Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

If it's just a NAS, Gen8.
You won't be bothered by the RAM limitation and you can upgrade the CPU if required.

Thank you. I also have and idea, maybe to get a gen10 and replace my cyrrent desktop(i5,8gb ram). My current pc is mostly used to connect to RDP or sometimes im doing some programing with python. Maybe its posible to setup something like ESXi, to install windows, ubuntu and freeNAS, and connect directly to one of the vm's (not sure if it is possible)?

OK, really noob question here so bear with me. I've got my Gen8 and am looking into setting it up as a simple NAS for file storage using NAS4Free and RAID 1, is it correct that I want to set the bios to AHCI mode and that installing NAS4Free is what will configure and setup the RAID? I can't quite seem to get my head around setting the bios to AHCI or RAID and in which circumstances I would pick each one.

Looking at getting the Gen10 even though I hate AMD but I can't bring myself to buy the Gen8 when it's a) more expensive than the Gen10 and b) it has the Celeron CPU in it. OK yes I could upgrade it but I'm just going to be running it as a media server for Kodi so I think the Gen10 one will be perfectly fine. Just trying to decide on what HDD's to get, currently looking at WD Reds since it's going to be on all the time pretty much. Though I might set it so that it goes to sleep and wakes on lan activity or something.

If anyone decides to upgrade the stock CPU I can confirm that the i5-3470T does indeed work fine in the HPE branded SKUs without additional bios changes needed.

There are reports of it been funny with the HP RAM so I paired it with some Crucial 1600 ECC and all is well.
That's good to know as I have one ready to install at some point. How are the temperatures when it's loaded?

Hi All,

I have a 5 year old N40L which is still going strong in the cupboard, but I am looking to upgrade, looking for advise.

-I want a true Raid 5 solution now, currently use Drivepool to make the drives into one single drive so I can share to my media sources Plex, network drive etc.
- I need at least 4 drives or more if possible.

Should I go with a Gen8/10 solution and upgrade the CPU plus buy raid 5 solution ?
Or should I Guy a Poweredge T20 with a xeon processor and just get it over with is this Raid 5 capable by default of do I need to spend extra)?

What is the potential cost of either excluding my storage drives which I already have?

Many thanks in advance.

Why RAID5, wastes space and doesnt protect your data as well as the folder duplication function in Drivepool, theres no need at home, Drivepool does a much much better job due to the simple fact that it stores your data on an NTFS (or ReFS if you're on the latest beta) which in case of an emergency yu can just put the drive in any machine that can read the FS..
Gen8 plus points, comes with iLo, swappable CPU so as your needs change so can the CPU, tried and tested platform, ESXI support if you wanna go down that route.
Gen10, erm, its newer, top of the range one has better CPU than any of the stock Gen8 options, although the Gen8 can be upgraded much faster than the Gen10.
Only real selling point on the Gen10 is more RAM support as the Gen8 is limited to 16Gb..

RAID is so poor now compared to software level functions. RAID should only really be left to enterprise solutions which has the hardware to make it worthwhile, and then I'd never recommend RAID 5 due to the write penalties with it.

You reckon I should stick with Drivepool and ignore Raid, I think i can live with that, seems I might just get a Gen8 and upgrade the CPU 16GB ram is okay with Me I suppose.

Just been reading that the Gen10 only supports up to 4TB drives (same as the Gen8), is this actually true or will it support 6TB ones?

I got 2x 8tb wd red in my gen10 and this came out of my gen8, also mates have the gen8 with 6’s and 8’s Seagate variety’s so yeah it will support fine.

Awesome thanks! It dawned on me early this morning that I figured it was meaning in regard to the boot drive which for me isn't going to be an issue since I'll run a small SSD for the OS.

Which brings me to my next question...

My desktop is currently our media server which is running W10 Pro and has just a shared network drive which our HTPC connects to via SMB in Kodi, my question then is what would be the best OS to install on my Gen10? Would I be better with a dedicated NAS type software or stick to Windows since I also need to run an off site backup software on it too (currently Backblaze).

Thanks :)

For me personally, Drivepool does a better job than RAID, what you use your system for and what you plan to do in the future your mileage may vary, I held on to my Gen8 for as long as possible having come from a Gen7, waited for the Gen9, nothing, did a custom build simply to give me more than 16Gb RAM, then HP brought out the Gen10, glad I built when I did rather than wait for the Gen10 as its no use to me...
Horses for courses and all that...

Re-purposed my N36L as an Xpenology box with 5x 1TB and a 128gb cache drive.

Such versatile little boxes!

Currently have a gen 8 running xpenology and 3 x 4tb drives. Have been using crash plan to back up files from my pc but they have just announced that they will no longer be providing the service.

So I'm wondering if you do backup your pc to your microserver what do you use.

Also thinking about moving away from xpenology to windows server. Would it be worth it for just plex and backups?

Why dont you use BackBlaze?I think xpenology have native app for it
