Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12th - 17th March 2022]

Honestly though is it really our game plan to have such loss of control in the game(my perception, obviously not Klopp's if that is the plan)? Yes we generally defend well if we retain our shape but it doesn't feel comfortable at all albeit if I compare to 19/20 nothing will ever look as comfortable or inevitable as Liverpool guaranteed to win.
Feels like we're on the cusp of a game where a team just manages to have that bit of quality with the opportunities presented and go up quickly against us in those 20-30 minute spells. Granted, that naturally happens and you can't win everything but definitely feels like we're on the edge at times.

If it is our game plan I certainly don't think it'll work deeper in the CL against really good teams.
Of course it's not our game plan but we've been playing every 3 days since mid December(?), we're not going to be at our best every week and you have to accept that and you need the underlying quality of your squad and the character of the players to prove the difference at times like this. The fact that we were able to beat a decent, in form Arsenal side while not being close to our best and to ultimately win it fairly comfortably is testament to the quality and character of our side. In the first 45 minutes Arsenal were very solid and compact, preventing us from really getting going in attack and were able to spring attacks on us but it amounted to nothing because once they got past our midfield they come up against an unreal back line and when Thiago makes that mistake to gift them a chance, we've got that beautiful bearded Brazilian in goal.

There will be games to come, away at City and against the better sides remaining in the CL where we'll need to perform better than we did yesterday but it's reassuring that we're no longer a side that has to be at our absolute best to win games, which we were 4-5 years ago. It's also pretty daunting for sides coming up against us to know that even if we're not at our best and they perform well, they've still got a massive battle on their hands to take anything from us.

Maybe the other teams have slightly caught up?

Need to give some credit to the teams who go against Liverpool?

No they really haven't caught up. The gulf between City and Liverpool and the rest is massive. When Liverpool are required to kick it up a gear or three, they will. They didn't need to against Arsenal. Manu have the desire and funds to close that gap but are run like a comedy club. The rest don't have the funds or desire to spend it to close that gap. Newcastle have the funds but whether they really spend it remains to be seen or how long the rules allow them to based off their income.

The gap in quality is as big as I can ever remember. Klopp is quite clearly a genius, especially considering Liverpool's wage structure. Future EPL goat.

Liverpool also have Klopp which is a major factor as well for me.

Those are fair points and rightly as you say its nice to be in this position when we basically would've won drawn/lost numerous games when not at our best vs any side.

But yeah still worry we're gonna get blasted if we start wrong against a side who are just slightly efficient in the final third. (Obviously not Villa levels but you never know :D)

I don't doubt that Arsenal and some others have improved, but we have similar performances against much worst teams.

Arsenal have been having 1 game a week for the past 6 months. Liverpool are battling on three different fronts. It is very naive to think Arsenal have improved massively. Once they get back into Europe and the games will be coming thick and fast the chickens will come home to roost.

Why is it naïve? Have you watched Arsenal the last X seasons? If we had a striker who could score we'd be much closer to the top 3, it may be that which means we don't get top 4 though. Regardless, performances on the pitch this calendar year have been much better than previous. We are actually entertaining to watch most of the time now.

But you don't and you will buy DCL and/or Richarlison and the cycle will go on. If Man City had a striker they would be even further away from you, but they don't. I don't think Arsenal will invest enough to maintain top 4 with the way spending is going and continue to go. I'm sure you will sporadically do it, Chelsea might dip now depending on their future but season in season out ain't happening with your owners.

You are near enough on the same points as us Manchester United and we have been diabolical this season and are miles from City and Liverpool. Didn't Arsenal spent 130+ million in the summer as well?

Arteta's win percentage is on par with OGS and he was a PE teacher.

what are we thinking on Everton v Newcastle game? I bet Frank is looking forward to it.

Everton are down. They are beyond saving. DCL and Richarlison needs to get back on it but DCL looks shot and Richarlison looks uninterested. I'm expecting another Everton battering. Financially will they be better off going down with the parachute payments and clearing the absolute mess they made of FFP with managers overspending on turds?

We have games in hand and have been more diabolical than United in previous seasons. The way we are playing this season is definitely an improvement and that's with a very young squad. I'm by no means an Arteta fanboy but its pretty difficult to ignore that progress is being made.

How have you come to the conclusion they’d be better of financially going down?
