Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 15th August 2011]

I have zero faith we'll even be able to beat Udinese. Or win any of our league fixtures over the next few weeks unless we make some proper signings with the money from Cesc and Nasri. How depressing do things feel after just one game? The away fans were doing the 'spend some money' chant again today, I imagine our first Emirates fixture is going to have a very negative atmosphere. Boos after your first home game of the season!? I'd probably put money on it.

Hope Song gets a nice long ban, he's **** and swaggers about like he thinks he owns his place in midfield, when really all he does is foul, get caught out too far up the pitch and generally not do the job he's supposed to. Hopefully he can sod off to the ACN and not come back. Sick of ****, lazy or unproductive players wasting space on the pitch or bench and being given games even though any other manager would drop them.

I couldn't be arsed to watch most of MOTD, didn't watch Arsenal but I'm assuming Wenger's response was delusional, again, and that maybe after 5 years people are finally working out he's lost the god damned plot?

As I've been saying for who knows how long, its not that he won't spend, its not that he won't replace certain people, its not that he won't "fix" the defence or switch formation........ he can't recognise we need any of that. He thinks he's getting it all right and its just a bit of bad luck in every game we've played in years.

The Suarez thing, probably the main reason it wasn't a red was Suarez's impressive swan dive addition. I really really can't tell from the angle if there was enough of a clip to actually knock one leg into the other, or if he did the rather classic kick back of other leg and swan dive method of trying to win a penalty when someones close. I think its a bit of both and Suarez is a known diver.

I think Gervinho made it look worse than it was, and I think Suarez did the same. Its also ridiculous to suggest the keeper couldn't have saved it, he was scrambling sideways pretty well, he didn't come out and dive forwards which would have commited him in the wrong direction, he came out but had gone sideways, he had an arm out and plenty of keepers scramble on all fours further and that angle was only getting worse for Suarez, had there been no contact Richardson would have got to the line likely before a shot, stopped it, who knows. It wasn't cut and dry, and this is all ignoring the "block" on the halfway line that seems to hit Suarez's arm in the first place, absolutely not on purpose, but an accidental handball leading to a goal would be equally as unfair.

Dowd would never make the same decision against a United player. Lets face it. Would be instant red.

I've contemplated bringing this up before but wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt as you're a fellow red, but you're constant paranoia has become really boring. There are **** officials, there are **** journalists and whatever other group you've implied has an agenda against us (or for Utd in this case) but they're just that, there's no agenda.

The world isn't against us Alpherah, really. Please give it a rest.

The sad thing is our (Arsenal) defence was quite good today :o

The only loose link we have is Squilacci, but even then he wasn't that bad. If he could reclaim some of his past glory he would be a decent back up. Miquel is the Spanish U21 captain or something. Rather good player.

Brighton looked good again, it's nice to see that they are continuing to attack teams and play the football they did last season. I was slightly worried that they might change their style as sometimes when tems step up a league and continue playing the same way that got them promoted they look naive and get a few hidings.

Nice to see Craig Mackail-Smith getting his first goal as well. He will cause lots of problems for defences this season, he is very lively and never stops running.
Also, another good performance by Craig no one who will create many goals this season.

Can't wait for the Peterborough game on 27th, which will be my first game at the Amex. For once, it is a good time to be a Brighton suporter. I don't know if anyone here ever went, but the Withdean was an embarasment of a football league ground, and we have been embarrased for over 10 years, it is a fantastic feeling to finally actually have a stadium, and a stadium that looks vey nice too!!

My bet of Brighton to win the league looks safe:cool:

Who can see lots of clean sheets this season, and nothing at the other end. 1-0 to the Arsenal :p!

A few further thoughts on the Liverpool game (aside from the decisions).

First and foremost our lack of a proper pre-season really showed in our 2nd half performance today. A lot was spoke about our results in pre-season but that wasn't a concern for me, what I was concerned with was the lack of playing time too many players had (for various reasons) and that we'd be under prepared. We looked a tired side in the 2nd half and the difference in performance between first and second half was like night and day.

