Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Currently have a gen 8 running xpenology and 3 x 4tb drives. Have been using crash plan to back up files from my pc but they have just announced that they will no longer be providing the service.

So I'm wondering if you do backup your pc to your microserver what do you use.

Also thinking about moving away from xpenology to windows server. Would it be worth it for just plex and backups?
I use Acronis True Image to back up the system drive and robocopy to mirror the data drive.

Anybody know how to get hold of the updated BIOS for the Gen10? HP's site wants a ton of business info to make an account just to download it but I'm not a business :(

am i reading right that the Gen10 CPU is soldered to the mobo? Sucks if thats right.

cpu and gpu is in a single silicone, as it says in official website - Highly integrated CPU, GPU, multimedia and I/O controller hardware on a single die. But i think you can always upgrade gpu because it has pci slot.

Sucks indeed, yes the top official spec Gen10 is faster than the top official spec Gen8, but the Gen8 you can upgrade beyond the Gen10 CPU wise.
Only reason for the Gen10 IMHO is the RAM increase over the Gen8...

Well, been a few days with the GEN10 and im already back on my GEN8.
the CPU was maxing out both on unraid and windows 10, the cpu is pants, anything I did even at idle it was highly utilised.

The Gen10 is a massive disappointment, I didn't even feel it was a worthy upgrade over my N54L. £190 of Dell R710 was waaay more worth it though :D

Rackmount? Bet that's noisy.

Eh, it's not too bad. Compared to the N54L then yes, it's very noisy as I can't hear that. But the fans sit at 3600rpm and give off a gentle hum, I had it in my dining room for a few weeks and it wasn't an issue. It's now in an outhouse mostly due to the size of the thing. But the CPU power is very much worth it, 2x X5670 CPU's. I've gone from struggling to stream 1080p on Plex to being able to do multiple streams as well as many other things.

Nice electric bill too. I had a T420 dual XEON CPU server and it was fun initially and then I realised quickly that it was way OTT for a home environment.

Mine pulls around 120w at idle, it's acceptable to me really for what it does. It's a great lab to learn on too. The N54L is my pfSense and Pi-hole box now.

I'm not saying a rackmount server is an ideal solution for all, but it's a cheap way for a lot of CPU power.

We have a Dual Xeon e5620 in a pedestal server with 6 HDDs and it only pulls 180watts.
I don't mean to be obtuse here, but if it's only drawing 180W then you're not using it anywhere near its ability and something that can draw far less would be more ideal?

3 VMs running on it, with Plex, and various other dockers.

My Gen10 is up and running now with my RAID setup, just waiting on my AIO coming for my main desktop and I can start transferring data over to it. It's only for storage and streaming via Kodi to the HTPC in the living room so it should be great for what I need it for :) *crosses fingers*

Got my gen8 yesterday, installed xpenology on bare metal. So far so good. Actualy was surprised about server quality, its really good.
