Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [6th - 8th May 2023]

I mean you cant disagree with what I posted to be fair, its a 50/50 shot.
And? He more than makes up for it in other areas of his game, and is an excellent pairing with Varane.

Trying to make out Martinez is a poor signing is really clutching at straws.....especially when there are so many legitimate criticisms of this season.

As a Liverpool fan I can't believe that United fans are questioning ETH at the moment.

You'll end this season lower in the table than when OGS got you to second (although that was a season where every other team had a shocker aside from City), but to me there has been a massive improvement under ETH. He has a much more clear style of play than OGS ever did, and when it's working his sides will dominate matches. That was never the case with OGS - his teams always looked bad, but in his "good" season frequently got dug out of trouble by a wondergoal from Bruno, Pogba or Rashford.

OGS never developed a repeatable system to win football matches. ETH has made significant strides towards that this season. He's the first manager United have had since Ferguson who appears to have come with a plan and to be bold enough to make big calls in line with that.

He reminds me of where Arteta was two years ago with Arsenal. There will be ups and downs in a season but as long as the overall trajectory remains positive, which I think it clearly is, you'd be mad to get rid of him.

So, as a Liverpool fan... Please ditch him and bring back Olé!

Interesting opta stats for those who are interested. Not putting any blame on any individual team but what it does show with those figures is just how little of every teams matches is actually playing football. More evidence that clockstopping is needed in some form imo.

Hold my beer

It baffles me. I rarely talk about Liverpool, Arsenal, City ect because… they just don’t really interest me at all. Some posters spend more time talking about rival clubs which is just weird.
But it the boxing forum you spend more time talking about the fighter you hate than the one you like. Why is that different? It's an internet forum with people discussing football and the most common topic is Man United because they have the most active posters on here due to the extended period of winning when they bought the most titles with the least competition and all those people in London decided they had an Grandad from Manchester.

My dad was born and bred Tottenham so I was just running away!

Definitely, everyone needs to bear in mind that all that chart shows is time of ball in play, it doesnt necessarily show timewasting. For example, a team who defends hard and fast, will by nature concede more fouls etc, which will of course affect time in play. A team who plays out from defence will of course keep the ball in play more than a team who defends by hitting a ball clear (which may then go out for a throw in). There are many factors that affect the time in play above and beyond simple timewasting.

The point of that chart really is that it shows more than anything just how little of the average 90mins of Premier League football is two teams actually playing football and thats something which imo needs to be addressed by some form of clockstopping.

A few are. If we end up with one cup and a Europa place things might be different. Two cups and CL spot + buy a striker, happy days with ETH.
I just don't agree - look at Klopp's first season at Liverpool, Arteta's at Arsenal, or even Pep's at City when people questioned whether he could do it in this league. They need to be given time to shift the style of play in the direction they want and to recruit accordingly. The time to worry is if there is no apparent improvement in style of play, or if results plateau season after season.

United will be a better team next season than they are this season. Whether that translates to winning things only time will tell - Liverpool and Chelsea will also be better, City will obviously be up there, I'd expect Newcastle to be as well, and I hope Arsenal sustain what they've done.

Ultimately the jury remains out on whether ETH will win enough silverware, but he's moving things in the right direction for the first time in more than a decade, and people expecting significantly more from his first season are deluded.

We will only be up there next season if we buy quality and depth, otherwise we will be in a similar position to west ham

Not at all I spend more time defending boxers than hating on them. Different sub forum though.
