GPU Upgrade Time... is 12GB enough @ 1440p?

Not gonna lie, think I’ve dodged a bullet getting the 3070ti gone.

After more research I’m really thinking 12GB isn’t going to be enough for 1440p above 120hz. This gen of cards is a real let down. Crypto and silicon shortage from previous gen at least made some kinda sense as to the ridiculous prices. I can’t really understand the reason for another massive price hike but this time coupled with gimped performance increase.

Reminds me of Apple, they prefer you to buy new every few years!

Greed is the reason and well clearly too many people out there with FOMO fever that keep these companies happy

What are you going to do?

Pull the trigger for the 4090 hehe?

What I find fascinating is that people with 3 year old mid range cards demand to play everything at ultra. Even optional DLC texture packs. It's just blows my mind. Maybe im too old, I remember back in the day I was happy if my 2 year old card could even boot a game at everything low.

It's because the GPU itself is clearly capable, the memory is the limiting factor and with more of it cards like the 3070 wouldn't struggle.

We're also only one generation later, where previously
you'd have a few more release cycles in the same timeframe.

But they will keep using the excuse they run out of grunt before VRAM, which we have seen proven now is not true and the crippling is done by not enough VRAM and still enough GPU power to run the games. Anyways we can repeat this all day long and they will continue to disagree and make up reasons why this is not true even after videos and reviews showing all this is happening.

Would be interested to know if he tested TLOU with the latest patch and nvidia driver which has solved the crashing issue for some ampere owners but knowing Steve, probably not  TLOU 1 is running beautifully for me now, before the last patch, had to use dlss balanced/performance and reduce texture to high but now with dlss quality and max settings, runs great and zero crashes in the same spot where it crashed on launch day, devs must have added more vram with the patch :p

I think we all knew 8gb would become an issue down the line in "some" situations, I even said the same way back in the original 3070 thread  My biggest problem with this vram argument is still these facts:

- it should not be ******** the bed at 1080p
- it should not be running worse on an equivalent console specced pc
- basing this on what are fundamentally broken/poorly ported games as proven by experts on the matter like Alex does and many other sites which point out the issues thus thinking that it is perfectly ok to spend a **** ton more money on gpus with 16+GB vram just to "avoid/brute force" the issues..... Out of the games Steve tested (to show where 3070 has issues), the only ones I would say that are well optimised is plague tale requirem, not sure on callisto but wasn't there a **** ton of issues with its performance? RE 4, I've seen people with 4090s also reporting crashes so not sure vram is the 100% root cause here.

Ignoring the above, you're basically just giving the thumbs up to amd/nvidia to milk you with the vram card and giving the thumbs up to developers to keep doing poor job of porting to pc, nothing less, nothing more.
