GordyR's Beginners Guide to Bodybuilding

im at 108kg's with about 12%bf or so (i dont really check it. Weight is likely to go up now as im winter eating and training 8-12 reps (apart from the aformentioned BW compounds which im doing as many as poss of to get stronger at).

My big weak point seems to be my back its not developed enough, its hampering all my compound lifts i think.

Crikey I weighed myself this morning at a massive 138lb, and that'll be a fair bit of water as I just started taking creatine the day before.

exactly how are you measuring your BF to a decimal point?

is the number really that important? is the mirror not a better measure?

Uh, not callipers but they have this tool at the gym. Basically I weigh myself then I check my height (6ft 3in 15st) then enter it into the machine, you then hold it up (has two detectors on either side for your hands, metal parts) then you have someone hit the start button. In all honesty I've no idea what it's called. If it helps it's similar to this:

I believe these are heavily influenced by how well the body is hydrated at the time the reading is taken, making them very hit and miss.

Try super hydrating before a workout and taking a reading. Then do a tough workout that will have you sweating loads, maybe even go for a sauna, etc after and then do another reading and see what the results say.

I had it done on a morning when I went in. The readings tend to mess around after a workout. Water levels change it as well I think that's why I tried to get the best possible measurement, even though it's not 100% accurate but it gives me a rough idea. Is there even a simple way to measure body fat accuratly?

Taking photo's every few weeks is a good one, as is an honest friend. Thing with photo's is you need to use the same poses and the same lighting everytime. Lighting especially can make a big difference to how you look.

Not when bulking, arnie clasically (according to the biography "Arnold") used to go into the woods with his training partner lugging 200kg's of weight, a bar, crates of beer, bags of chicken and both their GF's and used to do squats all night while eating whole chickens quaffing beer and having rampant outdoor sex by the fire, sounds like one hell of a bodybuilding diet to me! Apparently it was all to do with the mentality of being animal-man or something, odd guy, legend tho!

additionally, arnie aside, afaik theres no correlation between alcohol consumption and poor muscle growth. In fact since alcohol promotes testosterone and inhibits the stress hormone cortisol, i'd imagine its pretty good for BB'ing. The big downsides are hangovers, which will inhibit training, and large amounts of simple sugars screwing up your cut.
