Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [10th - 11th January 2015]

0-1 FT

Tale of two halfs. First half we saw a balanced team with players playing in their best positions and we dominated as a result. Second half Rodgers rearranged half of the team just to accommodate his boyfriend and we absolutely stank. Our best player in the first half couldn't get in to the game at all, Can looked lost playing as a wingback, Borini became completely isolated and it was hard to tell who had the man advantage

3 points but we were lucky to be facing a team as poor as Sunderland.

Markovic MotM but Lucas had a very good game as well. Unless we've got a DM lined up Rodgers needs his head examined if he's considering selling him.

We've actually started well. No idea what Chelsea are up to, but we need to make this count.

Yup, I always hate that, Oscar has screwed up almost every single touch all game long, I'd say him or WIllian were the worst player on the pitch(again), and he gets the goal. Often happens, feels so undeserved when that happens.... and it's usually Walcott :p

Chelsea have been poor all over, defensively, offensively, Matic hasn't imposed himself on the game at all defensively which is very very rare for him.

Poor 2nd half performance mainly down to the substitution. First half the Can, Markovic, Gerrard right hand side were linking up seamlessly and we looked like creating something every time we went forward. 2nd half was anything but seamless. I don't want to be too hard on Lovren because playing in a 3 man defence is a lot different to a back 4 but he looked all at sea. There was no understanding between him and Markovic to begin with and then when we swapped Markovic and Can it wasn't much better either. Unlike Pigeon I didn't think the midfield pair were good enough 2nd half - once they went down to 10 men we looked less in control than when they had 11 (much like Leicester away earlier in the season) and as the half went on we were crying out for somebody to put their foot on the ball and take the sting out of the game.

Not sure what to make of their red card. I don't think there can be too many complaints about the 2nd yellow as he's clearly running across Can's path to impede him. The first was unfortunate because it was clearly accidental however you can't say it was a surprise that he was booked. The problem the ref had was the lack of consistency - twice O'Shea got caught wrong side of our forwards and just grabbed them around the waist to stop them and both times was let off.

Markovic was the obvious motm. He's looking better and better with each game and it was good to see him get his goal today after a couple of easy misses in the last few games. Can too impressed. Although I hope to see him in midfield going forward, he adds a great balance to our backline when we go with a 3 man defence.

What do you make of Coutinho BaZ? Behind a front 3 firing on all cylinders his vision and ability on the ball was a perfect match last season but without that we need goals from midfield and I'm beginning to find it difficult to ignore his finishing.

Lallana started to look very good before getting injured and does offer more of a goal threat and could play in that role, as could Sterling, but I'm not sure if I could drop Coutinho.

Rodgers will certainly have a tough decision to make once they're all fit because we've got a lot of similar players.

Edit: As for the midfield in the second half, Henderson certainly looked a bit too eager to please once he got the armband. Ran after every ball and got stuck in a bit too much without holding his position and doing the job he was supposed to do.

Agree 100% about his goals and finishing. He's got to take the next step and go from being a very good player to a great player.

I think in the system we're playing him and Lallana are key and are perfect for. Their intelligence, movement and interplay is what's been causing teams so many problems.

Obviously it's rare that you'll have all your players available (Sturridge comes back as Lallana gets injured for example) but if and when that happens I wouldn't be surprised to see Sterling used as a wingback like Markovic. Rodgers has done it a few times before with him and in one respect it's possible easier for him to influence the game with his pace and dribbling there than off the front.

One thing's for sure, it's a nice problem to have. If only we had the depth of quality in the centre forward position.
