Grammar lesson 101

It's all been said many times before but just to reiterate where I stand;

This is a forum, not an English language exam' and genuine typos/Dyslexia sufferers are excusable; it's the people who really don't give a **** and then try to justify their posts with the usual "it's only a forum ffs" or "as long as you can understand, what's the problem?" or "language evolves" that annoy me.

It would seem that there are many users of this forum who have problems with poorly constructed posts as this subject has been cropping up on a regular basis for as long as I can remember.

The bad spelling/grammar thing also has appeared when job applications and CVs are being dicussed: many employers/management people have commented that if they found the same sort of mistakes in an application etc, the application would be binned without even being read.

Old man's rant over...... piece and *** two u awl bros ;) :D

But i do try to spell and form proper sentences, Im just crap at it :(

Btw you got discussed wrong :D :p

I get a bit annoyed, and stop me if I've ranted about this before, when people just have a bash at spelling a word and stick (SP?) after it. Why? Have they given up learning new words? Are they resigned to being an idiot? Why not just look it up? I don't get it.

But, did you notice or did the spellchecker notice? ;)

You should know by now that i read your posts deeply to make sure if you have made an error or not :p :D

The only thing that sometimes gives me a mental block is the difference between effect and affect. Otherwise I might not be great at grammar but I don't think I make too many stupid mistakes!

In fact I am still having a slight brain sprain trying to think of a way to explain effect and affect!

People get 'idiot' and 'genius' mixed up all the time, which can be quite annoying.

Example: fini, you're an idiot.
What they mean: fini, you're a genius.

EDIT: @Beren
Look at the great effects in Star Wars.
Hopefully this thread has an affect on people's grammar.

Can you give us more examples of sentences with the words 'affect' and 'effect' in it please. I'm also a little unclear on their use.

Don't forget your personal effects either...or that you can effect a change in something too.

Affect as a verb means "to influence."

'My sore throat affected my ability to speak'

Effect as a verb means "to bring about, to produce," or to "accomplish something."

'The positive effect of the lozenges helped me to speak properly again'

There are many different variations, some are really confusing if you're not great at languages (and some even if you are) but that is the most common use (I think).

This explains it a bit clearer I think:

Effect (noun): "An effect is a change that is caused in a person or thing by another person or thing" ; an effect is an outcome, a result, an influence, or a consequence.

Use effect when it is preceded by "an" or "the" or when it is followed by "of" or "on"

The policy has had several negative side-effects.
His research focuses on the effects of advertising on children.
The change in the program time appeared to have no effect on attendance.
One positive effect of the program will be increased access to education.

Affect (verb): "If something affects someone or something else, it influences them or causes them to change in some way"

Use affect when using the suffixes "ed" or "ing" or when using a word like "should," "might," "can," or "will"

The new Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation will affect many aspects of our work.
He is studying how violence on television affects children's behaviours.
I was deeply affected by his remarks.

Affect can relate to disposition (as in affection). This can be mental or physical (the madness affects your sanity, the gangrene affects your gait).

You can also affect airs and graces.

Whereas your airs and graces effect me - I am annoyed by them.

The effect of the gangrene, that affects your leg, is your wobbly walk.

Effect is more causal / correlative. Effecting change brings about change.

While we're at it, don't confuse infer and imply or irony and sarcasm either.

Imply- to convey information without stating it directly.
Infer- to derive something from evidence.

(Verbal) irony- stating the opposite of what is meant, using tone of voice or facial clues to hint at the real meaning.
Sarcasm- a cutting remark, often using irony or wit to wound.

Thanks for the explanations I hope they affect the way I construct scentences.

Cheers for the help I hope it has a positive effect.

This thread seems to have effected a positive change in your grammatical knowledge anyway. :)
