Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [12th - 15th December 2014]

Just seen that Lampard scored his 175th premier league goal yesterday, thats the same as Henry. I know he's played a lot more games but thats crazy for a midfielder.

Hope this is a sick joke but the rumours are that Mignolet has indeed been dropped, we're playing three at the back with Johnson playing as a centre back, Gerrard and Allen partner each other in the centre of midfield and Lucas has been dropped and Sterling's playing upfront on his own.

-------------Jones----------------
----Johnson--Skrtel--Lovren----
-Hendo-Gerrard-Allen-Moreno-
--------Lallana-Coutinho--------
-------------Sterling-------------

3 clowns with no pace at the back, a team full of midgets that won't help us defend set pieces...

Edit: Of course, moving Moreno back alongside Johnson, Skrtel and Lovren, playing a 3 man midfield of Henderson, Gerrard and Allen with Coutinho, Lallana and Sterling upfront is also possible and makes way more sense but then this is Rodgers post mental breakdown. Would still be mental to drop Toure and Lucas though.

It's no surprise they replaced him with Fabregas, a very similar player. I think the main difference between them is Lampard had better defensive midfielders behind him for most of his career so gets in the box more and shoots a lot more. Fabregas often sits much deeper and had a more defensive role so has become an assister more than a scorer but when played further forward his finishing is just as good.

Likewise when Lampard is asked to defend he's very good at it, champs/europa league wins he did an incredible defensive job with a weaker DM next to him and got forward less.

Lampard is one of the best players the prem league has had, brilliant player with great vision, great passing, great technique, great discipline and ridiculous record.

Gerrard is lucky in that throughout his time at Liverpool they haven't been successful nor had a huge number of top players at any one time so he's always been big fish in a little pond. Lampard for me is a significantly better player offensively and defensively with a much better scoring record but is rated less in England because he's a big fish in a god damned enormous ocean so he sticks out less.

How many midfielders at 34 have a season with 21 league starts and 15 goals from only 80 shots. Just a hair over 1 goal in every 5 shots is striker like scoring rate.

3-1 down in penalties in the champs league final, huge pressure, miss that and Bayern are 99.9999% going to win it, buries it, go on to win.

One of the only midfielders to score over 20 goals in the league, 22 goals, and he was 30-31 when he did it and got 14 assists to go with them. Consistently scoring 10 + goals a year in the league probably averaged somewhere around 14-15 in the league every year. Also like Xavi was playing 55-70 games a year for most of his time at Chelsea. A machine in terms of appearances, one of the best goal scoring midfielders in any league, brilliant player.

if rodgers drops mignolet then he has lost the plot. jones is gash and what's his reasoning (rodgers) going to be if/when jones has a mare and mignolet is back next week?

This will be interesting, the thing is van Gaal doesn't care and will change his side in a split second so if Rodgers is planning a 5 or a 3 with wing backs so you can't really surprise him.

Liverpool will surely raise their game for today, so not massively confident, although we should be winning without too much trouble.

Shame there's no Di Maria.

Quite a lot of journalists seem to think Wilson is starting up front with RvP, Rooney behind.

Quite possibly the worst team is he could with, suppose he wants the sack and this is the best way to go about it

LFC XI: Jones, Skrtel, Lovren, Johnson, Moreno, Henderson, Allen, Gerrard, Coutinho, Lallana, Sterling.

Subs: Mignolet, Toure, Lambert, Lucas, Can, Balotelli, Markovic.

United XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Evans, Young, Carrick, Fellaini, Mata, Rooney, van Persie, Wilson.

Subs: Lindegaard, McNair, Blackett, Herrera, Fletcher, Januzaj, Falcao

The thing is why drop Mignolet now? He was abysmal for months yet started to look half decent again recently so he's been rewarded with that improvement in form by getting dumped. Lovren, on the other hand, did get dropped and now comes straight back in to the team after Toure helped to make the entire defense look more solid. Same with Lucas, plays well gets dropped. If Jones plays a blinder will he get dropped for Mignolet again?

The message Rodgers is sending out to the players at the moment is completely wrong imo, form seems to be completely irrelevant to him.

Just hope for his, the teams and the fans sake he isn't playing 3-4-2-1.

I'm hoping they both make untold mistakes but also have some flair mixed in, Should make for a good game to watch.

Or there's the fact that he dumped the ball at a Basel player's feet the other night and is unfortunately a walking mistake. Jones might not be better, but surely deserves a shot...

Falcau 48 million & he's on the bench replaced by a 19 year old, What the **** :p

Surprised to see Wilson starting, my guess would be Falcao will come on second half. Also not too sure about Fellaini either he is too inconsistent one game you think cool he's scored then the next he goes back to his usual self of losing the ball and not providing much else.

Or the pass to cambiaso

I can see why he's dropped but impressively the backup is worse

I doubt there's a keeper in the league, starter or backup, with a higher serious mistakes to games ratio than Mig. It's quite incredible, and costs us too many points.

For me, you shouldn't notice an average goalie. Excellent ones or poor ones are obvious, and at the moment Mig is the latter. If the game goes by without Jones getting a mention, he's an improvement.
