Hull City AFC confirms that Phil Brown has been relieved of his managerial duties at the club and has been placed on gardening leave with immediate effect. Brian Horton and Steve Parkin will take charge of first-team duties until further notice.

We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Phil for the major success achieved during a period of four seasons in charge at the club and wish him every success for the future. Promotion to the Premier League in 2008 and retention of our status on the last day of the 2009 season are unique events in the history of Hull City AFC and both were achieved under Phil's stewardship during a period which will never be forgotten by all connected with the club.

However, retention of Premier League status is paramount and the board believes that a change in managerial direction is the correct option at this time. The club will keep supporters completely up-to-date in respect of any managerial appointment but, in the meantime, Brian Horton and Steve Parkin will prepare the team for our important game at Portsmouth next Saturday.

Adam Pearson
Chairman, Hull City AFC

I think it's harsh to be honest, would he of got the sack if they'd of drawn at the weekend to Arsenal? Probably not and the only reason they did loose to Arsenal was because the keeper gifted them a goal

I think he'd of easily kept them up

The only reason they lost to Arsenal? They had one shot at goal all game which was a penalty, which was offside so should never have even been considered. That's terrible at home, with two strikers on the field

Anyway, good news, couldn't have come at a better time, at least it feels like Arsenal are a bit responsible this way, which I'd love to think was true

I'm not Brownies biggest fan but I don't understand the logic behind sacking him at this stage of the season where (Hull) pretty much sunk as it is, so unless there planning for like in the Championship or have someone else lined up PDQ it seems odd.

Also reading the statement he's not actually sacked yet. He's just releaved of duty and on gardening leave, I know in football terms tha pretty much sacked but not quite yet.

I'm with Tom, think it's a bit harsh, they should have at least had someone better to bring in instead of the usual number two taking over and getting relegated anyway. There must be more to this story.

Rumors were abound that he was going to be sacked before the Arsenal game. Seems an odd time to do it as you say as they realistically wouldn't expect have expected to take points of Arsenal.

absolutely daft to do it at this stage of the season - and Brown was doing a decent job, who do they think will automatically do a better one?

Be interesting to see their reason behind it, there's 9 games left for them, and he is still Hulls most successful manager. They must have a replacement lined up that will be implemented within a week, as whilst Horton and Parkin are upto job, I don't see any long term viability for them, nor would either of them probably want the job.

With Hulls remaining fixtures, its fairly possible they will stay up, with only 1 top 4 game, and a fair few 6 pointers, still think Brown could have kept them up. Going to be interesting to watch now.

I hardly think it was the Arsenal game alone that's cost him the job. It's not like they were doing comfortably before that. Tonked by Everton, bottom of the league (bar the inevitably relegated Portsmouth), and players falling out under his stewardship (not to mention the ton of bad blood he's made with many people in his time there). I'm not entirely sure how you can say he'd "easily" keep them up when they're deep in the mire with only 9 games left.

He was always on borrowed time when Pearson came in, as I think the latter always considered him slightly culpable for the wastage of the Duffen era. Got told to buck his ideas up, and briefly did, but obviously not for long enough. Clearly Pearson thinks now is a better time to do the deed than the end of the season.

FAKE EDIT: Also, the "gardening leave" stuff most likely due to the cost of having to pay Brown off from a straight sack. So I'm guessing there won't be a replacement brought in until the end of the season.

What is it with football clubs and premature sackings. Don't agree with timings of Huges (Mancini's winning record was slightly lower a couple of weeks back) and Brown (9 games left, can't see someone else do anything drastically different to Brown).

Is all this hate for the Tigers or Brownie, I didn't think we were important enough to be that unpopular a club tbh.
