Google Pixel 5

bit of a face unlock novice, isn't all just selfie camera and software, or is there more hardware going on ?

FaceID on iPhones uses dedicated hardware to make a proper 3D image map of your face, is very secure and can't be fooled by a photo. The equivalent on most Androids is more or less what you said and in many cases can be cheated by a photo. Google came up with their own 'proper' version of FaceID but dropped it in a year. Because they are Google.

Ah, I see, makes more sense, seems Google are trying to hit a sweet (ish) spot of price / performance this time round, loosing face unlock has obviously saved more in cost than the deemed benefit. I won't miss face unlock having never had it, others may feel its a cut too far. I would like wireless charging mind.

This is indeed what's putting me right off any new android right now.. Google's needless culling of good things they create. GPM and face id worked really well. And now they are no more.
Does not instill confidence really!

I don't know if it has been mentioned, But on the Pixel 5 page it states, Starting at £499 although not sure if that means the 4a?
When I went on the Pixel 4a page, It showed £349.

Who buys a budget pixel AND wants 5G?

5G is way down the pecking order when speccing a phone.

It quite interests me to be honest. I don't use my phone enough to justify a flagship but I do watch a ton of YouTube and play Stadia on my mobile.

As well as 4G being completely saturated in my town centre, I either get 3mbps or nothing loads at all. So I have to drop down to 3G to even load any websites.

I'm looking forward to the pixel 5. I'm still on my pixel 2xl and it's starting to show it's age now. Looking forward to the event next week. I was close to getting the one plus 8 pro but from what I read the camera still isn't quite as good. That's my main reason for a phone. I don't want an iPhone so I'm hoping this pixel 5 will be what I'm looking for.

I didn't want the pixel 4 - didn't want face unlock or the gimmicks. Sounds like the finger print sensor will be back. Which makes it even more appealing. I don't care about 90hz screen or anything. It's the camera and storage. More ram won't be bad either.

For me;

Screen that has decent uniformity and doesn't suffer from pink splotches
Decent camera
Decent battery life

Not a massive list really, but one that seems hard to achieve.

S10e. Good screen, cameras are ok, battery is a bit meh?

Good point battery life is important.

I'm honestly not precious about the screen or resolution. I don't consume a lot of media on my phone, that said a nice quality screen would be nice of course!

Do we know what lense setup is happening with the 5? I must be one of the few who actually value a telephoto over a wide angle

All the rumours I’ve seen suggests the pixel 5 is leaning towards premium midrange, including a 7xx series SoC - this would instantly drop it from a potential device for me, as it’s easy to notice the slowdown after a year with updates that are more taxing due to newer, “better” features.

The only android at the moment which looks competitive in features is the Xperia 5 II, but I’m not confident about the camera capabilities knowing Sony’s reluctance to implement computational based photography.
