Greenlizard0 PL & Championship Football Thread ** spoilers ** [6th - 8th May 2023]

I watched it live and West Ham had loads of chances and probably the better ones too
i was following text feed on BBC, they said it could have been 4-0

It's annoying as we need west ham to need to beat Leeds to get enough points, then they can hopefully switch off before our game in the last match. I hope this doesn't put them on the beach before Leeds, and then they get an ear bashing and go out hard against us instead.

Weghorst has been explained above. The Glazers wouldn't sanction a signing due to the sale situation and we urgently needed cover for Martial. It's not like there are loads of strikers available and our scouting network appears to be non-existent.

Antony doesn't look a great buy at present but he's not the reason the team are suddenly rubbish, we were playing well not all that long ago.
Wasnt it because of FFP rather then the Glazers not sanctioning a sale? As for urgently needing cover for Martial...Martial has been "injured" 20 times at United missing 79 games, if you're finding yourself needing "urgent" cover for someone with that record then you're doing something wrong.

Its poor management of your squad which we have to assume is ETH's doing if it isnt then what is it? Carraghers point RE Casemiro is also a very valid one.

Poor management? He's not really had much choice. Injuries and a weak squad.

Who knows the real reason but I'm sure ETH didn't choose to sign Weghorst as his #1 striker target. He was probably one of the few attainable players out there at the time.

Yes I agree Martial is useless - nothing new there.

It was clear to me that ETH's priority was Frenkie de Jong. Casemiro was signed in a panic after the poor start to the season - I don't think ETH was behind that.

I am not blindly defending ETH here - some alarm bells are ringing - but it's unfair to just blame him when the club has been a complete clown show for the past decade.

I'd say benching an £80 mil defender and getting rid of Ronaldo at examples of good management. The fact is the team is full of over rated players and over 30s; Panic Buy FC

Over 30s...like Casemiro who was signed under ETH?

As for benching Maguire, hardly a genius move is it. What isnt good management is knowing Maguire wasn't very good, knowing Varane loves an injury and signing a cb in the summer...

As for Ronaldo, he left on his terms...not ETH's. Ronaldo made it easy by throwing a strop and making it public.

You make it sound like ETH is responsible for all.

Or are you just another Liverpool fan having a pop?

I was absolutely positive Newcastle would win that. I was in the MCG yesterday afternoon watching Collingwood Magpies come from behind at half time to smash Sydney and I was certain it was an omen :o

Cracking game though and I think if Murphys shot goes in then its obviously going to be totally different. The VAR pen was ridiculous, don't know why they need so long to review it. Seemed clear cut to me it hit his knee after the first replay. If they need to re-watch it a dozen times in super slo mo then are they telling us they don't think it's clear? Should have taken them 5 seconds. Then if that is the case then they should go with the ref's initial decision, Shirley. I don't know why Wilson didn't contest the drop ball for the restart either.
When Bruno is off his game then we rarely get a result. I think without Longstaff (who I am often critical of) he's not as effective and it has a knock on effect to Big Jo. He was caught in possession a few times in the middle of the park too which is uncharacteristic of him - that lead to Southampton's goal last week too.

Can't win em all. Still in 3rd miraculously but even if we drop to 4th or 5th it's still an amazing season. Fair play to Arsenal though, worked hard and were the better side for the majority of the game especially in midfield. There will be a few bruises tomorrow too as the back 4 and Big Jo properly roughed them up.

Comms getting a bit overexcited there, save of the season?! I'd hope 90% of prem goalies would stop that!
There's always some keepers that end up being media darlings for a period, flavour of the month/season where they are poised waying to jump on any save and wax lyrical about how amazing it was. Martinez obviously had it after the World Cup.
Works both ways of course, you get keepers like Lloris and presumably now De Gea where they will be desperate to roll out lines about how "shaky" they look, "lack of confidence" / "makes the team nervous", being sure to turn up the audio mix on the opposition fans when they receive the ball to feet.

I don't blame them because having a narrative benefits the entertainment industry, but it can be a bit echo-chambery at times, Arsenal are probably at a point now where they get more credit than they perhaps should do on merit (on a game-by-game basis, not overall season) just like in seasons gone by the knives were out waiting for any excuse to get stuck in (like when they lost the opening 3 games of the season, two of which were against Man City and Liverpool who were smashing out 90+ points every season and hence I fully expected to lose to).

The sense in this post goes out the window immediately when anyone realises Man United did sign a centre back and a benched Ronaldo crying to piers Morgan appears to be on "on his terms"...

Bless ya...

ETH gave Maguire the fair shake of the stick like any manager would. He wasn't going to replace him immediately and we have 4 senior centre backs.

Casemiro has been great however like most the squad has gone off the boil now that we're deep into a long season, he's playing a more exhaustive role and we've lost key players around him.

The intensity of this season will help to condition all the players for next year, this is season 1, they've never ran this much in their United careers.

ETH has to have time to evaluate those players and that's the purpose of this season. This isn't a squad of great players. He's plugged gaps in bringing in leadership figures and directness in attack. He's got a workable tune out of the squad for 75% of this season with 2 finals and 1 Cup at the minimum.

It is going to be the first time or at least one of the only times in the past 4 months that we will have had 1 week off to rest/prepare. Will be interesting to see how everyone does with a full weeks rest.

Oh ai yea I forgot he spent an absolute fortune on a cb with a 50/50 chance of winning an aerial duel...great.

As for Ronaldo...he absolutely left on his terms. A month before the interview you had your manager praising him only for Ronaldo to refuse to come on, have a hour long interview with Piers Morgan and eventually get his wish, a move to Saudi.

I can’t quite work out how that handball wasn’t given. Its one of the most blatant ones ive seen. Didn’t see much wrong with Antonios goal either pathetic decisions really.

Now you're just shifting the goal post on your cb statement.

Reg, Ronaldo. There's different ways to manage egos in a squad, ETH has his where he'll try to maintain harmony and then you have the likes of Mourinho who will slate them in public.

Yes of course Ronaldo wanted to go to South Africa... I mean Saudi.
