Google Pixel 9 Series (9/9 Pro/9 Pro XL/9 Pro Fold & Pixel Watch 3)

Very tempted to get the fold but on the Google store the dates for delivery for the 512gb porcelain have been constantly changing, couple days ago it was 13th till the 20th and this week the dates have changed to next day delivery.

How reliable are the dates listed on the Google store ? I don't want to place an order and get charged and they suddenly change the delivery date and I end up waiting till end of the month or October

The Fold has had a great review in The Guardian, so I was going to get a look-see today if it's in the usual places for display. Although, it's pricey and I worry about longevity as it'll be replacing a Galaxy Tab 7+ that's been going great guns since 01/05/2021 and I honestly can't see the Fold staying relevant for that long.

I'm pretty impressed with the modem so far, had the 9 Pro Fold for a week now and it's definitely a huge step up from the modem in the 6 series. With the 6 I noticed in congested areas, sometimes it takes a while to drop down to 4G for the internet to stay working. In some cases it just loses 4/5G even if it still sees the network (jumping into aeroplane mode and out fixes it). With the 9 it's much more seamless and stays connected. Going to Hong Kong next month which I noticed more of the 6's modem issues, hopefully the 9 will do better over there too.

Received a fold 9 pro yesterday , having had quite a few foldables over the years I wasn't particularly that impressed initially. As with most pixel devices though it's all about the overall experience, and I'm really warming to it , pleasantly surprised by the camera too.

I picked up the case too but it's adds too much bulk, so I'll be going naked - in the house at least :)

I've been trying to find a decent slim case for my Fold too. The Caseology Parallax case is also rather bulky, I find it actually gets in the way of gestures on the front screen because of how big the lips are. I also picked up a Tudia case with magsafe, it's much more slimmer and easier to use. Only issue is that is 1) it comes with a built in plastic screen protector. I used a heatgun to remove it and it still fits fine. 2) Magnets in the wrong place. The manufacturer got back to me quickly though after Google revealed where the charging coil is, and will send me a replacement at the end of the month. I did try stick with it but I discovered the misplaced magnets was causing some weird static noises while using the phone. Will see if the replacement with the correction position will do the same.

Got to see these in the flesh today. I hadn’t seen a foldable fold in person before. I was quite surprised at how good it looks, I expected the crease to be super noticeable. I still wouldn’t get it until it’s a few years more developed but was certainly interesting. 9 Pro looks and feels pretty good though.

I'm finding issues with the finger print sensor and the official case, can't seem to get a clean contact with it. Minor problems of course.

I had the original Pixel stand lying around and it lines up perfectly well with the Fold, but can't get any of the stand features to work, guessing exclusive to the stand 2.

Gemini is awful, I've been using CoPilot which is much better.

They replaced Google Assistant that could set reminders and now we've got Gemini that can't do something as basic as that.

Yep, Gemini is absolutely rubbish compared to ChatGPT and Claude, it's generally well known as an LLM is lags massively behind the others i.e. GPT4, Claude, Llama3 and is not very accurate. This is Google rushing to catch up.

I've also noticed the integration of their AI features compared to Samsung is awful . For example Samsung have summarisation built into their browser and AI integrated with their apps (if you want to use them) Google is clearly a rush job and needs to do a lot better.

I have both Claude and GPT4 on my phone I used, I then use mid journey for images which is far better .

On another note, I've actually picked up a Pixel 9 pro XL off eBay brand new. Paid £812 for a new sealed 256gb UK version .

I've noticed lots of people struggling to sell and offering deals i.e. 512gb versions sealed for 875-910. At this price for me it works and was never going to pay the retail price.

I have an 8 Pro and s24 Ultra, when I opened and started using I felt underwhelmed and thought I had wasted my money.

After using for a couple of days I think this is close to the perfect phone, ergonomics are perfect for me (s24 Ultra with square edges was starting to annoy me, especially when in then pocket), my biggest frustration with the s24U was the camera especially on moving subjects such as kids or animals and lower light.

Battery life also seems brilliant (I'm guessing this is the new improved modem ) and the ultra sonic sensor in conjunction with face unlock is perfect.

It's a bit boring but for me probably the perfect all round phone, I don't like IOS so will never go with an iPhone .

Haven't noticed any slow down either or CPU related issues but I don't game on phones.

Will probably put the s24U up for sale as Samsung still hasn't delivered the fabled camera update they've promised for months.

For balance the AI features are rubbish though and Samsung who also use the Gemini LLM do a better job of making it useful , Googles approach in Gmail is slow and largely pointless

Will you be buying the Samsung S25 Ultra when out comes out in January?

Decided to hang onto the 24 Ultra by the time you factor in depreciation and eBay fees it's not worth selling , will see if they improve the camera..

As for the s25 Ultra , it would need to be a step up. I'm finally getting bored of changing and happy with the 9 Pro XL. Not sure what else I really need . S24 Ultra was very good apart from when taking action shots of my kids and ergonomics.

As the iPhone release has shown, it's stagnated now and they are trying to push AI to force upgrades.

The only thing the next Pixel could have to improve would be a better processor but personally don't have an issue with the G4 day to day

After all my indecision and faffing about and having received my Galaxy S24....I'm sending it back. I don't like it. It's thicker and smaller than my S20 FE. The search goes on!

That's fair enough.
I have both to the S24 Ultra & the Pixel 8 Pro & never use any of the AI stuff.

Will be getting the S25 Ultra though. I like the rounded of corners that it may have.

Do you feel the 9 pro is a big update/change from the 8 pro?

Wow, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is not exactly robust. I mean you don't expect them to be indestructible but....

Yeah after seeing this I’m really considering cancelling my order. I knew the inner screen wasn’t particularly scratch resistant but hadn’t realised how fragile the chassis is or how prone it is to getting dust and dirt trapped in the mechanism. I just watched a couple of his videos for the recent flip phones and they seem far more robust so might look into those instead.

Ergonomics are better even though 8 pro was great and build quality is definitely a jump up.

Screen is better and battery has improved mainly due to the modem I believe, cameras are the same .

Finger print reaser is better , not that I really had an issue with the optical one

I would class this as a Pixel 8.5, it's improved on the things the 8 pro already got mostly right .

Having watched it again, the relatively nominal pressure needed in the reverse fold test at the 6min mark to break this compared to the Z Fold6 (which locked out and survived ok), coupled with the zero resistance to dust and grit ingress means longevity really does require overly careful handling.

I cancelled my order a while ago for other reasons but glad I did.
