Google Pixel and Pixel XL

Artworks case arrived today, nice bit of kit!

Shame it isn't a soft rubbery texture like the plain coloured ones but still, does the job and will hopefully prevent any major marks on the phone.

Review up at Anandtech

In the end, the Pixel XL is a decent enough phone, but it is not the ultimate Android phone that people were likely hoping for. It fails to stand out in a crowded market and cannot claim to be the best in any single category; at best it is a jack of all trades. This is a serious problem for a phone that is positioned as and priced like a flagship phone. It also does not help that it’s missing support for microSD cards and wireless charging (it does support the USB Power Delivery specification for 18W fast charging), features that are available on the Galaxy S7 edge. There’s also no environmental protection against water and dust, which both the S7 edge and iPhone 7 Plus include. Even its exclusive software feature, Google Assistant, should be available on future Android phones. In the end, the Pixel XL is a Nexus phone with another name. It still delivers a pure Android experience and timely software and security updates, but is that enough to justify its flagship price?

Surely that wont really be relevant on a security update? I thought that was about when we previously say it updating all the apps? (Did it do that on security updates, I don't actually remember now!)

I believe it applies to all updates - even security updates would clear the cache.

When you say "artworks" did you personalise it with a photo? I ordered and received today the "Live Wallpaper" case from the Play Store which created a permanent photo I took as the basis for the case.

I am really impressed with it.

I was thinking about that Anandtech review -

Some of you may have seen my thread about the survey of why you buy a phone. From that you could argue the Pixel leads the way in fluidity, software updates, camera, internal specs and battery life, which are pretty much all the things people say are the most important. The only one people voted high that it doesn't is perhaps the screen, but that is certainly still very good.

I've had both Pixels (large and small) for a couple of weeks. They're excellent and right now I don't think you can go wrong with either. I know they're expensive and they lack the features of some of their competitors, but as a former S7 Edge owner I'm happy with my choice - I'd rather have a stunningly smooth version of Android and Google's vision as they intended it. The smaller Pixel is particularly good - a small phone that can go toe to toe with the larger devices that we're more used to.

It's released next week no? Mine is supposed to arrive between 15th and 17th next week.

Edit: Just got email it's on the way, no tracking info so far.
