Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Anyone running different size memory modules in their server like a 2GB and a 4GB stick giving 6GB?

I have the stock 2GB module and an 8GB module I picked up from Purple Shirts (As I get my staff discount and as I didnt know if it would work or not returns would be a doddle) and the microserver sees all 10GB.

What OS would you recommend?

Need
- BitTorrent downloads
- file sharing across network (images, files, usual junk)
- file sharing with wd tv (movies, series, etc)

Currently using windows server 2012 but it's a pain in the ass for sharing to wd tv..

I reckon it would do with some modding... the mobo looked similar size to mini itx when I had it out

I looked into this a while ago...I believe the mini itx board is a bit too wide for the tray :(

Thanks for the info guys. I just got to work it out if the power supply will be ok and then
finding away to hook up the front usb with the on-board ones ect.

Well if you were going to have to mess about to fit the mobo anyway could you not just attach it at a very slight diagonal and so allow it to squeeze in? Possibly that might cause it to not fit in other areas but still maybe a possibility

Was thinking of replacing WHS with Server 2012 so am curious as to how its a pain with WDTV as we have a WDTV Live in the lounge.

Wdtv doesn't like to pick up anything thats shared via the media server, working fine last week just randomly stopped now.

Installed serviio seems to be working fine now however.

just upgrading my first drive in my server. am 50% through removing a drive ready to add the new one.

i have 2 x 2tb and 2 x 500gb drives but im switching out the 500gb ones with 1tb ones as i was running low on space.

i use whs11 and drive bender for pool management. seems really easy at the moment to switch the drives.

I run 5.1 without issues. I only have 8GB RAM in each box though so I run 2003 VM's to keep resources down. Since 5.5 vCentre requires 2008 I can't upgrade to 5.5.

Have any of you guys got the Gen 8 G1610T? If so how are you finding it?

I have an N54L that i have not taken out of the box but i can swap it free of charge for a gen 8. One thing i do like about the later model is that it comes with iLO.

Well It seems that ESXi was the correct route for me to go down, got the XPenology running nicely with 2x500gb disks for testing until I migrate my other drives (this weekend if everything goes to plan)

The only down side is the stupidly bright blue HP logo. That needs to be sorted asap.
