Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12th - 15th August 2022]

Forest looking 100% better than their opening day fixture. Hopefully Steve Cooper has managed to get all the new signings to gel and they can stay up :)

People keep saying this about the team needing to get Cooper's methods, but he's coached a youth international team to the World Cup where his time with them is limited.

And then last year, he basically coached a team from being a defensive, boring mess into one of the best sides in the Championship overnight. If anyone can quickly shape a group of players into a team, it's Cooper.

of course xG includes shots missed. Chelsea's xG was slightly higher than Spurs so not sure what omnom is talking about.
I haven't looked at any of the xG or know how 'big chance' is derived but I would guess that if you have attempts >0.X xg it qualifies as a 'big chance'.
So you could in theory have more 'big chances' whilst having lower volume of overall shots/xg?

Yeah that seems likely but creating lots of small chances doesn't mean you haven't created a whole lot

Souness predictably getting flack from the baying mob because he called it a 'mans game' when speaking about... mens football.

yeah big chances are just a chance creation with a higher than normal conversion rate, pens for example are listed a big chance as they are around .75 xg. Whether a shot with a .5 xg or higher is listed as a big chance I have no idea though, take Liverpool's game with Fulham last week. the xg for us was 3.00 and we had 4 big chances from 11 shots and Fulham had 1 big chance (the penalty) and a xg of 1.45 from 9 shots.

No you need to be outraged because there was a woman sat next to him at the time and England won the euros a few weeks back. Context doesn't matter one iota.

Regardless of xG, Chelsea were utterly robbed yesterday. Spurs have always been at their best when playing on the counter attack because 90% of their game plan is "hit them on the break with Son and Kane". That doesn't mean that they weren't completely outplayed and outclassed by Chelsea. They tried to go toe to toe for a lot of the game and came up short.

Neither of these teams will be competing for the league though. Chelsea are missing a top class striker and Spurs just aren't good enough outside of Son and Kane.

Question for the xG gurus... what is counted when a cross comes in and its on a plate and the striker completely misses it? I think it was Loftus Cheek that completely missed an absolute peach of a cross that was about as good as it gets and was a metre of two from goal. If he had connected it was almost a guaranteed goal. I assume that isn't counted in xG as there was no contact.

xG considers shots, if there is no shot then it isn't considered. I do believe there is another metric that includes that but can't remember what it's called.

indeed, Understat are pretty good for xg stuff: https://understat.com/match/18220 for yesterdays chelsea/spurs game

RE this the big chance thing Kane/Son and Sessegnon all had big chances in yesterdays game, yet the xg for the shots were 0.31/0.25 and 0.27 respectively.. as with all things stat related its not a good marker on its own.

The chance I am talking about isn't on there so I assume that unless the player makes contact it isn't counted.

Seems to be the case. I guess its very hard to assign a value to the latter as there is a massively difference between "he nearly got there and it would have been a tap in" and "he got there and completely missed the tap in". One should probably count and the other shouldn't.

Ten Hag should do a Fergie and swap the lime green shirt out at half time and say the players couldn’t see one another ;)
To be fair watching the highlights I thought it was a crap colour that blended in with the grass a bit (probably less on issue from the perspective of people on the pitch as opposed to TV camera angle).

Will be interesting to see how DDG handles this, he had a slightly shaky period a couple of years ago but came back strong, I've always rated him and with Henderson going out on loan you'd imagine he'll keep his place.

We haven't got any competition for DDG at the moment. I assume that EtH didn't think that Henderson offered enough of an upgrade in DDGs weaker areas for his downgrade in the areas DDG is far better (ironically shot stopping). DDG will be replaced if he doesn't sort it out though. That pass to Eriksen was an utter horror pass. Madness.

I watched the whole game and they very much did IMO. First to everything. Dominated possession. Should have won if it wasn't for awful refereeing. Spurs didn't have a single player on the pitch who shone.

Sure, a few decisions went against them, everyone has those at times.

But Chelsea shouldn't be blaming anyone except themselves, they missed some right sitters in front of goal.
