Golf Thread

Played Carus Green yesterday and although it was good to get out with some other golfers the quality golf wasnt great. None of us were remotely near handicap, the fairways were quite boggy and the greens really fast. Fast greens were causing me problems as i play a links course where i have to give the puts some to get them going but on these greens little taps were sending them off quick.
Driver was brilliant for me for most of the holes apart from a few let down ones.
3/5 wood well they're candidates for the bin, likely look to trade them in.
Iron play i just struggled to get decent contact so wasn't getting distance / height expected
Wedges were either really good or dinked a yard or two in front.
I really do have a weak point in my game though in distance, my 7 iron carries 125-130 yards, my 5 around around 145-150 yards (i don't have a 6) and my 4 iron i don't have the swing speed to get it up in the air. At carus the last whole is a little pond just before the green at around 165 yards and i have nothing that gets me there, means i have to go quite far right and then chip in or go short and chip over the water. driver carries 180-190 yards so quite the gap.

Went out this morning to my local course took my 4 or 5 holes to fix my irons, just taking a lot of time on the back swing to make sure i'm extending out and shallowing the swing properly.
Playing another links course either next friday or the friday after which will be nice, another old course https://furnessgolfclub.co.uk/

Played this morning but we had an hour frost delay to begin with. Once we got out the weather did warm up quite a bit and I was regretting having the base layer on

Shot a disappointing 83(+11) with 2 lost balls, but my swing was not there today. Driver had a lot of pull, draws and pull draws which is not my normal shot shape and the number of iron shots I chunked was just ridiculous

Can't wait until things dry up properly and I can sort my ball striking out

Amazing day up here today albeit winter greens due to frost in the morning. 13 holes played, 0 GIR today, 2 fairways hit. 6 pars and a birdie. Chipped in once and lipped out twice from off the green

Played really well the other day, shot 10o and should have been lower. I went to practice today and lost 5 balls hooked into trees and couldn't hit a ball straight. No freaking idea what the hell I was doing any different. Makes no sense.

And just like that shot 13over today. Yesterday was just a weird day. I was tired and had done loads of DIY.. Maybe I need to do some Yoga before a round.

Got out Saturday and Sunday. Had a good start to the round on Saturday (medal) before inexplicably shanking two in row on the 7th to come away with a double before hoicking one OB off the tee on eight for a triple. I was still on for a decent score when on the short par 3 15th I went bunker hopping. That killed my chances and I came away with a nett 75 (+3). Back was really aching when I got back home. Sundays pairs event and neither of us produced our best, couldn't hit a fairway wood to save my life. We came away with a disappointing 36pts for a better ball stableford. Winning score was 42. On the plus side my back was much better when I got back home so maybe I'm turning a corner. Got a sports therapist appointment this week so hopefully then can find out what's been going on. I'm sure a bit of deep tissue massage won't hurt either.

My home course might be closing at the end of the month, but we got an email this morning to say that someone has vandalised both the 2nd and 7th greens

One of the group sent a couple pics in our WhatsApp chat that looks like it has been an electric bike that has done it

We are supposed to be playing in a final mixed competition at the weekend so will see how it looks

Had a bit of a meh weekend of golf, on the plus side I had a weekend of golf, and it was mostly dry so there's there :p

Post-lesson last week I feel like I'm just leaving the club face waaaay open at least half the time, when I get it closed/closer to closed I get some frankly great strikes but far too many leaking off to the right. Today I even managed to throw a couple of pulls into there as well, just for funs, who doesn't love a 2 way miss...

Today's golf was nice though, at Manor House in Castle Combe which is a lovely course, played it 3 times now and think it's great. Downside is it has 4 massive hills to climb, all 3 times I've played it it's been 'cart path only' and the second time we decided to walk. It's a killer, possibly literally :p my heart rate going up the climb from 2nd green to 3rd tee peaked at 192bpm  (I do have a relatively high peak it seems, I was fine, even par'd the 3rd just after that) So yeah, today we took a buggy, way easier :p But does mean the whole guesstimating what club to take, taking 2-3 clubs over and finding out you got it wrong and have to make something work.

