Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Can't remember if I have asked this already. The machine comes with 1x2GB of ECC - can I simply add another 1x4GB of ECC/or non ECC RAM in the other slot without any problems? Do people recommend a LP GPU? Seen quite a few people mention the 6450. I hear XBMC prefers GPU rendering.

I have added an 8GB Non-EEC stick to the exisitng 2GB ECC.

Running Server 2012 with 2 VM's. No issues at all.

Looks like HP currently have a cashback offer for the new Gen8 Microserver.

HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 and PS1810-8G Switch Cash Back

Claim £109.00 cash back when purchasing the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 (724145-425 or 712317-421) with the PS1810-8G switch (J9833A) – making the switch absolutely free!*

It's not the best of offers and is only valid if purchased in August but I have a feeling that this is the best we're going to get....

The new G8 microservers are actually cheaper than I thought they'd be which is tempting!

Any idea if the switch is any good and worth a purchase considering it's free? As far as I know it's an 8-port gigabit, managed switch

They are just epic for <£100. I've been looking for a N54L but they are all going for silly money now the cashback has ended for them. I'm wondering whether to just say screw it and go for a G8 knowing it will be quite a bit more powerful than the N54L and maybe sell up my N40L to downsize a bit.

getting essentially a free managed switch is never a bad thing too. I guess the question is, where can you buy a Gen8 G1610T from for £319?

Everywhere. That's the ex-VAT price :)

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and do the same. It'll be good to finally be able use my Microserver to convert video files etc.

There doesn't appear to be that many resellers though...

Thats my thoughts. Being able to use Plex to transcode VC-1 content would be nice without it buffering every 10 seconds.

I've not seen many resellers for them either at the minute. I can only assume more will appear towards the end of the month. You can claim the cashback right to the end of September as long as you've been invoiced for the products by the end of August.

Just in case anyone is interested I decided to give the 7750 a go in the end. I went for the Sapphire Low Profile model and it fits in fine. I've not given it a massive workout so far but it plays World Of Warcraft acceptably at 1080p on low/medium settings and I haven't had any stability or temperature issues.

Yeah I was pleasently suprised at the performance of the 7750, obviously a bit cpu limited in the microserver but a decent htpc card in general.

On a side note when fitting it I made a couple of handy discoveries that may be obvious to eveyone else but that I had completely missed up until now. Firstly that the front door can be very simply removed by just lifting it off the hinges and that attached to the inside of the front door are a load of screws for both hard drives and optical drives. Wish I'd noticed them before as when I fitted my drives I didn't have any hdd screws to hand and had to wait a couple of days until I could scrounge some of a friend at work

Should I chase up my £100 cash back? I ordered a N54L on 18-6-13 and sent the form out about a week later and not heard anything so far, not even confirmation.

Definitely. They should have confirmed to the email you supplied within 7 days of receipt of your claim. The original claim I sent at the end of May got lost in the post, but I had it tracked so I knew it had never arrived.

I just emailed them tonight as they sent me a confirmation of my claim on 17th June and the cheque still hasn't arrived.

I just had a response from last night's email. They say they're sending the cheque today.
