Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Well It seems that ESXi was the correct route for me to go down, got the XPenology running nicely with 2x500gb disks for testing until I migrate my other drives (this weekend if everything goes to plan)

The only down side is the stupidly bright blue HP logo. That needs to be sorted asap.

Black electrician tape sorted it for me :)

Hi Guys, got one of these turning up tomorrow :)

What Hypervisor have people got to work on it?

what's HPs endgame here? they are selling for so cheap (after cashback) that I doubt therte's any margin in it for them? A neat way to dispose redundant hardware? A way of getting home servers to homes that would never buy them otherwise, then get users familiar with the HP server brand and get them to upgrade?

P.s. does anyone know if the n36L is upgradable? I remember n36L was sluggish on Windows home server 2011 with vmware running windows 8. (needed vmware because the software I was not 100% safe to user on host OS)

None of the pre Gen8 Microservers have upgradeable processors, they're soldered to the board.

I'm pretty sure HP are just dumping the remaining stock. From a price point-of-view they're actually more expensive now than they've been for most of time they've been available.

Thanks, I figured it would be soldered boards,I suppose just buying a gen8 motherboard is out of the question because it will probably be just as expensive as a whole unit..

There's probably as much margin in as a desktop PC. There's no particularly expensive parts in a Microserver, I think people are just used to small PCs being overpriced (especially the cases) so it seems cheap.

They're still an absolute bargain at 129.99 though!

Loving my two and the new setup. Just installed a 6450 GFXcard and another 2GB of ram in the backup server in the study...Installed XBMC alowing me to get rid of the HTPC in the lounge.

Just installed 16GB of ram in the Media server running server 2012 :D

A 4 bay icybox hotswap cost nearly as much as the server itself :D

I use a sharpie to dim the blue light! Works quite well!

I've also just purchased a N54L with 3 year warranty for £124 after cashback, quite happy with that!

I used folded paper, made an 'n' type fold and used tape to hold it in place.

I have this issue quite a lot, i swear blue lights are the bane of my life, since falling in love with the rich blue LED on the PS2, its spread to pretty much everything to the point that a small room can be lit on computer LED's alone :D

I think most of my hatred stems from the fact that Bloomin everything has blue LEDs in them, CPU coolers, fans, fan controllers, mobos etc. If you dont want blue LED's your left either having to disable them or pick inferior products because the manufacturers plaster their product full of the evil little things! It carries through to things like mobos with blue components (heatsinks, sata ports, ram sockets, PCI-E ports etc).

The HP light could warn passing ships at night, and im in Manchester! ;)

I took the plunge and got one. 4 x 2TB HDs and a 60gb SSD for OS. Its just being used as a basic file server atm and running a plex server for use with a RK8188 android mini pc downstairs. Works quite well and so far very pleased.

just joined the 54L club
flashed the bios with hacked one and put the 250gig drive that came with it into top bay and 4x 3tb into bays, running server 2012 r2 just fine, using it as an addition to my qnap ts410. for streaming tv and movies

Mine has 3 in... 2x Toshiba 5700 rpms plus the 250Gb drive that the N54L comes with...

The noise of the stock fans is louder than the decent drives, but if you replace both fans it's pretty quiet - you can hear the heads parking and a little bit of low level hum but that's about it. Have mine sat about 1 metre behind me at about head height in my office room and barely notice it's on

Both fans? I wasn't aware you could change the PSU one?

Yeah you can... the PSU fan is slightly more involved to change but if you search back through this thread you should be able to find a post that explains how to do it, and a post sometime after that from me which adds a few details after I gave it a go... Definitely recommend it, didn't cost or take very long and makes the world of difference :)
