Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Busy chatting to HP on live chat now, basically purchased my 02.08.12 received 06.08.12 and according to HP's records warranty stopped 20.07.13........

That's based off the serial number of course but what happens if say the retailer sits on stock for a while, you may only end up with 6 months warranty with hp for example.

Don't know what version of Microserver you have Brad but you might luck out and get a N54L motherboard as a replacement motherboard, My N36L motherboard went bad and ended up with a N40L as replacement a year or so ago, ok a bit more power but nice upgrade.

Fingers crossed but he did state 1.5ghz motherboard in chat so that would still be N40L but you never know

Drive bender it is, $17.95 or $19.95 for a second key

ive been using it for a good few weeks now and am impressed with it.

i tried them both for a week each before deciding.

adding pools, removing pools, removing drives etc.

drivebender was much easier to use and i had less issues during testing.

i now have a large 5tb pool hosting media/backups etc. (important stuff then backed to crashplan)

working lovely.

I've got a HP P410 for my microserver but am having problems with it being detected at boot it was running firmware 3.66 but i've now updated it to version 6 so i can use 3TB drives I had to do the update in my pc as the microserver would always reboot or not detect the P410 when trying to update.

anybody have any similar problems or tips for me

thanks.

Been looking at getting the N54L with the cashback offer but i can't find anywhere that is doing it so i was wondering if anyone knew if there was a place that still has the cashback deal?

The cashback offer was from HP, not the retailer, and they aren't offering it at the moment. With the Gen8 coming out there's a fair chance you've missed the boat.

I'm hoping they surprise us with another cash back deal in a few days for August as I also missed out :( Also had no luck finding someone willing to part with one for anything less than £170!

I had this issue. They n40ls we're going on ebay for silly money so I build a cheap low powered server using a b grade board, Sempron 190 x2 and 4gb of crucial value ram.

I've since upgraded to 8gb off the mm which actually cost me nothing by the time I bought 16gb and sold the spare two sticks and my old 4gb stick.

The only thing left to do is buy a Dell Sas 6/ir to allow me to use more than 6 drives.

Idles at around 60w

Quick update people may find useful:

Just received my cash back cheque - my claim was approved on the 11th June and I received the cheque today

Also, been monitoring the power draw (with the 250GB drive and two 2TB WD Reds) - sits around 43W idle (disks not spun down - need to sort that yet) and around 62W at full tilt transcoding videos using handbrake. When switched off, power draw is 0.7W.

Certainly can't complain with HP's service, last night when I was chatting to them they told me my warranty had expired based on the s/n once i'd sent them proof of purchase they honoured the warranty, got an email earlier saying the new motherboard had been shipped so it should be with me in a day or two, I guess i'm lucky it broke when it did, tbh tho im now thinking do I even need it, I might just whip the hdd's out and stick them in my pc as they are purely for storage, trying to teach the wife how to store to the server is a waste of time, my son is only 4 so he has no need so I'm the only one that accesses it, once the board comes might aswell just stick it on the bay and hope for luck :)

Could anybody recommend a memory upgrade for the N54L? What's the max amount of ram it'll take?

I assume it depends on what you want to do with it. I have 4GB in mine and haven't seen memory usage go over 2.5GB when doing the simple things I have my server for (file share, plex, NZB, torrents etc).

Board arrived yesterday but was the the same N40L as before, but hey its now working again which is the main thing :)
