Grammar lesson 101

I actually saw that error in a local newspaper article the other day... I fear that people's English skills are plummeting and many rely on spellcheckers to spot errors for them - hence semantic errors like the brought/bought one getting through the net.

people's = people is, does not make sense to me. Shouldn't that be peoples?

Sorry couldn't resist :D

Surely it doesn't matter weather or not the word is spelt correctly, just as long as you understand what is meant.

On a forum it probably doesn't matter that much. People make similar mistakes in the real world though...

that's the problem though. When it's written - how can you figure out what is meant if the incorrect spelling changes the context?

PS...check your email... I could only get peach!

This is true. Did you know that the human mind can still understand text and read it, as long as the first and last letters are in the correct place.

Yea, I was going to write my previous post like that but it looked a right mess!

Granted, if the misspelling or wrong word changes the context then you have a problem but I doubt it would most of the time.

(Peach is good :D - I'll mail you this evening)

Ha ha ha, so was I. However it got very confusing for me!

Just one thing I'm a little unsure of is woman.

What do the two ways of spelling it mean?

Women and Woman?

People's is perfectly correct.

You are probably quite right, my understanding of English spelling can be appalling at times. That's what you get for not being bothered at school.

Ok clarify this for me, people's literally means people is/was, whereas peoples indicates possession of something by that person. Is that right?

The opposite is true.

"People's" means of (the) people.

"It's" means it is.

If you're insistent on correcting others, you ought to do so on the basis of a slightly more solid grammatical background.

[Edit]

Apostrophes.

Didn't you notice the smileys/grins in my posts...

I have seen (on here sadly) a few instances of "Could off" and "Should off"

I kid you not :(
