Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12 - 16th January 2013]

Can you really count Bale......after he faught and faught to be kept as a full back , until giving up the ghost and becoming a fantastic wide player?:)

Bridge was never that good - quality squad player, but sadly never really top drawer

Its also a little unfortunate that Southampton were a little behind in the developmnt arc for both players at the time and therefore didnt get the money the players were worth at their peak (or possibly will be worth in Bale's case)

Lol I was thinking that as well but I like to look it as a positive that he's been quality either way...

Bridge was good enough for the perm, just failed with the being English here's a massive wage thing, shame but it was his ego that mucked it up not lack of talent...

To be honest most the players sold saved the club from administration for another couple of years one way or another. Only AOC has been sold when we have been financially secure and that was because his dad and Wenger filled his head of Arsenal will develop you better (aka get him England caps, big wage but less football in a side that plays worse). Bale saved us nearly 5 years ago when we sold the sell on clause (and took on tommy forecast, who is hardly a professional keeper...) to keep afloat for another 6 months, Theo did the same in the champ, it sort of goes on like that sadly.

Excited its no longer the case though :D

I had forgotten about the administration fight - fair point

Im originally from around the Southampton area, so Ive always had a soft spot for them - and even been to both stadium's occasionally.

We built a team around him as an attacking left back when he was seventeen, he was the outstanding player in our lineup at the time so definitely a left back for me. Just because he's now playing and performing at left wing dowsn't mean he wouldn't still be a world class left back!

Bridge was never that good - quality squad player, but sadly never really top drawer

Bridge at his best was a quality player and considered good enough to challenge Cole for the England shirt he certainly didn't look bad value when Chelsea splashed out 7 million quid for him (which we got all of as he used to be a decent chap and handed in a transfer request so waived any percentage) and he had a solid first season in London. It was the bizare decision to sign Cole that ruined his career combined with him being happy to take the pay packet and not play, by the time he joined city he was already washed up and no sadly he is a shadow of the player we saw all those years ago in red and white stripes.

Its also a little unfortunate that Southampton were a little behind in the developmnt arc for both players at the time and therefore didnt get the money the players were worth at their peak (or possibly will be worth in Bale's case)

I think we got full value for Bridge 7 million and Grame Le Saux as a ready made replacement don't think you could ask much more for a young left back at the time! Bale we were unlucky the full deal was over 10 million with addons that we would surely have got but we cashed those in for peanuts and a crap keeper while we were falling into admin. Bale was never going to stay with a finacially screwed club outside the prem who were going nowhere!

Seeing Bale play when he was in his first season with us was incredible I couldn't believe how good he was or that we had managed to build a team around him as our most potent attacking threat! reminded me of Walcotts early time at the club I was staggered when I first saw him his touch and pace were unbelievable and his confidence ridiculous.

.

Apart from I think nearly EVERY game Spurs played him as a left back they didnt win, so yes I think thats pretty much a damning statistic for Bale in that position lol

No it's a daft footballing myth

Not that daft

wiki:

After playing a record 24 Premier League games for Spurs without being on the winning side,[34][35] Bale's first ever involvement in a Premier League victory came against Burnley on 26 September 2009 – more than two years after signing for Spurs – when he came on as an 85th minute substitute.[36]

Unfortunately wiki doesnt actually say (or I couldnt find it) when Harry stopped playing him as a full back

edit - just didnt look far enough - according to wiki (reading between the lines) he had a successful 09/10 season at full back before moving forward for the 10/11 season - have to admit thought it was before that , but happy to take that as described.

Yes it is;

1- how many of those games did he start?
2- how many of those games did he play at LB?
3- how many of those games was his involvement directly responsible for a goal against?

It's one of those stupid stats that people like drag up because on the face of things is pretty damning.

I know for a fact that that away to Man Utd & Fulham and at home to Arsenal were 3 of Bales first competitive games for Spurs, he played left wing with Lee behind him at LB in all 3, Bale scored in the latter two but Spurs failed to win any of the 3 (for what it's worth Bale only then made a further 9 more appearances that season 07/08)

Bale's 'winless' record in a Spurs shirt was nothing else but coincidental, nothing to do with him playing at LB because as I've said at least 3 of those games he played on the wing

EDIT: If fact just because I'm so sick of hearing about this I'm going to put an end to it right now...