Had a range session tonight to see how my back is coping and feel okay but not totally pain free yet

Feel like I am getting there with my driver swing - hit a couple snap hooks but generally it was pretty straight or a slight draw and a lot more predictable than I saw at the weekend on the course

Got the mixed at my home club this weekend, then playing at Pannal next week and a couple rounds at Celtic Manor the week after to look forward to

Been out the last couple of evenings after work - 9ish holes, but mainly lots of practice of different shots, getting a lot more value from on-course practice rather than range time. Getting much cleaner contact, worked out that I shouldn't be really trying to hit a draw when using anything shorter than a 7 iron - just can't control it as well.

Was out at Cumberwell Park yesterday, first shorts day of the year \o/ Forgot to put sunscreen on though and being a ginger you'd thought I would've learnt by now but nooooooo, mild sunburn for the idiot :p

Ok round though, generally hitting it ok but still a few too many wayward ones (can't really complain as not done any practice so why would it change) and really struggled with putting, they had hollow tined and top dressed the greens so they were super slow and a bit bobbly and I just struggled. Although oddly it was often the case that my first putt was way too short leaving myself a tricky 6-8 footer that I then sank for 2 putts more often than not, but still several 3 putts and no 1-putts to even them out so a poor days putting. Oddly had a chance to win going up the last hole although I didn't know it, winner only got 32 points and I ended with 31 I think but I just fell apart on that hole, think I didn't drink/eat enough and with the sun that was me just done at that point. Didn't really think I'd played well enough to be in with a shout so wasn't really thinking about that otherwise maybe I would've kept it together, maybe...

Annoyingly recently my Garmin watch has started showing signs of the screen dying/getting burn-in. It's an Epix Gen 2 so a few years old now (bought in 2022) and the AMOLED screen just seems to be saying it's done too :p Garmin have offered to replace it with a refurbished one for £193 but I'd also lose the watch for a week or so. Tempted to upgrade but the new Fenix line is kinda pricey, not that the Epix was cheap but still, and if I spend ~£900+ on an AMOLED one and it dies again in ~3.5 years I'll be a bit disappointed. Even the S70 golf specific one is ~£520 ish, and AMOLED again.

I joined my local club last month with my sons. I decided life was too short, and despite the eye watering costs living in the Surrey/Hants/Berks area, I just went with it. It's my most local course as well so more likely to play. Try not to think about the £2000+ joining fee and £2000+ annual fees. at least it's still good value for juniors at only a few hundred a year.

Since handing my clubs down to one of my boys, I've ended up with a bit of a mix mash of clubs now. I am working on building up a second hand bag more to my liking but for now I'm just trying to get out there and record a few rounds to get my first official handicap.
I was in Costco the other day and since I don't own any wedges and was having to use pitching wedge exclusively for the last few weeks, I decided to just roll with the Costco Kirkland wedges at only £150 for all 3. So I grabbed a set. They seem...wedge like. They're fine really. I'm just awful. :)

Went out today and hit a 102. Stop laughing at the back! ;)
Main issues: chunking my wedges 2 feet, putting and hitting my long irons. So mostly everything then.

Highlights:
- 7 iron draw round trees onto green.
- Driver draw on dog leg left causing me to get way down there and make par on the hardest hole on the course.
- parring 3 holes

My membership renewal came through the other day, thankfully not quite as expensive as yours but ~£1800 over the year (I'm in Sussex). Not a private members club though which I presume yours must be given the joining fee!

Visitors are allowed but it's about a ton a round as I recall.

Been pouring down all week - If I'm playing tomorrow it will be a bog. Supposed to be first comp of the year off the front tees back on the main course (belleisle)

Going to see if I can get to the range later and try a few balls to see how back is holding up. Feels better but still unknown.... Rested it all week, no gym etc.

Our new course was closed today, but old one was open

Think the rain yesterday missed us more than where our new course is, but hoping our course isn't too soft tomorrow when we play our final mixed comp
