I admit to triple dipping GTAV. PS3, PS4 and finally PC.

I won’t be making that mistake again. If it’s not out on the PC until 2028, so be it.

Need to build that Hype Train, choo choo
I wonder how close to $1 billion the development cost will be this time around. Lots of hype required to make turns those costs into profits :p

Perhaps charging $150 per copy will help ... :p

e: Lol, I just read it's been revealed development of GTA6 will cost $2 billions. Just, wow.

You're going to need to keep dipping and dipping and dipping again to pay that off! Maybe a $150/month subscription, instead?

Or just selling a lot of Shark Cards to the whales in GTA Online.

Just some very quick maths on the back the preverbal napkin. Assuming that each copy sells for $60 (I think that is about right for a new game release these days) they would only have to sell about 33.3 copies million to break even. Although that number will go up once stores take their cut of the sale price, distributions cost and cheaper pricing in other regions etc. I would take a guess that their break even point is probably closer to 50 million copies. Given that GTA V has sold over 150 million copies I doubt they will have an issue shifting 50 million copies of GTA VI. That is before they start selling in game items. Which seem to be where they make their money from these days judging by where they putting their effort into making new content.

What percentage of these buyers will be new to the GTA world? A very small amount I would imagine.
The in game economy is stacked in such a way that new players buying shark cards is the only way to catch up without 100 hours of pure grinding. Players that have the gear to do the CP heist have enough money already as there really isn't much to spend it once you hit that level.

I am intrigued to know what will happened with GTA online. Will it be brand new? Total reset for everyone? Completely different game with a new economy in VC? Expansion of current with the ability to move to and from VC? Or a total overhaul on the current world?
I have no idea. If I was to guess though I'd expect no changes for the foreseeable.

I would be interested to know the percentage of those that own GTA V on the PC bought it on console first.

Yeah I'd love stats on a lot of things like that generally. I suppose only a rough way to tell would be from Rockstar login as it obviously knows which version you are playing.

I bought it three times.

First on Xbox 360.

A year later on PS4 because it has a first person mode added and 1080p resolution

And finally got the PC version which hadn't been announced before that.

Same for me. I have also made the same mistake for rdr2. Never again. R* games are unplayable in 30fps(and are surprisingly great on K+M). Will wait for PC now. Console version is inferior product and wasted money.

Source?

I can’t help but feel that this is not a good sign. That’s a ridiculous amount of money to spend on a game. Companies don’t spend that kind of money in the hopes of making $150 mill profit. No wonder they want to sell the game for $100+ per unit.

With a $60 game price and a 30% cut for platform distribution. They need to shift 48 million units to break even.
To get 1 billion in profit they need to sell 71 million units.

I guess if they are more concerned about long term shark card sales, they probably don’t care about turning a profit within the first 6 months.

GTA V sold over 190m to date, plus the income from online, I think they're fine.

Take-Two’s most recent earnings call revealed that Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold 190 million copies in its lifetime, with over five million units in 2023’s Q4 alone. This means that the game has possibly made over 7.7 billion dollars to date.

I call BS on the $2 billion number. That would be several times larger than any entertainment project in history. Show me the source

Also keep in mind Insomniacs entire financials just leaked and the development costs for Spiderman 1, Miles Morales, Spiderman 2, Venom, Wolverine, Ratchet and Clank, Xmen 1, Xmen 2 and Xmen 3 (Xmen games are for PlayStation 6, using budgeted costs) all combined is less than 2 billion.

So its a rumour based on the hack and from this site it states that $2 billion has been allocated for the game. This figure could also include the cost of post launch content. It alleviates one concern and adds another.

There's gold in them thar hills! Plus if they make a game like a film, throw in some porn and controversy, that's the money making trifecta!

At this point I really don't think Rockstar need to do much to build a hype train.

I played GTA1 on modem, directly dialled to someone else back then :) I used to play GTA4 online, it was wild. I only clocked 30 hours of GTA V apparently, probably too much Trevor for me. I feel like giving it another go after watching the new trailer.

I prefer RDR, hope there is a third and for PC. Don't want any 30/60 fps games thanks.