07/08
v Man Utd (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 1-0
v Fulham (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs drew 3-3 (Bale scored 1 for Spurs)
v Arsenal (h) - Played 69 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 1-3 (Bale scored Spurs only goal)
v Aston Villa (h) - Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs drew 4-4
v Liverpool (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs drew 2-2
v Newcastle (a) - Played 19 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 3-1
v West Ham (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs drew 1-1
v Birmingham (h) - Played 75 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 2-3 (winning goal came after Bale had been subbed)

08/09
v Middlesbrough (a) - Came on after 65 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 2-1
v Sunderland (h) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 1-2
v Chelsea (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs drew 1-1
v Aston Villa (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 1-2
v Wigan (h) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs drew 0-0
v Hull (h) - Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 0-1
v Stoke (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 2-1
v Arsenal (a) - Played 55 minutes, played LW, Spurs drew 4-4
v Fulham (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 2-1
v Everton (h) - Came on after 68 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 0-1 (winning goal came before Bale came on)
v West Brom (a) - Came on after 75 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 2-0
v Wigan (a), Played 90 minutes, played LB, Spurs lost 1-0
v Portsmouth (h), Played 68 minutes, played LB, Spurs drew 1-1
v Man Utd (a), Came on after 86 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 5-2 (all 5 goals came before Bale came on)
v Everton (a) - Played 90 minutes, played LW, Spurs drew 0-0
v Liverpool (a) - Played 78 minutes, played LW, Spurs lost 3-1

So that's it, those are the 24 games Bale was involved in when Spurs failed to win, 10 games he played at LB (less than half) in 1 of those 10 the winning goal came before Bale even came on, of the remaining 9 games after that 3 of which were draws, and of the remaining 6 games after that the winning goal in 1 came after Bale had been subbed, so there you go in total 5 games in which Bale played LB for 90 minutes and Spurs lost.

Sounds more and more like the Emirates evey day :p

Serious note, do they think it helps the team? Or do the chelsea boys just not care?

I actually think there are two types of boos. One follows real support during the match and is directed at no one in particular. I don't think this has a particularly detrimental effect as at the end of a poor performance, players will be just as peeved. Supporters also have a right to express themselves.

The second type of booing is targeted. Normally this is against opposition players, in Chelsea's case it started with the manager, then torres got a really rough ride and finally ramires. I think this is hugely damaging coming from the home support. The players in question visibly slump and lose confidence during the bloody match and the other players get twitchy that it is going to happen to them. The only player who seems to deal with it well was Luiz.

I can see why Chelsea fans are booing but Torres has done nothing wrong other than play less than his price tag. That is a problem for Abramovich not the fans. The whole thing is based joke and costing them points.

I heartily approve and strongly encourage the Chelsea contingent to really make their voice heard during PL home games :D

Tom, that is far too much effort to put into an argument with Frank :p

Meh it was gone midnight what else was I gonna do? Sleep? :p

It has been something I've wanted to look into for quite some time now anyway and once I found a site that listed every appearance Bale made in those 2 seasons that rest was easy :)

And I would have gotten away with it if wasn't for those meddling kids!

(Sorry, that's just where your post appeared to be going) :p

Booing your own team is retarded, it makes me cringe when it happens at Old Trafford.

I don't have a problem with a general boo at the end of the game if the performance has been particularly inept we as fans should be entitled to show our disapointment, for example I felt fully entitled to give the saints a boo at the final whistle when we lost 4-0 at Sheffield Wednesday a few years back after one of the most disinterested passion lacking performances I'e ever seen. I'd supported the team throughout the 90 minutes even though they could have played 900 and not scored but once the whistle has gone they need to know we the fans didn't appreciate it!

The booing of individuals is cringeworthy but I can sort of understand why they did it.
Interim got booed as taking Lampard off was a stupid decision, he was having a better game than Oscar for instance and is more likely to get you a goal and that's what we needed.
Torres is getting booed now not because he's not playing well, it's his attitude. Fans at every club don't really mind when players have bad games or spells (his support for the first 18 months was phenomenal considering how bad he was) but now he doesn't even try. If he were to throw himself about a bit and give 100% people would lay off him as they know he can't actually play anymore, he hasn't got an ounce of guts in him.
The whole team got booed as the last few home games have been completely soulless performances with no signs of a desire to win. Fans again can accept defeats and stupid draws if they get beat whilst giving their all and that hasn't happened v QPR, Swansea & Southampton.
If Interim took the Chelsea job hoping to enhance his CV he's not doing a very good job of it, he hasn't got an ounce of passion in him and that's being reflected on the pitch.
Kevin Keegan would do a better job with this squad.

Well I was unsure whether it was 3 or 5 times you had to say his name for him to appear so thought I'd better stop now just to be safe.
