Google Pixel and Pixel XL

Simply that much of the increase from pre-June top of the line smartphones due to Pound weakness (15% v US dollar). The consumer ends up absorbing exchange rates weakness, as global airline prices have shown for example.

Apple have a monopoly for iOS phones. That is why they can charge so much.

Google have much much more competition.

If Google will follow this up every year with premium phones at this price point, then they may develop a following like Galaxy phones, which is at similar price points.

These missed a trick if they wanted to take the apple market on. You either come up with a far superior device or you match the device and undercut.

Sadly Google have done neither

Apple are also able to maintain their prices through the lifecycle. Android phones do not do that because of so much competition.

Well today has been a disappointing day for sure. It could only be more worse if I don't wake up to a "news about your ticket" email from Euromillions.

Google said that this day will go down in the history as one to remember. They were talking in a positive sense but in reality it will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

Epic fail by Google, never have I ever felt so underwhelmed.

Also an EE only exclusive if I'm reading it right? Otherwise have to cough up for the phone straight up from Google directly.

I was all set to buy one of these as soon as it was available for order but a price of £599 for the cheapest model is way too much for me. I know it has really good hardware inside it and that it matches the iPhone and Samsung phones etc but I hardly ever use my phone and the only reason I wanted a Pixel phone was for programming Android apps and targeting the latest version of Android. I can't justify that amount of expense for the uses that I will be using it for. I guess I'll just stick to my Nexus 4 for the time being and pick one of these up second hand or something.

In buying the 32 GB Pixel XL last night, I considered whether to buy the phone here on a visit to the USA. Often it is possible to arbitrage and get a better deal over there.

However, I concluded I should buy it here. Here is my thinking. The £ 719 base price includes VAT at 20%, meaning £ 143. Hence the ex-VAT price is £ 576. The ex-VAT price, converted to US $ at today's exchange rate of £ 1 =$ 1.275 means the UK based dollar price is $ 734. Actually the Pixel XL 32 GB phone in the US is listed at $ 769, but in most US States there is sales tax. And you also have to declare the purchase in arriving back to the UK!

So Google is really not charging the UK buyer any more for the purchase vs the US buyer, in fact appears to be charging less. If you were buying the Pixel XL in NYC where there is an 8.25% sales tax, the US $ price would actually rise from $ 769 to $ 832.

So for once, the UK buyer is really not disadvantaged compared to the US buyer.

By the way, I chose the silver colour, rather than Black. I noticed in the US that the "really Blue" colour is only available when purchasing the Pixel through Verizon. I have not checked EE here but assume that the really Blue would only be available if purchased through them?

You could sneak it back into the country in your pocket. Don't have a guilty look on your face and hope the sniffer spaniels don't latch onto you :D

I was interested in buying one but wasn't very keen on the leaked renders coming out over the last few weeks. Just too expensive as well. Oh well, the search for a phone goes on (not that I really need one  )

@stoosh and mrk

I appreciate the pricing is a real turnoff for you. As mentioned, I have ordered the XL last night.

You might consider some time from now why I think this was such a key moment for Google and why I think they described it in such glowing terms: Artificial Intelligence.

In my way of thinking, AI has completely disrupted Google's thinking about a phone and why it is prepared to challenge its Android partners in a way that the Nexus never did. By going end to end, Google is taking on much more risk---owning the device fully from start to finish as a hardware manufacturer would. I think we will look back and say that where computers can understand what people are saying and respond with the right information at the right time, will be a historic moment equal to the discovery of computers, the World Wide Web and the smartphone.

Google described it yesterday as a moment when they can achieve a personal Google for each person. Home will also be a key device in getting Google Assistant into the mainstream.

The Pixel, seen in this light, is in a class of its own as far as Google is concerned. I appreciate what they are doing and decided to get on board.

The pricing smells of brand consumer strength testing to me. Set at Apple prices and work down from there to compare.

I'll certainly not be pre ordering.
