Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 13th Sept 2021]

Shame more people don't do it because no one else moved and so often we complain about players not reacting or anticipating a rebound etc so just falling short of poking it in. He just never gives up.
Plenty do it. He wasn’t really following it in anyway. Looked like he was shaping for a cross so moved into the box…goalie gifts him the ball then he legs it to tap it in. People are over thinking the most basic of goals.

Remember when Origi scored against Everton because Pickford fumbled the ball to him? Let’s have MOTD specials about Origis ability to anticipate the goalie dropping it.:cry::cry:

The fawning over Ronaldo this weekend has been rank all things considered.

On the flip side sometimes you need a bit of individual magic to break a team down. I mean how many times have pundits said that City were far too predictable to defend against because they are drilled to follow a set of rules. I think that in itself can be Guardiola's weakness but when he was at Barcelona he had Messi who had that individual magic to break the system and make them unplayable. The last Champions League final was a prime example of him overthinking of what needed to be done.

Oh of course you do and thats a massive part of why you pay big money for players. They make something from nothing, they pick that amazing ball out. KDB doesn't wow you by beating 3 guys and banging it in the top corner he plays the pass that most other players would make 10% of the time and he makes it inch perfect 8/10. The difference between the good teams and the great teams is how much they rely on players completing really low percentage outcome actions.

The German national side are a great example of well coached players who just play good football that is a joy to watch. They just make the right passes and the right runs at the right time and make it look easy as times. Their most recent win was a prime example of that. A joy to watch.

You beat them 7-2 on aggregate last season, it's the historical big 6 you struggled with. I believe only spurs had a worse record against the traditional big 6 (Man U/City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Pool).
Ole has got a decent record as a manager against most of those teams - its really only Arsenal that always seem to get a bit lucky in the marginal games (they have hammered us a few times recently too)

Its definitely the low block which Utd struggled with last season - must have dropped at least 12 points from "winnable" games against bottom of the league teams last season

We did ok yesterday but score in a sense flatters us. Utd desperately need a decent CM pair, Matic is long past his best and McFred would be excellent if they were one player in the DM position but as a pivot its equivelant to any other team playing with 9 outfield players. Hopefully we try Donny in the DM position in the WHU EFL Cup game coming up (I want to see him get a start and reasonable chance, but wouldnt care in the slightest if we lose the game lol)

He was moving before the goalie fumbled it. About the only one to do it.

Just watch it at 10 seconds on 0.25 speed. Mason was going for a shot and no one else bar Ronaldo thought to go. Everyone else around him stood still. It's the intelligence to predict what might happen. Not many forwards have that in their arsenal.

Listen to what Alan Shearer says at 3:30. I think the greatest striker in premier League history knows what he is talking about.

I think his point is that plenty of goals are scored by players following in and getting a tap in. Its not worthy of gushing over. Its just what pundits do over good players. They talk about when Rooney scores an overhead kick for years and ignore the other 15 better ones over that time because it was Rooney.

Thats just how it is and I think thats what he is getting at. The pundits make out like its something that no one ever does when it something that a lot of players do. I would reckon I could show 20 examples in the current season where Ronaldo would have got a goal if he had decided to follow up on a shot or guess that player X would do Y and he doesn't.

I don't see how the scoreline flattered us the xg was 2.58 - 0.63

It didn't flatter us massively but I would wager that for Ronaldos first goal the xG was very close to 1 which is almost a guaranteed goal. So effectively the xG was 1.58 for the other 3 goals or close to twice as many goals as expected. That being said, their xG was only 0.68 and they still scored.

xG isn't an exact science and I need to read into how its calculated a bit more. Like, is the xG for the first goal separated into xG for Greenwoods shot + xG for finishing into an empty goal from a couple of yards or is it based on Greenwoods shot + the likelihood of someone following in and getting on the end of a dropped shot. Does the deflection effect the xG for it etc?

Personally I think 2-1 wouldn't have been an unfair scoreline. Newcastle wasted time from the first minute to the last and in the last 15 minutes they were a bit dead on their feet but they defended well and hit us on the break a number of times. I felt 4-1 flattered us. 2-3 goals would probably have been fairer on Newcastle. I blame the ref for letting them get away with their time wasting honestly.

Exactly that. Making out like it’s genius from Ronaldo when it really isn’t. He’s following up a shot…that’s all it is. The greatest goal in Merseyside derby history was Origi following up a shot.

Its extremely basic being made out to be something spectacular.

Someone like Origi might do it once by luck but the whole point is a player like Ronaldo is so good with his brain that his positioning is always top draw. It is why the greats can play till basically 40 and the normal players are done by 34.

His first game back and the jealousy filled hate is hilarious. I reckon the guy thrives on the salty tears - explains why he’s still a phenomenon at 36.

Watching Paul Merson eat humble pie yesterday was fantastic. Everyone fawns over Messi but who is the one chickening out into a farmer's league. He could have quite easily come to City.

Anyone that’s pays attention to anything Paul Merson has to say is probably operating with an equally drug and alcohol destroyed brain, the man is a joke. :p

I'm glad I've been busy this weekend. The arguments in this thread are ridiculous, from both those making out that the goals were anything more than any goal you see every weekend and those getting upset at Utd fans wetting themselves over them.

No one said it was spectacular. Thats ridiculous. However what people are rightly pointing out is that this is a man at 36 who still has quick thinking and reactions as illustrated by the first goal and still has pace as illustrated by the second which are attributes that tend to be lost by that age. Being amazed or impressed by it isnt about the goal itself but by what it tells us about the player.

That particular word wasn’t used but one right up there but as I’ve just said, it’s done now.
