Got £200 to spend on speakers

The Monolith is an excellent sub. You'd better get some decent full range speakers to pair with it though if you want a balanced sound.

I'd love to go for stereo subs one day when I've got the money and space.

I will be using the Monolith sub and connecting it directly to the computer, it will be used in replacement of the z5500, so the sub on the z5500 will be turned off, sure it wont sound as good as with full range, but its only tempory, i want the sub first, because i know it can work directly with my computer withought an amp, then after sub, amp and speakers will come shortly.

If i ever get some speakers now, it will be quite a while, Creative aint refunding my purchase of the X-fi, there sending me a new X-fi :(.

I aint bothered really, i will have to have patience, doesent matter how long it will take, i WILL have the Monolith sub and bookshelve speakers one day, i can count on that, no doubt about it, it will happen :P, and my z5500s will go on ebay or my old computer, or might just give them to my parents lol

Let us know when your speakers and amp arrive, and give us some feedback, Carl :D

Will do mate. Got the Cambridge A5 amp, just waiting on the 902s! Hes a bit slow in sending them. Z5500 will be here tommorow though!

Just ordered a Logitech G7 carbon mouse too, looks the dogs danglys!

Arghhh, evil... must be horrible having the amp sitting in front of ye, and the cables, but no speakers. Still gives you time to familiarise yourself with the back of the amp, so wiring it up will be no problem :)

that will sound awful. decent amp and front speakers first! its not all about bass you know.

agreed. I had some megaworks 550. changed for a A1 amp and speakers. Got these rear ported mission M71s for £40 delivered and they sound really nice

I tried the cambridge A5 and a more expensive azur amp, didnt like either and stuck with my A1

What will sound awfull?

Yes, i would either buy the front speakers and amp first, or but the front speakers, amp and subwoofer all at once, which i hope to be doing, dont see how front speakers, amp and subwoofer will sound awfull :s

Hehe, similar to my build then, except I have slightly older, and more expensive speakers, similar design it seems though :)

what speakers have u got? the ones in pic are second hand but are in excellent condition. the joys of ebay

Read back to page 1 to see the pictures, I've got Mission 751's on a Cambridge Audio A5, from a X-Fi. :)

I also bought my speakers from ebay. £100, they cost £400 when they came out. Not so bassy, biwired from the A5, but have tremendous clarity and feel of soundstage - feels airy and you can follow sounds with your eyes shut with decent music recordings :)

nice. what do you think of the A5? I bought one and tested it and didnt like it as much as the A1 so took it back the following day. Also tried another and it had a really cool remote feature that moved the wheel around. sort of looked scary! (didnt like that as much as my A1 either though)

I liked the A5 a lot, it was a bit more powerful than the A1, and I noticed, especially compared to the A1 Mk Whatevers, it seemed to be able to go a lot louder without any apparent amp induced distortion. Sounds bang on :)
For stuff where I want a little more bass than no EQ provides, I just have the Bass EQ set full, and flip the direct switch, so most of the time I listen direct, and during movies I turn the direct switch off. Works an absolute treat :)
The way I saw it, and the reviews seemed to see it, by getting the A5, I wasnt paying much more for the amp, than the A1, but I was getting more power, and a higher non-distortion threshold, and considering I had nice mid-to-low end speakers, and pc sound can be bad enough without adding any more bad 'flavours', I decided the extra little I paid, and the overall sound quality it gave me once properly bi-wired (although Im sure single wire would be fine), was worth it.

Each to thier own though, like speakers, all amps and manufacturers have a different flavours. All Cambridges are similar, but they're not the same.

When I tested the A5 I listened to it at 'normal' listening levels for a while then cracked it to about 3/4, it was loud but then I turned my A1 to 1/2 and got the same level of volume, whilst not being distorted. I asked a guy in the shop and he said it was something about the A1 not being protected or something.

Im not too bothered about distortion at full volume anyway because im right next to my speakers and my ears will bleed before i hear distorted sound. Not like im trying to fill a nightclub anyway.

I like the blue light on the A5 (my A1 hasnt got one, its green) :(

I like being able to put it loud sometimes, without distortion, as when you're watching movies, in the house on your own, the level of sound can completely boost the immersion. Also, when I move out in a couple of years, I can then base a fairly solid low-mid end hi fi around this amp, in a living room, and it'll be able to reach the louder sound levels required, ofc I can replace the amp then, but it gives me added flexability in where I use the amp in the future. :)

because a £400 subwoofer will only highlight the shortfalls of your current satalites. Plus im suspecting it will be horribly peaky at 150hz+. spending £400 on a sub wont magically transform the sound quality. you'll just have tonnes of bass, no midrange and a shrill treble. trust me and everybody else whos been there already, music is nothing unless you have the full package. Go for the amp and speakers first. worry about the sub last.

Geeza - i have the same missions. very nice budget speakers:)

The Monolith wont sound awfull at all, i highly doubt it is a bad sub, and no matter what anyone says, when the time comes to get a subwoofer, the Monolith will be my choice and is the one i WILL get, i was oging to get an alpine type r car sub and stick that in a box for, but it will come to like 400 quid for everyhting and wont sound as good as the Monolith, deffenitly go louder than the Monolith though, i dont see why 2 speakers if there good quality speakers will sound bad with a vvv good quality sub, as yea i want lots of bass, and quality bass, but will get the amp and speakers together.

I aint going to buy a monolith sub for my current sattelites anymore, it was just a wild though...
