Golf Thread

I don't know why. Maybe I'm just a huge grump but winning sportsmen aka Scheffler picking up their kids and carting them around after winning, really annoys me.

It started about 10 years ago in Football. Ruins the atmosphere for me, watching my favourite sports turn into a cresh.

bah humbug :D:D

I think it's great being able to share it with the family etc - no issues from me - good content etc.

Totally dominant performance - his distance control is just insane - never long/ never short - literally pin high 15/20ft every time

Bonkers

Sure was a clinic. Where others seem to miss the greens and miss putts he was hitting the middle almost every time.

I thought at first that if he wins the US Open next year that he would best Tigers record of 4 years for the GrandSlam, but technically he won the Masters twice in 22/24 so it kinda started his Major run in 22

Lost my 1/4 final matchplay 1 down, AS going down the last which was quite good as I was 3 down after 9. The guy I was playing against is super consistent with a really decent all round game so I knew it was going to be tough as my approach game isn't great at the moment.

Was a bit of a sore one as after being 3 down I won 5 in a row so was 2 up with 3 to play - I then forgot how to play golf on 16 and 17 to take it back to AS, we were both on the green on 18 in 3 - he had a 6 foot putt and I had an 8 foot putt. I missed mine, he made his. The best player on the day won without a doubt and I was glad to take it down to what turned out to be a single putt on the last.

As my knee is still giving me grief I find it difficult to swing my woods so haven't played a single wood in my last 3 rounds but am using my 5 iron off the tee which is actually proving very good as I'm hitting the majority of fairways with it and getting between 180 and 210 depending on the run and slope. This has led to lower scores only being let down with short game so next stage is to get that sorted out with a lesson and I think I could save around 9 shots by increasing my up and downs and reducing my 3 putts so getting back to shooting 80 could be on the cards.

Currently looking to see if I can find a second hand 4 iron to match my set to see how that works for me.

Not a great weekend of golf for me, some good but lots meh.

Friday - Rollup comp, started off terribly with a poor 1st and then on the 2nd made what I'm categorising as a mental error on my approach, picked PW but didn't hit it great and pulled it so it ended OB, second was great but if I'd picked 9 I may have made it past the OB on the first strike and been ok so yeah. But then I had a run of 5 pars and 2 bogeys to finish it off aint bad.
Saturday - Went out for a quick 9 after the club's scratch open, in hindsight I kinda wish I'd entered even though I have zero chance of winning, more on that below. As it was it was just scruffy and meh.
Sunday - Who knows what happened here, ball striking was utterly awful and no area of the game was free from the problems, had a 4 putt, duffed several chips, just terrible. Kinda pulled it together with par-bogey-par on the last 3, especially the par on the last as that's the SI 1 hole and is decently challenging especially into the wind like it was Sunday. But yeah, need to figure stuff out.

About the scratch open, and maybe also Sunday, I've mentioned it before but it just seems my mental game is 'ok' on the surface (not letting bad shots get to me, resetting each hole etc) but I feel like maybe I need to alter my expectations. Playing with a guy on Saturday and he said he expects to par holes these days and I kinda realised I don't, I'm capable of par'ing every hole at the course, even birdie, but I don't expect the par. It feels like my expectations are still that of a ~25-30+ handicapper that's happy with a bogey and maybe that leads to playing too safe, just not in the right space.

Dunno if that makes sense...

He is (or will be) definitely one of the all time greats, such a masterclass to watch

Could be better than Tiger was. Fine margins at that level of ability but I think Scottie could become the GOAT.

Saw some interesting comparisons/metrics recently on that topic. Obviously Scottie is the best there is right now, and the field has improved so there's an argument there but the numbers are kinda crazy, like 82 vs 16 PGA Tour wins, 683 vs 146 weeks as world number one...

I don't doubt that Scottie could match/break those records given time but actually I wonder if he will, especially given his comments at The Open, basically will he bother playing for long enough to beat them? Obviously there's some drive there as he could easily retire and live comfortably but still competes and wins but what is that motivation and how long will it last?

I believe someone said the Sunday at US Open next year is Scotties 30th birthday

Just keep running into guys that play out of their skin against me!!

Team match tonight - away quarter final - I'm getting 2 shots. he's 4 handicap , I'm 6.

He birdies the 1st.... I win the second... then I loose 3rd, then win 4th with a lovely chip in birdie, but it's the only hole on the front nine I get a shot and don't need it!!

He's a solid player, no standout parts of his game, but just seems to be never in trouble.

He ends up holing a 50ft birdie putt on 14th to close me out 5&4.... I was 20ft away in 2 but didn't hole it for the half.

He's level par thru 14 holes. 2 birdies, 2 bogies, 10 pars.

I'm +6 thru 14 on a course I've never played. Played fine just pumped....:rotfl:

Didn't play bad but just smashed again... Think that's probably the 5th time this year I've played "ok" and been battered.....

5 times? That's harsh...

I went for a range session on Tuesday, was planning a nice structured practice but a mate from the club was there so we ended up just chatting and hitting balls a few at a time, good fun but maybe not what I intended :p

Then yesterday afternoon I went out, entered the roll-up even though the div 1 leader had 20 points already, and kinda as per my last post decided to try to take a different approach, I basically went full risk/try to par or better the holes. Didn't exactly workout but it was kinda nice to force a different mindset and ended up hitting some really good shots and putting together an 'ok' score. +9 over 9 holes doesn't sound amazing, and well it isn't, 2 doubles and a triple made most of the damage though, putting was actually exceptional with 10 putts, 1 pickup so that's 2x 2 putts and 6x 1 putts!

