Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29th - 31st Jan 2021]

Seems pretty clear he’s responding to om listing specific chances, not xG...

Either team could’ve won with half decent finishing, was a decent watch although arsenal probably feel hard done by with the decisions

sorry but whats xG?

From Opta:
EXPECTED GOALS (XG)

EXPECTED GOALS (XG) MEASURES THE QUALITY OF A SHOT BASED ON SEVERAL VARIABLES SUCH AS ASSIST TYPE, SHOT ANGLE AND DISTANCE FROM GOAL, WHETHER IT WAS A HEADED SHOT AND WHETHER IT WAS DEFINED AS A BIG CHANCE.

ADDING UP A PLAYER OR TEAM’S EXPECTED GOALS CAN GIVE US AN INDICATION OF HOW MANY GOALS A PLAYER OR TEAM SHOULD HAVE SCORED ON AVERAGE, GIVEN THE SHOTS THEY HAVE TAKEN.

Neither team really deserved the win yesterday. I thought Arsenal had the better of the game despite what the xG suggests.

We’re looking crap again and not scraping wins anymore. It’s been coming for months. I’m sure we will win a few games and people will claim Ole is doing well again.

He’s reached the limit of his ability and this is where we will sit. We will get better if we sign better players but not enough to do anything of note. Very frustrating.

I didn't think there was really anything in it in terms of balance of play. Neither side seemed to be able to string together a spell longer than 10 mins or so - Arsenal started the better side, Utd had 10 mins at the end of the first half, Arsenal had 10 mins at the start of the 2nd half and then Utd had 10 mins at the end.

Yeah it's come to the point I might just stop watching them. Had to do similar under Mourinho at one point.

We are just setup to counterattack , you won't win games or trophies like that.

Look at the average position of MC players for example, all midfielders etc will be high up the pitch pressing and ready to win the ball back.

Ole sounds satisfied but his body language in the last 2 games tells you otherwise. He says you can't control the result, well you can try to control the performance which will hopefully give you a result. Really needs to be some progression now but there hasn't all season so wouldn't hold my breath

That isn't how we played at all yesterday, we had 57% of the possession. Arsenal were the team set up in a low block and countering.
But we struggle to break teams down , because it's not our style otherwise we wouldn't have any problem breaking teams down.

Also I remember arsenal pressing high in the second half and winning the ball back. Later on the game not obviously when the players will be tired

Everyone struggles to break teams down. Don't forget City only beat the blades 1-0. It is just in recent times City and the Pool have been able to unlock those defensives although the later seem to have forgotten recently.

Reality is only the top 8 teams really try to play football. The other twelve are just looking to survive for the prem money. A break away super League couldn't come any sooner tbh.

Every team struggles with that, this is why most smaller teams play that way against bigger teams. City struggled to break down SU, Liverpool struggled to break down Burnley etc. There is no magical solution to beating a team that is entirely set out not to concede.

Counterattacking is the easiest style of football if you have a player that can pick a pass and some fast strikers who are reasonably clinical. Like you say though, it doesn't really lead to trophies. Leicester managed it in a year where everyone else was god awful and it was enough. All the top teams are too strong currently for that to work.

Its because Liverpool and City players all know their roles, when to press, how to press, where to move with and without the ball, who makes what runs etc. You are always going to struggle when your strikers are misfiring like ours are but as soon as you start lamenting missing a single good chance in a game you are in trouble.

I don't know what we realistically expect from Ole. What elite level job do you give to someone woefully underqualified and then expect them to learn on the job when the job isn't a science. This is why teams bring in proven managers and most managers come up through the ranks. The cream rises to the top. You can't just give an average manager time and expect them to become a top manager.

Guardiola and Zindane were extremely underqualified for their jobs yet look how well they have done. Glenn hoddle was player manager for Chelsea in 1994 and by 1998 he was manager of the biggest job in England when managing England still meant something. Kenny Dalglish became manager when Liverpool were still the best team in the Europe and went onto win a title with Blackburn.

Ole is in his second full season do not forget. If we can finish with around 70-80 points and challenge for silverware it will be a step in the right direction from last season. A few bits here and there in the summer and I can see no reason for us not to be challenging for the title.

I do not argue that Ole was underqualified for the job at the time but he has the club as his number one priority and loyalty. The players respect him for what he has done. Unlike someone like Arteta he is a true legend and he has done a lot for our club and is only getting better.

What's going on with Rodgers neck, can't seem to look straight

Liverpool were on a bad run.

MC didn't blow away Sheffield, but had no problem despatching West Brom etc.

I'm under no illusion MC are the better team
