Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I'm using the Lights Out add in and I'm trying to get my N54 with WHS 2011 to hibernate overnight but it doesn't seem to work. I have the hibernate option available in the calendar item but it then doesn't hibernate. Is there something in the bios to enable ? I've used the console to toggle the powercfg switch as mentioned elsewhere in this thread - anything else I'm missing ?

I'm using Lights Out on my N54 with WHS2011 and have got to hibernate successfully so it can definitely be done. Looking at the recent event log on the Lights Out dashboard page does it show that the server isn't going into hibernate at all or that it goes in but then very quickly gets woken up again?

I've finally put together my HP MIcroServer N54L with 16GB ram and 4x Western Digital Red 3TB's running in RAID 5 on the HP P410 RAID controller card.

I've installed Windows Home Server 2011 on the original 250gb hard drive.

Right now, I'm using my HP MIcroServer N54L to back up my movies, music, arcade roms, STEAM and so on but what are the other essential programs I need to install.

I keep hearing about Sickbeard, SABnzbd and Couchpotato - What are these and what other good programs should I need to install?

Good question. Will check tonight when I get home

Can you tell me what kind of performance you're getting from that card? I'm looking for a card that supports RAID5 as the software RAID5 on Server 2008 is pretty damn slow on the slow CPU of my N36L.
Ideally I'd like one with an LSI chipset as if the 9265-8i I have in my other box dies it would be nice to just transplant the drives across and recover easily, but I've not managed to find an answer on compatibility, and in the absence of a definite yes or no, a cheaper card like the P410 would do.
Also, has your P410 got a BBU and cache? I've seen a lot floating around without either.

I don't know how to check on the performance of the HP P410 but I could check if you explain to me how to do it.

And yeah, my HP P410 has the battery and 1gb memory cache.

Well, grab 10-20GB of files and copy them to the array would be a good enough benchmark for me :)
My box took a full two days to build a 3x1TB array, and now copying about 700GB to the array is taking about 10hrs. This is not really workable...

Wait... this thread hasn't been updated in over 24 hours -- has the zombie apocalypse begun and someone forgot to tell me?

So I fixed the first problem, which was that Lights out had a backup window scheduled at the same time I wanted it to hibernate. The default backup window seems to be 00:00 to 06:00, so removing that means it does go into hibernate (as shown on the uptime graph).

However, it keeps waking up around 3am, but the log file says 'reason unknown'. I haven't got it set to wake on lab, and I have disabled monitoring everything on the network. Very odd.

Anything to do with windows update? or antivirus / defender package checking for updates?

I have a question:

If I stick with the standard BIOS and install Windows 7 or Server 2008 using the motherboard SATA plug, this will be in IDE mode.

What mode will Windows use when I plug in a drive into one of the four bays? IDE or AHCI?

In the bios you can choose ide or ahci for the standard 4 bays it's only people that want to use the rear or internal sata port that need the mod bios to get the option plus full speeds..

Many thanks for that. Will the Windows installer detect the AHCI capability during installation?

I will be using the internal sata port for the OS and moving the drive to the DVD bay.

I plan to use a USB DVD drive for installation.

Looks like I'll be buying the Gen8 after all. Just flashed the BIOS on my N36L using the BIOS-MOD version and now all I have is a black screen on boot...
