Currently suffering with coming over the top and fading all my shorts, especially drives. Anyone got any good drills they used to fix this?
I used to do this a lot - the way I fixed it was to start the downswing with the hands before starting turning. You're probably turning the body first and this is causing the club to come over the top. Focus on starting the downswing with the hands and then turning the body later in the swing.

Good simple drill for the range...

Take two balls or two tees

This worked really well for me... Use tee's to start with to save any potential damage incase you hit the balls.

Biggest help for me recently was one of Danny Maud’s videos about right hand grip. Basically hold your right arm out with forearm and palm facing outwards, then just turn your right hand at the wrist to the left and grip the club. Has really helped me keep the club face more closed and has made a massive difference producing straight shots!

Cheers, will check that out.

This is literally what I think I do yes! I don't know why I do it, but I think I turn too soon.

Golfs a weird game. Stood on the 13th tee box on Saturday 1 over par on the "round of my life" and all of a sudden I realised that and really tightened up. Ended up losing 7 shots on the next 6 holes which is fun! I was chatting to a friend who plays off one and he said the next step to get to low figures is purely mental and he isn't wrong. I suppose I need to change my mind on trying to play low and not avoiding big scores.

Yeh this is also another great drill, the dropping of the arms before turning, I think I've done this coupled with the right hand grip thing I mentioned earlier, which have both helped.

I'm getting very good at this now with my irons, although with my 5 wood, especially off the tee I think my hands are getting too far ahead and I'm hitting the ground before the ball at times leading to high shots, loss of distance and pushing, just need more practice.

Chris Ryan and Danny Maude will cover this in really good detail @jaybee on youtube. Both make excellent videos, I personally prefer Chris Ryan's videos but there isn't much in either of them apart from outstandingly excellent content.

100%

Fundementally my swing has only changed a small bit over the years.... But my mental game is what's brought me down from 11/12 to 5/6 handicap over last 3 or 4 years.

Last week - cruising along +1 through 7 holes - birdied 8 to be level.... Triple bogied 9 out of nowhere.....

Years back - I would be gone at this point - mentally broken, angry, annoyed etc - I walked from 9th green to 10th tee.... 100 yards maybe... In that time, the score on the 9th is gone, new 9 holes, start again, one shot at a time....

Nice back 9 - +3 I think for next 9 holes. Shot 77 with a triple on my card.

I've learned very very well to improve on my mental game, enjoy the pressure of the game, tough shots etc.

Great book - highly recommended to read.

Be a Player: A Breakthrough Approach to Playing Better ON the Golf Course

Simple stuff - just very very good to work on the mental game as much as the physical side as well.

Can echo that book recommendation, I read it after you recommended it a couple of years back and it's really good. Like you said moving on from those bad shots/holes I like the concept of the 'boxes' it uses.

Also read "Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect" by Bob Rotella, he's done a bunch of other stuff too but another really good book imo.

Not quite the same but also been feeling a bit like my mental game needs some work. It's almost like I'm not really focussing/'trying' properly most of the time if that makes sense? Even in roll-ups and 'minor comps' I'm just not at 100% it feels, whilst things like the NCG Top 100 Tour on a new course with new people I was focussed that bit more and played that bit better because of it. Same with the Buthlay Cup at the weekend, it meant something more. I'd imagine it'll also be the case on Sunday when I play in the individual open at my local. But tonight when I'm doing a fun round, nope :p

In other news I did a thing...

I know, needed to scratch that itch :p The picture was actually from last night, played ok, some mishits and yeah they're less forgiving than the old Dynapowers but a poor strike is still a poor strike. The ball flight does seem much more 'functional' even on extremely firm greens. But also need to play a bunch more, and get a gapping done, before I can really decide whether I've been a complete idiot or not

Well, back from my fitting today, and… no new clubs. Even me! lol!

The thing that took me my surprise was the ball. The fitter, great guy, said my numbers were all great, and as I build my swing again the power will come..

I was educated a lot about the ball, and that got me thinking.. as they use the TaylorMade your response and they felt so, so good and gave me ideal numbers.

My problem though is I cannot use my Rapsodo as they require the RPT balls..so I will be selling it, as much as I don’t want too, my net really does need to be accurate to put the best ball for me to carry that to the course.

So I have a FlightScope Mevo+. If you guys are interested I got it from HotGolf, they gave me a cracking discount and very very easy to chat to!

