Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1 - 3rd December 2012]

Maybe it is a make or break season for Arsenal. If they get 4th, their rivals (like spurs) will lose key players to bigger clubs and will be able to keep 4th for the forseeable future. If Arsenal don't get CL football, their key rivals will get stronger and it will just get more difficult.

DM despite you not liking the current squad they key fact is that a fair few of the players are good when they are performing to their potential. Giroud, gervinho and mertesacker are poor, but much as in hate to say it, wilshere, carzola, podolski, arteta, sxhezny, sagna are all players who can perform at a high level.

I don't know where Frimpong is as he looked promising. Walcott can be effective, but shouldn't be a starter.

Its odd, because I can see why Arsenal supporters are angry but if there is CL football again at the end of the season, does hope not spring eternal?
Edit if Arsenal get 4th, I presume Pep Guardiola is interested in taking over

Arsenal has obviously gone backwards from the year of the invincibles. However so long as Arsenal can (and they have) stabilise at consistent CL qualification then you will be able to recruit top talent (even if it subsequetly moves on) repeatedly. Essentially there will always be a chance of kicking on from 4th with some good signings.

The hard thing is that Arsenal fans have extremely high ticket prices and are competing in a league with sugar daddies.

It hasn't been perfect execution but Wenger has kept Arsenal in a good position. The danger is failure to qualify for CL and the rot that would follow. That is my view from a non Gooner POV

Pretty much in that we are going backwards in terms of winning things. The simple fact is that the fans aren't just happy with CL qualification every yr and it's starting to show.

As much as I hate saying it, as I want Arsenal to win things...im hoping that we do not qualify for CL...it's the only way this ****ING Arsenal board and Wenger will do something about the mess we are in. Like I said we are going backwards in terms of success and seeing as we fans pay stupidly high prices for tickets. It's just not on and no longer can the board justify the high prices.

I'm just fed up of the way things are going, it's getting worse rather than better :/.

The highlights on MOTD of Arsenal's midfield was disgraceful, Arteta for some reason was pushed up holding the midfield three 5 yards into their half, pushing against their back 4, while their midfield was 15 yards inside our half, they passed once and our entire midfield and attack was miles behind the play.

They are all playing like idiots, attracted to the ball, not marking the space. Mark the space and they can't pass, try and mark the men, you leave the passes wide open and get torn to pieces and thats what they did. Defensively the first goal was just that, and Mertesacker has done that since he joined, he has zero pace, so steps up and can't recover due to no pace, but he misses the ball almost every single time he steps up... he's worthless.

Snax, we have SOME good players, I don't deny that, but you can't win a title with 11 good players, and we don't have 11 title capable players, you need 18 top players, minimum, and you realistically need a LOT more than that to play in the CL, domestic cups and maintain a title run. We're mostly a great coach and someone actually teaching us a system to defend that works, away from a passable first eleven, Sagna IS rubbish. The kinda crap he did midweek or last week, forget which, terrible pass, terrible clearance led to the goal, he's done that for 3 years, terrible clearances, he's lazy, he's crap going forwards, he's poor defensively.

The thing is, invincibles year we had a first eleven that was unmatched for me, and a second eleven that was really ruddy good, a second eleven that could alone easily come top half of the table. Now we can't put out an eleven that can win anything, when we get to needing back up, resting players, covering injuries..... lol.

One of the biggest issues in the past 8 years was even when we had a capable eleven, Wenger wouldn't play it, but when a few of them were injured, it was falling back on Denilson, Song, Diaby, Hoyte, Djourou. 3 terrible players put into an otherwise top side can basically kill any team.

AS of today, our best eleven, ignoring injuries and everything else, the very best team we can put out, isn't good enough to realistically beat City, Utd, Barca, any top team, not even really be competitive, let alone a team riddled with injuries and tired players and using a mix of first team and rotation/squad players. We need 3-4 players minimum to get a good first eleven, and then we need basically another 10 back up players to be improved to make a really good squad. 4 years ago, this was 3-4 players... full stop.

I have no worries about bringing people in, there are 10 "Michu's" every single year, a great manager will find plenty of top cheap players, Kompany cost £5mil, its getting rid of people to bring in new players that is the problem, and there Arsenal are screwed. Who is going to offer Gervinho 60k+ a week to persuade him to move, no one is the answer. Someone seems to be offering Walcott a way out, and we're trying to stop him leaving :(

How was that a dive from bale? Theatrical yes, a dive, no

Neither of them were dives, I don't think it was theatrical either, if someone clips you foot like that, it will kick your leg up, thats just how we work, when you go down, it looks stupid, when you can go down easily and non theatrically.... its usually because you're in complete control. Its when you go down looking like a mentalist that you aren't in control because it wasn't a dive.

Bale did in neither case anything but go after the ball, Suarez will run into a player to create contact and does it frequently. Bale has dived, so have loads of players, yellow cards as proof someone is or isn't a diver, is just stupid because we all bemoan terrible ref decisions EVERy week.... yet when we want to make a point its based on something we decide a ref has gotten right? Bale's dived, and deserved yellows for it before, neither of those were.

You must be fairly annoyed, that goes on all the time and much worse and isn't given a pen

Well against Arsenal there was a worse pull on Pienaar by Arteta running into the box with the ball and that wasn't given. Thing is pulling and shoving goes on in the box all the time... there's so much inconsistency with refs and stuff that goes on in the box, it's very weird. Like next weekend Probert will probably miss something 5 times worse than a tuck of the arm, like a defender or attacker bear hugging their opposition. :D

I worry for Bale; I think he is a good role model for kids yet if the media start getting after him it could crush him and the way he plays. He gets little protection anyway but to be on the end of crunching challenges that stop him playing could turn him into a very jaded player who complains to the ref all the time.

On Arsenal, so long ad Wenger stays away from the French league the dross will start to disappear. Hazard has gone off the boil big time and gervinho is like a championship player! Maybe Wenger will go over to Spain more; he has just seen what a team full of Spanish players can do to his French boys.

You can push and shove as much as you want while the ball is dead. The trick is to calm down as the ball is kicked.

Next time someone takes a corner, look at the ref before the ball is kicked. He's basically telling the players to calm down then the ball is kicked and it all goes (relatively) quiet. It's like a form of trolling :D

Was a harsh decision.
