Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread (and FA Cup) ** spoilers ** [17th - 21st March 2012]

I used to be of the same opinion until I saw the motd highlights (which may be an anomaly) last night. Bale created all our chances prior to the cross. He was the one playing the passes to put people into positive positions. The modric chance was from his ball.

So if he is actually bloody good drifting why do we hate him doing it? It is because if the system we are playing. 442 with one winger who is pretty good in a free role. It makes everyone scream "width" when we see bale on the ball in the centre and no outlet pass.

To deal with this change the system. Sandro and Parker as defensive midfielders with Sandro driving forward like toure. The front 4 of modric, bale, adebayor, lennon/vdv

It is so stupid to shove our most mobile player on the wing in a rigid system when he I'd more than capable of providing more inside and going to the wing when sensible. Just don't ask him to do it in a system that does not benefit from that.

Edit: the other GLARING problem that no one notices is that we have the shortest attacking element of any team. Aside from the fact that spurs don't attack the box well, who is bale aiming for? Lennon, modric,Parker, vdv, defoe. He and ad adebayor are our best threats in the air. When we are not counter attacking even exquisite crosses are not that useful. Vdv scored from a header yesterday but it is hardly expected and he is hardly prolific in the air is he?

Front four of Modric, 3 other people. Why do people insist on calling it a front four, and by doing so you made it unclear where you think Modric should be? He's slow and not particularly good on the wing, and MOTD is absolutely worthless for judging a player. If they want to they can show all the best or all the worst moments.

It's also a terrible argument to talk about crossing and height, firstly with Bales pace he should be looking to whip balls in ahead of strikers + defenders running towards the goal, with good striker movement the idea is to get to the ball ahead of the defender, on the ground, really high or anything inbetween is very winnable for any player of any height.

The problem is Bale does one of two things, spends ages trying to cut inside, then finally goes outside when its too late, goes outside, gets too close to the line and cuts it in right at the keeper.

His most successful games that I can remember involved getting passed in behind the right back, and driving towards goal with the option to shoot or square it, these days he drops deep, thinks he's Messi/Ronaldo and wants to take on the entire team.

IN football you've really got to think system first, NOT player, because Bale is completely all over the place, the other players never know where to go. A solid left winger who stays left wing and crosses in a predictable manner for the strikers is effective, when the strikers/midfielders have no clue when he's going to do anything they can't make runs. he's trying to win himself, and as soon as he's been trying to win himself, Spurs have been crap, its not a coincidence, likewise Ade, VDV, Modric, Parker, Lennon/Krancjar/whoever have all looked worse. When Spurs were winning Spurs were an 11 man team, since they've been crap they've been 10 + Bale. It's really easy to pick out a good highlights reel for Bale because he gets all the ball, every game, and wastes 95% of it at the moment.

While I don't particularly rate Ekotto, balls in behind the right back are made considerably easier when the guy you're passing in behind is that fast and powerful(put the same balls in for Modric and he'll not catch up with half of them, or be shouldered off the ball for many of the others), defensively he's looked so much worse in the past what 10 games because...... Bale is inconsistent because he's not always at left wing, Ekotto has less cover.

Bale wants to be Messi, and hasn't got a 1/10th of the talent required, and without carrying the entire team himself and scoring every game the negative side to playing like that, lack of tracking back and the like, will cost you most games. Hell even Messi predominantly stays in position on the right most games.

I have to agree, Bale rates himself so much, believes his own hype, so many times he takes the difficult option rather than just passing it simple or putting a ball in.

You're grammar is the only joke.

Also Kenny bringing of Suarez was the nod for QPR to come at us since we weren't going to be very threatening on the counter or if they had all stood on the side of the pitch and let us try score.

The problem isn't bringing Suarez off, it was bringing Carroll on. The squad has no depth and Carroll is worse than in my wildest nightmare. He's rubbish with the ball, can't pass, is easily knocked off the ball and doesn't score goals.

I just hope the club (Kenny included) are big enough to admit their mistakes in the transfer market. There's nothing more frustrating than a manager who's too stubborn to ship under performing players out. Everything suggest Kenny will stand by Carroll, Henderson and Adam until it costs him his job. Spearing should have never have got a place in the team either.

3rd  whodathunk

Hehe definitely after the season we have had ie the start i didnt think we would see 3rd let alone 4th. Am still a bit surprised by it all and how we have managed to turn it around after such an atrocious start to our season.

I suppose having RVP bagging goals left, right and centre has helped immensely and life without Fab isnt too bad. I just wonder if Wilshere was fit, how much better we could have been as we have definitely missed his play making ability. Arteta has been a decent buy for us considering he was a panic buy.

Anyhow i just hope we keep up our good run, hope the Chelsea and Spurs both keep drawing and losing games. Still a way to go as we have a few tough games coming up ie City away and Chelsea at home iirc. So i dont think for a second we have 3rd or 4th bagged but we are in a great position so far.

Cannot believe we threw the game away last night to QPR, but that's what happens when you think you have killed the game off and relax against a team battling for survival, they wont give up.

Wonder goal by Coates though.