First double was the first hole, took driver, it's not driver :p Even now/being aggressive I think 5w is the answer, I had dropped to a 7 or even 8 iron to lay back but that means I need a good 5w and around a 7 iron to get to the green in reg. 5w-5w would leave ~PW/GW at a guess if done well. Brings in more danger but yeah.

Triple was on the 4th, I feel the hardest hole and one where actually I dropped into safe mode on the tee but executed badly then went aggressive and went OB before picking up a couple of shots later.

The other double was the 6th, used a 5 iron off the tee but it just got over a ditch and didn't leave me a stance, tried the hero shot but went OB so drop and take the sensible shot, good chip and 1-putt for the double. Note to self either take more or less club, and don't try the hero shot with no stance :p

Overall though I was striking the ball well, 3 top notch chips and my putting was just stunning for me, but also my mental state seemed better maybe. Gonna be out again this afternoon, probably go aggressive again but maybe with some tweaks and see how it goes...

So some steady golf so far this year.
Had a couple of blow up rounds (92, 92, 93) which had zero impact on my handicap
So stayed at 10.4.
Then hit an 83 at Great Barr followed by an 82 (off the Whites) at Wharton Park. So now dropped to 9.7
Whilst I'm happy being that low it is so tough to maintain. I need to practice more as lately I haven't and have become a little lazy.

Out of the summer knockout after a 2&1 loss today. Gift wrapped a couple of holes early on after we both made a mess of the first, shared with triples. Dragged myself back into it, despite my opponent getting the rub of the green and a couple of shots.

A/S heading to the 15th. I find the front of the green but a good club short to a back flag, three putt range. Opponent misses right but finds the gap between the bunkers. Makes a great up and down holing out from 12ft while I fail to get down in two. 16th we're both just left of the green, I have to take relief from a sprinkler head. Play an ok chip as does opponent. He holes a tricky little put while I miss, 2 DN. 17th I'm on in two close to pin high. Opponent has duffed his second and is 60y short, gets up and down holing another lengthy put to leave me stranded.

I notionally played a couple shots off my handicap, had I played to it every chance we would have been back down the first. Ah well, onto tomorrow - medal comp. Must be due a good round soon....

....and that good round wasn't today :( Only consolation was a short four hole stretch on the back nine which I played in two under. Both birdies set up by beautiful wedges hit to inside 4ft and 2ft respectively :) Run came to an end when I hit my tee shot on seventeen into the water.

Think that's my birdie count upto 25 for the year.

A disappointing 82 today in the last club major of the year before club champs

A couple bad shots and a bad bounce that resulted in a penalty drop was frustrating and will see my index creep up to probably 6.5 tomorrow when MyEG updates overnight

@booyaka I feel your pain with team results as I have had to step up to our scratch section this year and it has been more losses than scoring points

This week was frustrating as I was playing someone with an index of 0.2, so effectively he had a 6 shot advantage before we even started. First 8 holes we both had nothing but pars, and then I hit a bad tee shot on 9 that resulted in the start of a bogey run of 4 in a row. It was then topped off by my tee shot on 13 clipped a tree and went OOB to leave me dormie and I couldn't win the next hole and lost my match

12 Holes saturday - scored 9 for handicap, 2 over so ended up with a 0.1 cut after a 0.3 last week cut.

Sunday was our big Open competition - Belleisle Open - I sponsor a hole so get a 3 ball as part of that.

Nothing special +4 at the turn but then tripled 12th, doubled 13th and that was that. Good finish with another birdie on 15th for my 41st of the year (chasing 50)

Putting really well still - always been the best part of my game but rest feels very "off" at the moment - I'm hanging onto scores as my putting digs me out but 5.7 handicap is lowest ever, but very very hard to play off that at the moment.

Just don't have the time to practice which is needed trying to play off this handicap every week.

I went back up to 6.5 after another low round dropped off yesterday and I didn't play well enough to bring it back down - shot nett 76 (+4)

Tonight was the semi final of our pairs knockout and after yesterday I wasn't feeling too confident, especially considering the shots being given

As the low handicap I was off scratch, my partner got 11, then our opponents got 3 and 23

First hole and I make a birdie but lose to a nett eagle by the high handicap and it was just a struggle all night to keep up with him and the luck he had

Case in point - 6th hole he pulls his tee shot left into trees that are OB, yet somehow his ball bounces back out into the middle of the fairway and he makes a nett birdie to win the hole

I shot level par gross (6 under my handicap) yet we got beat 2&1 in the end. It was frustrating to play so well myself with 4 birdies, and my partner made a few nett birdies to save holes as well and was about 4 under his handicap as well, but still get beat by the high handicap effectively, as the low handicap only won 4 holes all night

I got down to 5.0 last year but injury and subsequent swing changes to ensure longevity have seen me go back up to 6.5 this year

It is definitely tough to play at that level consistently without practice, but I feel like my game has the potential for low scores as shown by tonight - I just need to tighten up my tee game and I certainly feel like I can beat my previous best low round of +2 when I pull it all together

League match last night at a course I am not a fan of, but I finally managed to get a win

2 iron was the club of the night off a lot of tees to try and keep the ball in play or out of serious trouble with all of the sloped fairways that would have anyone hitting 2-3 FIR all round

My 3w was terrible, topped it off 3 out of the 4 tees where I hit it, including losing a ball with one shot

Driver only got hit twice, but ironically found the fairway both times! The second driver tee shot was after losing my ball with 3w on a par 5, so I was trying to make up for it and promptly stuck it 305yds down the middle of the fairway - I still lost the hole as my opponent did what he needed to do

Got one league match left next week, but also got a mixed pairs semi final with my wife at the weekend so will see how that goes
