Greenlizard0 Premier League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4th - 6th November 2023]

They should just make it a clear and obvious error and leave it at that.

Anything subjective should be left alone unless it is clear the ref has missed something or made an error. Would be far simpler then.

What’s clear and obvious though, there was at least 3 goals yesterday that weren’t clear and obvious as to whether or not they where on or off.

You’ve also got the issue with the Newcastle goal on Saturday - none of it was clear and obvious, they couldn’t get a conclusive answer and Arsenal have embarrassed themselves with statements and people kicking up about it.

What I meant was if the ref has made a clear and obvious error. If he hasn't then go with the refs initial on field decision.

I mean look at Garnacho's goal Vs Arsenal. He was single digit centimetres offside. If he was 10cm back it would have still been a goal as he was home free.

Maybe make the lines slightly thicker to give a bit of margin of error. Do the lines even take into account frame rate? VAR only runs at 50 FPS.

There’s no such thing as an orange card. It was a reckless off the ground 2 foot lunge with no control and both feet with studs showing.

It doesn’t matter if he won the ball either, if Sterling doesn’t see it coming he gets his leg snapped.

It’s basically the tackle that IFAB would use as an example of a red. It’s been outlawed for so long you barely see them in top flight football now.

Think you are getting players mixed up. Romero "orange" was for the petulant little kick like the Beckham one in the world cup that VAR deemed at the "high end of petulant". Udogie was the 2 footed studs up that should have been a red card.

So Ange's yellow was for stepping outside his technical area as he had an issue with the lineman when he didn't put his flag up when he thought a player was offside. Nothing to do with VAR.

Sleeping on it I'm still furious with Romero. He's never going to be world class unless he can control his emotions and I'm not sure he ever will, maybe he needs some professional help with that but he cost us the game. Udogie is young so I'll give him a pass. The real gutting thing is Micky van de Ven, he could be out months that looked so bad and he's been amazing in his first 11 games :( Paper thin squad that doesn't have a replacement for him.

It was brainless for sure! what an odd match to watch - can't remember feeling this way after reckless challenges and a big home defeat. I should be raging but I was throughly entertained. The pundits clearly did no homework on Ange's style of play, I said it before we were in for a hiding one week and to dominate the next, there is no in-between and to push Chelsea back with 9 players was frankly hilarious.

The mad thing is that it nearly worked. Spurs came very close to equalising with nine men. League position is very rarely decided on goal difference so losing 2-1 or 4-1 is fairly unimportant - especially when the fans are still 100% behind the team.

I'm confused by this. This is exactly what they theoretically do currently, so I don't understand what you're suggesting they change. And we can see what trouble it causes.

Personally I would rather that they use VAR to be as correct as possible. If the referee has made an error, it should be repaired, regardless of whether it is 'clear and obvious'. I want the right decision to be made.

There will still be errors made, of course. But we won't have this stupid situation where they know the decision is wrong, but it "isn't wrong enough".

This is my thinking as well. There’s also really stupid **** that they do. Like the Liverpool goal. They should be able to say “wait a minute, we’ve made a massive **** up” stop the game. Award the goal and crack on.

The supporters in the stadium NEED to know what’s going on as well.

I’d be happy if they just gave the adv to the attacking side every single time. If you can’t instantly tell it’s off by the naked eye. It’s adv and it’s a goal. Would take 5 seconds.

Yeah I was sat watching with two West Ham mates and by the end they were on the edge of their seats and couldn't believe we were still putting 4 or 5 players in the box at points with the defensive line well into their half. I honestly thought we might push it back but it just isn't the way he plays. Though I'd hope for a little more pragmatism against a team like City who would have put 10 past us if we tried that against them with 9 men and two slow CB. I think I might be wrong though.

I don't think it's going to be tamed now. The likes of Sky love it because it gives them 3 days of talking points afterwards. Too much time and money has been invested in Shockley Park and Howard Webb comes across as an absolute control freak who loves power and can talk his way out of anything, he ran rings around Neville and Carra

Doesn't help when they're saying clubs shouldn't be making statements and that officials need more protection.

It's all good, massive decisions that can cost clubs tens of millions come the end of the season, but please keep shtum and we'll try and do better next time.

I know I’m going to sound like an out-of-touch dinosaur but is this what football has been reduced to? Is a few extra million in the bank worth sucking all joy out of football?

I miss the spontaneous joy of celebrating a goal, without the fear of it being pulled back minutes later for something that no-one spotted with the naked eye.

It was off the back of the clear and obvious discussion. The thing is we've already seen there's some gray area as to what counts as clear and obvious.

VAR is never being scrapped entirely. The only hope is that things like offside decisions and the ball being out of play are called near enough immediately with better technology.

It does seem a bit ridiculous that with all the cameras they couldn't get a good view of the potential ball out of play in the Arsenal game. Do they only have VAR related cameras on one side of the pitch?

Mental that Arsenal forced them to do that with that stupid statement.

Hopefully that’s it over and done with and they get a brutal call against them on Saturday which results in Burnley winning. Karma, not only that it’ll be hilarious.

Although we know full well, Burnley probably get a legit goal ruled out and Arsenal win 1-0 with a dodgy call late on.
