Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread (and FA Cup) ** spoilers ** [17th - 21st March 2012]

Shame Chelsea couldn't hold out tonight, but I think City will drop more points in the coming weeks anyway. They've got Stoke and Arsenal away from home in the next few games and with their current away form I'd be surprised if they pick up full points from both those games.

You're grammar is the only joke.

Bale has been getting a lot of stick recently for drifting from the left. From tonifhts highlights I saw, Bale is the sole source of attacking threat from Spurs. The problem with this is in a 442, him drifting removes all width and it all goes to pot. If he sticks on the left he relies on Spurs working him in, which we are incapable of doing.
Bale should keep up his drifting but spurs should adopt a 4231 system like Man City. I don't think we would end up so pathetic with that adjustment.

bale's hit the bar two games in a row now. he's a fantastic player, just needs to alter a few things. lennon being out is a big loss as it unbalances us. VDV or kranjcar are no good out on the right.

spurs were a bit unlucky, we need a competent striker. the stats of that game were ridiculous for us to not score until the 93rd minute.

we are due a bit of luck, like arsenal and everton's dissallowed goal!

You have changed your tune, Wenger best manager in world? Going to win EPL next season.

I am like :( after tonight's results

Have i?? from what Cheets??..where have i changed my tune??. Ive never said Wenger is the best manager in the world and neither have i even said we will win the EPL next season although to be fair we have an infinitely better chance of winning the EPL than Wigan will ever have, seeing as you will probably be sat in the championship league next season:p...plus why your talking about next season is beyond me:confused:...we still got this season to finish then obviously the summer transfers will take place.

Im like :D every time Wigan lose or drop points:p

lol you are a "big" team but let me check wiki

Not won anything in what 7 seasons, that must feel good for a mighty established team from the capital, Arsenal compared to lowly Wigan competing with a Rugby League team :D

I just want to buy you a pie and have pint and show you that sport in Wigan, is sport and not hate, we love it oop north!

Going to Highbury for the Carling cup 2nd leg, that ground and the place was amazing never forget it, immucalte, gutted I never had the chance to have beer, whole trip down was just something to remember, mate driving down had a flat tyre near Stoke and took a wrong junction and ended up coming into London from the West, missed the first half and legged it from where we parked, just ran like mad and found the ground, stewards on the doors let us in and the rest is history!

Bale is dire when he drifts in, he is absolutely rapid and can cross and finish, he's perfect for the wing. When he drops inside he has no discipline, has no positional sense, can't pick a pass AND forces the team to play narrow because he's not out wide. Bale rates himself too much and thinks he can go wherever and do whatever he wants and it's incredibly frustrating to watch. He's a very good wide player; he should stay there.

I used to be of the same opinion until I saw the motd highlights (which may be an anomaly) last night. Bale created all our chances prior to the cross. He was the one playing the passes to put people into positive positions. The modric chance was from his ball.

So if he is actually bloody good drifting why do we hate him doing it? It is because if the system we are playing. 442 with one winger who is pretty good in a free role. It makes everyone scream "width" when we see bale on the ball in the centre and no outlet pass.

To deal with this change the system. Sandro and Parker as defensive midfielders with Sandro driving forward like toure. The front 4 of modric, bale, adebayor, lennon/vdv

It is so stupid to shove our most mobile player on the wing in a rigid system when he I'd more than capable of providing more inside and going to the wing when sensible. Just don't ask him to do it in a system that does not benefit from that.

Edit: the other GLARING problem that no one notices is that we have the shortest attacking element of any team. Aside from the fact that spurs don't attack the box well, who is bale aiming for? Lennon, modric,Parker, vdv, defoe. He and ad adebayor are our best threats in the air. When we are not counter attacking even exquisite crosses are not that useful. Vdv scored from a header yesterday but it is hardly expected and he is hardly prolific in the air is he?

At this stage now, if I was Liverpool I would just forget about the league. Champions league qualification has gone, only delusion would still think thats a realistic possibility. Europe League qualification is already assured from winning the Carling Cup anyway, so finishing in the other euro spots is irrelevant for that. What I would do now if I was in charge at Liverpool is just draw a line under the league for the remainder of the season, instead I would use the league matches to give run outs to the younger players and give them some first team experience, so I'd give starts to the likes of Coady, Sterling, Suso and so on. I'd play my best team in the FA Cup, to see if I could secure a 2nd trophy, but for the league matches now, I'd give those youngsters a spin for the final matches.
