Greenlizard0 Boxing Day Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26 - 27th December 2011]

looking at that league table and fair play to Arsenal, amazing that they could replace Chelsea in the top 4 after the start to the season. If Spurs can keep this form up then Chelsea need to worry about top 4.

Soooooo happy!!!!!!!!!!!

Last few minutes, Charlton drawing and Sheff Wed winning looking to close the gap to two points.

Charlton get a last minute winner and Walsall score 2 in five minutes to beat Wed.

Charlton now 8 points clear!!!!!!!! YEEESSSS!!!!!!

Another below par performance but I don't think there's another side in the country that's had as much bad luck as we have. If it's not questionable decisions then it's the woodwork or inspired keeping. I honestly can't think of a keeper that's come to Anfield and not had a great game this season. That said, we've got to do far better in the final third. Downing's getting a lot of stick but I thought he was excellent today; he constantly beat the fullback and delivered decent balls into the box but either nobody was forward or the finishing wasn't good enough.

As I mentioned last week, our priortiy in the January transfer window should be to sign somebody to fill in for Lucas. No 2 man combination from Gerrard, Henderson and Adam will naturally work. All 3 look to break forward and when the ball is breaking in midfield we've got nobody backing up play to maintain our pressure. There was always a lot of negative talk about the Alonso/Mascherano partnership being too defensive but the reality was that they played a huge part offensively; they were always there to pick up the loose ball and keep teams pinned back, without Lucas we don't have anybody that can do that now.

Even above someone who can actually score?

Yes. We're missing a lot of chances but since Lucas has been out of the side we've not had total control of a game once. If we're in control of a game then we can pin teams back and attack more and hopefully, we'll finally score.

How many times today (particularly towards the end of the game) did we go on an attack and the ball would be cleared 25-30 yards from goal and we'd have nobody there, allowing Blackburn to run the ball clear? Had we had somebody in those positions, backing up play, we'd have been able to build another attack.

Yeah i agree with that, but lets say we have this player and made another 6 chances at the end there, i still don't feel we would have scored :(

Spearing can do that job, no one can score goals. We need to ship out Carroll and buy a proven goalscorer.

I don't think its a case of ship Carroll out and get another in.
Kuyt's never been prolific and won't score much (or at all recently :p) for us, same with Bellamy who's more like a creator who can score a few.
So we really only have Suarez and Carroll, we have place for another striker for sure.

Spearing can do that job.

No he can't, at least not well enough. Even with a 3 man midfield against Fulham we didn't control the midfield well enough. He gets about the pitch well and he gives 100% but he's not smart enough positionally to play the role.

I think Gerrard could do it but it would have to be in a 3 man midfield which means, unless you're going to bring in somebody better than Suarez, signing another striker isn't going to effect the first team a great deal.

Suarez is spent and desperately needs a rest. He's lost a yard of pace as well as his confidence in front of goal and could be out for up to 8 games.

With Carroll (aka The English Christmas Donkey) being so poor I'd argue we need two quality strikers with Carroll being shown the door and Suarez playing as a front three or behind the other two strikers. If we only buy one striker we could easily well run him in the ground just as we have with Suarez.

As someone said earlier chelsea are going to have to invest their way to a top 4 finish. Thats not going to make RA or UEFA happy though there are a few top draw players available if the money is right.

As for Torres i thought he looked the brightest spark on the pitch. It was Mata, Lampard and Romeu lacking the spark today.

Everyone ready for the headline match of the day Stoke vs Aston Villa.

Listen out for this song they thought of over at the fans hq.