Check out the Me & My Golf guys. They have got a number of videos recently talking about their 5 steps to help cure a fade/slice and each one is targeted at specific areas

I rarely take much from online videos as you could be trying to fix the wrong thing with your swing, but it could be a start for you?

Played in a mid week medal today. Nothing to write home about (+20) gross but did at least pick up a birdie to take me up to 23 for the year.

Poor start (+5 gross) on the first two holes killed me. I was actually striking it nicely just lacking for direction. Should have birdied the 3rd after a worldy of an approach, 5i into wind to 5ft, but pulled the putt. Then put my tee shot on the next into the drink before paring the 600y 5th

Back nine generally better but putting just wasn't there today. Club champs at the weekend, two rounds stroke play over Sat/Sun, so hoping my 'A' game shows up.

Splashed some cash and bought a new driver and 7 wood. Ping G440 max and QI35 7 wood, both at a fitting. Swing path needs to be cured to optimise the driver for sure need to get more into out but the 7 wood is a missile launcher holy ****. Launch is silly and it’s going 185/190 carry which is what I was looking for as the 5 iron is just far too inconsistent for me.

I'm looking out for a 7 wood as well, prefer the larger profile of a wood compared to a hybrid. Ideally looking for a second hand version of the same model as my 5 wood as I know I can hit that. Trying to find them in the UK is almost impossible, lots available in Japan but at a high cost and with what appears to be a non-standard shaft (at least compared to the UK market).

They do say the 7 wood is the ultimate cheat club.

How do you guys swing?

I went to the range today and using my natural swing, just grip weight and smoother action and I was killing it.

But I know I don’t have a “textbook” swing, but if it works for me does it matter?

Anyone else in the same boat?

If it works? No, do what you like. Go full furyk if it works!

I'd have thought having a solid foundation would limit the amount that could go wrong though. I've started taking lessons (high handicapper here) , and having a particular swing now gives me some confidence on a day to day basis.

Before I would do what you did, but a good day was just that, a day. Now I have some consistency in swing, and so more confidence in what I'm trying to do.

Yeah, that’s true. I have had lessons and my pro says overall my swing is promising, my main issue is I take away from the inside a little bit in the backswing.

Yeah, I feel more comfortable when trying not to “amend” my swing and hitting what feels good.

I play golf every week with people who have far from standard swings and they are considerably better than I am. Like @Bill Turnip says, Jim Furyk is a classic example of you don't need a 'perfect' swing to be a highly successful tour pro. It's the ability to do it continually that matters.

Lessons should just be chipping away at tweaking things one step at a time and having a good all round game, no point hitting it 280 if you can't play on or around the green.

Last week my game off the tee was terrible but my short game was good so I made a lot of up and downs. This week I only had a couple of up and downs but my tee shots were better, end result, same score this week as last week.

Golf is hard.

Exactly this. I have the opposite problem, I'm relatively happy around the greens, but my driving is either great, or a penalty magnet. (Edit: Relative to my skill level!) Went out yesterday after a lesson purely looking at strike point, and it was the best ive ever played all of a sudden.

Was on course to break 100 for the first time, but only had time to do 11 which was sad. When I go out tomorrow, I can see the zeitgeist vanishing again, but we will see.

Golf is hard.

Wasn't to be this weekend. Rounds of 89 + 90 saw me finish +1 nett on the hadicap standings of the club champs. Leader won with -6 nett.

Didn't play too badly overall. My only mental error came today at the 16th when for some reason I tried to play from a horrible lie when a drop would have seen me little worse off than a good outcome from the shot I tried to play, which only buried the ball deeper leading me to take a drop anyway. Oh well, that's golf. Yesterdays round was going well, +12 gross with a chance to tie my PB, until a mini blow up on 17 and 18. Tee shot OB on the former, recovered to make a double, followed by a triple on the last. Today a good front nine, two shots better than yesterday, but couldn't get anything going on the back nine compounded by the error on the 16th.

Winning score was 153 with rounds of 76 + 77, four shots clear of second place.

Edit: Have a 14.4 differential dropping off overnight but the weekends rounds have at least ensured I'll keep my index below 18.

Edit 2: Nett results have just been published. Came 4th on countback in a three way tie. If I hadn't of gone for it on the last (tried to go over the corner of the dog leg with a 7w and just didn't quite catch it) there's every chance I would have made 5 not 6, taken 2nd place and picked up some cash!
