Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4th - 6th January 2025]

Todays performance by Trent did make me think Bradley really should be getting more chances

I like many love a Trent for his attacking play but I’d be curious to see how Bradley delivers if given full string of games from an attacking perspective

I already believe he is a better defender for the defensive side

If nott forest can win next two games they will be 3 points off liverpool same games played
Title decider in 10 days.

Only team the close the gap on Liverpool over the last 6 games. Not sure why I'm hearing people online saying Liverpool are bottling it and Arsenal are closing in when Arsenal and Liverpool have exact same form over the last 6.

Amorim seems very angry in this post match interview! I think he's frustrated as you can see what the players are capable of today and they've been horribly short in the last few weeks.

It would do your head in. His job is fundamentally on the line and you can handle players being a bit **** or not doing quite as you ask but when they aren’t even working for you consistently then you are likely just going to suffer until you get the sack eventually.

You can’t do anything if players are that inconsistent.

I don't think the players aren't working. We're trying to play a new system with games every 3 days up until now. There was always going to be growing pains trying to do this mid season in the busiest part.

Yes and no. Regardless of training and system some players just haven't put the effort in. I was impressed today with the defensive work of Amad and Ugarte. They looked like they were busting a gut to get back when the ball was turned over. Apparently we outran Liverpool today which is how it needs to be. Garnacho needs to work like Amad does, Hojlund needs to work like Bruno does. We don't always see that effort level from them all. At the elite level 99% isn't enough.

It was the same under ETH, turning up in big games but not otherwise.

There is an amount of that but I imagine that if the manager is echoing this sentiment that he is seeing a lack of effort and application as well and he is best placed to see that. Its unlikely that a weeks training will have seen us go from zero to hero, especially against arguably the best form side in the world right now.

Amorim clearly understands that the players aren't going to magically be able to play his system which is completely different from previous managers but he also understands that a system cannot work without players working. That the best system in the world isn't going to beat good teams unless your players are putting in at least the same effort as your opposition.

There is always the learning curve though with anything new. You often pick something up quite quickly and act relatively intuitively as you are operating on a basic level. Once that is past however you sometimes regress as you have to fine tune you actions to keep progressing and that requires less intuition and more conscious thought before you can finally act on instinct.

Who knows. As always with United. Sometimes we turn 2 corners one after each other...

They bagged some wins against big teams when ETH was here too, different system

Yes and no. Under ETH we turned up in some big games (7-0 at Anfield anyone?) but usually struggled and scored on the break.

Under Amorim we try and at least control games, even if we aren't the better side. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't.

Do we all agree it wasn't the manager then? Some of us have been banging that drum for a while now

Absolutely not. ETH built this sub-par squad and failed miserably at coaching the players. Amorim is trying to clean up his mess.

As good a fight a United put up today, Pool were far, far from their best.

Can United kick on from this? And is this the demise of Liverpool? We live in hope/denial!!

OK fair I'll agree it was both, but I don't blame the poor players just on ETH, what was the scouting system doing etc.

My biggest issue with Ten Hag was that despite huge money being spent on a squad for him (and many of those players coming from Ajax) he never really looked like he had the team playing like he wanted. In the very short amount of time we have had Amorim he has shown that he can change our style and get players executing his tactics. I know that when you radically change the set up its easier to spot the changes but I don't think Ten Hag ever really had anyone saying "thats it, thats how we should be playing" outside of very very infrequent performances which appeared more chance than planning.

We will see how things pan out over the next few years (hopefully).
