they'd ever done so I'm glad we went to the expense and organisation to get it done whilst out there on holiday.

@jaybee nice write up, I went to Turkey last November for golf as well.

It was a group trip and we stayed at the Sirene Belek hotel with golf on the Pasha and Sultan courses of the Antalya Golf Club. I really enjoyed it, weather in November was ~20c which was pleasant although once the sun set it quickly got chilly :p Courses wise I liked both, the Pasha course was a bit easier and beginner friendly with the Sultan being a bit more of a test, especially with some carrys off the tee with lots of water, we played both twice and first time on Sultan was a scramble (probably for the best :p) but where most of the group did another scramble the next time myself and 1 other wanted to challenge ourselves which was good fun.

Going back there again this year with mostly the same group but staying at the Cullinan hotel/golf setup, from what I've read it's a bit easier than the Sultan at least (and Carya etc are harder again I believe) but looks nice and looking forward to it. I believe they've got 9 holes floodlit there as well and definitely want to try that, left it too late to organise something last time.

My 36 points yesterday turned out to be the winning score for the men, so that was a good end to the day for me

Today was Powfoot and it was a little breezy but nothing like we had on Sunday, so it was more enjoyable

I had a mixed round but feel like I am coming down with a cold after the soaking on Sunday, so finally finished with 29 points today

Overall, I did manage to win the best mens score (best 2 scores from 3 rounds) and with my wife we won the best couples score as well - she shot 36 points today so was very happy with her score

Roll on Saturday when we have the semi final of our mixed pairs greensomes and see if we can beat last year's winners

Out last night for a few holes in the sunshine. 15 holes shorter course (Seafield) - 2 hours 20 minutes.

4 birdies, hit the ball well ahead of my final on Friday

Did have a laugh mind you - 14th is downhill, dog leg left - 250 from yellow tees, par 4. I can't hit a draw to save myself, but messing around and setup to try and hit a high draw....purposely tried to hit it off the toe of my 3w to help the draw. Anyway - great swing - ball up in the air and my mate was already calling "hole in 1"

Beautiful high draw - all over the flag, pitch mark was about 10ft in front of the flag, ball finished about 3ft behind the hole... missed the eagle putt:cry: - easy birdie.

Nice when you can actually call the shot and hit the shot - rare thing in golf!

Not been on this forum for some time, came to look at the golf sim I remember someone posting about and seen this.

I go Turkey a month next week and Carya is one of the courses 6pm tee and looking forward to it. It sounds incredible.

Anyway, has anyone put a full cage/net in there garden and use a launch monitor if so what do you recommend cheap as possible.

Mate has this - he got hold of some old scaffolding poles to build the cage..... Used heavy duty netting you can find online fairly easy.

then the expense comes - Launch Monitor... £250 to £20k. Take your pick....

Rapsodo Mobile Launch Monitor / Garmin R10 etc at the lower end of the market. All budget dependent of course.

Well today was an absolute disaster. First time playing since my society win and it was a shocker.

I have been to the range twice the past week and everything felt good. But today I could't string a decent swing together. Was like I'd forgotten how to play.
Game in with a score of 100
Totally deflated and completely out if ideas on how to fix that today. Maybe my week away will clear the mind ready for when I play next

Lost my final 3&2

Giving away 4 shots.

He started Par / birdie net eagle / par / par - I was 3 down....

Lost 6 to his shot, I three putted 7th to be 5 down after 7

Righted the ship a bit with pars from me on 8/9/10 to win the next 3. Halfed 11, I won 12 to be back to 1 down.

He had a shot up 13 and won it with a 5 net 4.... then hits 3w at the par 3 14th to 6ft to win the hole.

3 down with 4 to play - his last shot on 15th par 5. (ridiculously SI 3!!)

I hit driver, 7 wood to 12ft.... roll in the eagle putt.....:D:D

He then chips from 50 yards, to about 10ft, and rolls in the birdie, NET EAGLE....

Honestly - never in my life did I think an eagle wouldn't win the hole - so we half in eagles...

My dad who was just walking round watching just looked at me and laughed - "nothing you can do against that son" was his only response.

Anyway - I get greedy at the next being 3 down with 3 to play - try and take the shorter line over the burn but put it in the water.... Managed to still make a 3 with second ball... (bogie 5) - and he makes the easy bogie to win the match.

Frustrating but it is what it is. Stupidly as I said before, the Stroke index's are so badly wrong at our place - So on holes SI 2 and SI 3 - he makes easy birdies, both for net eagles. They are both par 5's at around 500 yards.

Good to get to a final (won 6 matches this year to get there) but disappointing to lose in the end. Not my night.... Even got a send off from the Red Arrows (Airshow this weekend in Ayrshire)

Some freakish scores in the last few weeks. Today, guy with a net 60 (11 under nett). Guy's handicap is 10. Impressive stuff!

For me -1 net in the medal today, bit of a mixed bag but some brilliant scrambling. Nice 2 as well on the par 3 10th, 6 iron to 3 inches

Spider ZT has been a game changer for me. My putting has been catastrophic this season until I picked it up, will need to crunch some numbers properly but I can't remember an equipment change that led to such an immediate improvement.
