Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [27th - 29th October 2023]

I don’t think Ten Hag has got any ideas on how to turn it around unfortunately. He looks a bit like Ole, in the way that he has his way, and that’s it. If it doesn’t work, he tries the same old subs in the same order and hope for the best

Not blaming injuries but there is a sniff of a decent side if Martinez/Shaw/Malacia/AWB/Casemiro are fit and then other players get played in their natural positions.

ETH isn't the issue - we can't continue to blame manager after manager.....I do blame him for some of the current team being played out of position for sure.

Players/Owners and the board need to look at themselves just as much

The managers are the problem

The manager picks the team and eth has picked who to sign

Poundland haaland looks rubbish and antony and martinez are eths players same goes for onana and mount

By that metric Arteta should be sacked then. He has spent more money than anyone in past couple of seasons and bottled a league. If he bottles this year then surely he must go too?

United did look more cohesive when they had a near enough fully fit squad but that’s to be expected when you’ve got players who’ve won a lot like Varane and Casemiro.

The issue is that most fans and more importantly for ETH, stakeholders, don’t care for “excuses” and he’ll be gone if they can’t find any consistent form by the end of the season.

They’ve also not got many players who are very marketable or even likeable. It’s all just very meh.

How are you comparing them. Arsenal are improving every season, they are playing good positive football more importantly, they are winning. United are a mess, you have players being forced to train with the kids because he wont say sorry then have another acting like a petulant baby on the pitch who has accusations of assault over his head. Arsenal have spent a lot of money but its on players that are suited to how they want to play football. Verane was signed because he's Verane, the same with Casemiro. Even Lisandro Martinez isnt suited to the league, its an old argument...but he's too small, maybe it would work for the under 18 team.

ETH doesnt have a clue, he's never managed at the level he is managing now. He signs players he's worked with or players well past their prime. Signing Antony alone should be a massive red flag to anyone.

Interesting season this.

Theres usually only a couple of title challengers by this stage of this season. There’s currently 4-5 teams who look like serious contenders.

And then there’s about the same again at the bottom who look like they won’t come close to 40 points.

What's ten hag's style of play? He has been there for nigh on a yer and a half, can you honestly say you know how your team is supposed to play?

Go watch how we played from September to around Feb/March this year. In fact September and Feb when ETH won two manager of the month awards. He loves playing inverted wingers and loves his full backs and Cb's to be that side footed. We have been playing basically all season without left footed CB's/full backs and when Martinez was playing he has been playing injured.

You will not have any style of play with the injuries we have. Liverpool fell off a cliff for two different seasons because of injuries. Our current situation is far worse imo.

Shaw and Martinez especially are key and AWB too believe it or not. He was playing that inverted full back roll a lot better than Dalot. We have also had sporadic injuries on too many other players so the team has just been a mismatched mess.

Go look through our starting 11's from the beginning of the season. It is radically different almost from game to game. You cannot get any form or consistency going when you are like that.

The managers have to take some blame, but ultimately who appointed them all - who let them have transfer autonomy? The owners.

I don't think the injuries are much of an excuse. All of the players should be drilled in how we want to play, of course some are worse than others, but it's always just a mess.

How can you drill a player to play with his left foot? A right footed left back simply cannot play the same as a left footed left back.

Antony was actually quite critical in our good spell last season. As was Sancho actually. Now Antony has got all that private stuff going and Sancho is basically finished we cannot play with a right winger. Eriksen, Bruno, Mcsauce all drift centrally so you end up narrow. Couple that with Lindelof who also goes central because he isn't a LB and you are the easiest team to play against. Last season Martinez got suspended and was late back from world cup. Shaw deputies perfectly because he is left footed and Malacia can step in as left back. Having both of them out leaves us massively short. Regulion has played a mere 2 games so far.

Diallo had a good loan spell last season and was hoping he would break though. He was in ETH plans for pre season but alas he has been out since July after the game with Real Madrid. That leaves just Pellistri who is just too young/not good enough to be a constant starter.

Believe me ETH is not playing the formation or way he wants to play so is reverting to counterattack crap football with the players he has.

We aren't going to agree on this. I totally accept it plays a factor, but the performances are dreadful - all teams have injuries to deal with.

It's not that we suddenly struggle a bit, as any team would, the entire squad look dreadful, undrilled and totally unmotivated.

We obviously are not because you believe a team can still function without key playing positions.

It is like saying a car isn't winning races because all the tyres are missing but because we have lots of rolls of tape we can drill them to perform the same as tyres.

Please tell me what teams have 3 left backs injured, left sided centre back with no other options. We are also missing/suspended every right sided player we have bar Dalot really as Antony obviously has a lot going on but Diallo, AWB are both injured and Sancho is done. That's 6-8 players out depending on how you treat it. With no real alternatives.

I took the **** with Liverpool before mainly just to troll but looking back I can see exactly where they were coming from. It is easy to banter until it happens to yourself.

We simply have a lot of dross in the team, yet expect them to fight for silverware and at least top four.

Ten Hag has to shoulder a lot of the blame this season, he has bought players who simply haven't fit into any kind of system. What's the point in having Höjlund if you don't have any creativity that can provide him with assists? Mason Mount, as I said at the time we were linked with him, is an underwhelming signing.

Would replacing Ten Hag help, now? Probably not, there's a wider issus that needs resolving and that's our ability to do transfer business. Antony as a squad player wouldn't be as laughable, but we paid an extortionate amount for him.

There are things outside of his control though. The whole Sancho scenario for example. A player on £250k a week who hasn't lived up to expecation would be better keeping his opinions to himself, no other club unless he goes to Saudi are going to pay him that.

Antony was a panic buy but that is mainly a lack of focus from the club. ETH saw it as a quick easy thing as he was a known entity to him. We needed a wide right player who is left footed as he obviously had no faith in Sancho back then and goes against what he wants in his team's with inverted wingers. Antony would have never cost the money it did if it was planned properly.

I also understand the reasoning behind mount. It was clear last season that Eriksen couldn't play 40+ games a season and Bruno cannot do 50-60 himself so it seems like a logical choice. I am not a fan of mount but considering the torrid season the whole team is having it isn't correct to write him off straight away.

Of course it can still function? It's just less effective. It doesn't suddenly become a conference team.

There is still a decent amount of quality on the pitch. We've scored 1 more goal than Everton this season.

I am not saying I want ETH sacking - I don't think it matters at this point, but he shouldn't get a free ride because of injuries.