Even in the first half I thought Lucas looked off the pace and while we were attacking well, we never really had complete control of the midfield. Maybe we'd have been better starting Spearing ahead of him but it would have been a big call to make. I also thought that when Henderson came off we would have been better bringing on Meireles rather than Kuyt. The game had got very scrappy and we could have done a bit more composure on the ball, which Meireles could have offered.

Aside from the general tired/scrappy performance in the 2nd half, I though Flanagan had a shocker. Got caught out for the goal and had a generally poor game. While he's the 1 youngster that's established himself the most in the side (excluding Kelly and Spearing as they're a bit older and been around a while now), he's the 1 I think will end up being the next Steve Warnock. A good tryer(sp) that the fans will love for his committment and tough tackling but ultimately not good enough for Liverpool. Unless Kelly wasn't 100% fit then I have no idea why Flanagan started today.

On the plus side, I thought Enrique had an excellent game and for the most part I thought both Downing and Carroll looked very good too.

TLDR version
No the world's not against us, I'm just not interested in pointing out drama/bad decisions/whatever you want to call it involving other teams because, quite frankly, i couldn't' care less about any team but my own.

Slightly longer version
No the worlds not against us, but seemingly the football world is extra-pro-United.
Maybe its down to rivalry making it seem worse then it is, but i spend all day every day surrounded by WBA, Wolves, AV and Brum City fans (and one silly Gooner) and all i hear from them every other week is how United in x match ended up with the rub of the green again, so I'm not the only one who feels it, and neither is it just Liverpool fans who feel it apparently.

That said, re: reporters, your right they all talk a lot of crap. Its beyond belief that pretty much all our ex players (PT aside) constantly put in the boot weather we did good or bad through the GH and RB era's. The way the mood changed once Roy took over suggests to me its more of a nationality problem rather then anti-club-sky-driven-agenda. I can't decide which would annoy me the most though! :p

Then onto incompetence. Im sure the 'nothing to see here, move along' brigade are happy to put it down to incompetence but I'm not convinced.
The amount of dodgy.. sorry i mean bad, decisions has been steadily going up since the $$$$ rolled into the sport and its hard to accept as being coincidence.

You have ex ref's, players, managers admitting to bribing/accepting bribes in the 70s and 80s in European competition (which even then was quite a cash cow, although nothing compared to today obviously).

We have modern day proof of corruption in Football in Spain, Russia, Turkey, Italy, Germany, Argentina.

We have corruption in FIFA and i suspect there's been brown envelope deals being done at UEFA as well.

There's evidence everywhere you look that money breeds corruption, its even in our own Media and Politics.

So forgive me if I'm a bit tin-foil-hatted when it comes to the topic of fair play in football, don't get me wrong, its just as bad for everyone else, but i don't support everyone else so I'm not going to care enough to post about it on a regular basis.

Our pre-season was a bit of a joke. Wasted too much game time putting players in the shop window but had to be done i guess. Didn't help today though.

Even in the first half I thought Lucas looked off the pace and while we were attacking well, we never really had complete control of the midfield. Maybe we'd have been better starting Spearing ahead of him but it would have been a big call to make. Agree re: Lucas.
We never had control of midfield, in general we seem to struggle with a 2 man midfield, but it has to be done to get the best out of Carroll .. just not sure its worth it at the moment. We played so well 4-2-3-1 / 4-3-3 last season after Kenny came back i don't see the sense in throwing it all out the window because we have to play 2 wide men for a mis-firing Nr 9.

Aside from the general tired/scrappy performance in the 2nd half, I though Flanagan had a shocker. Got caught out for the goal and had a generally poor game. Also agree, although Kelly was on the bench wasn't he? it was obvious fairly early that Flanno was really struggling, surely Kelly could have come on at Half time?

On the plus side, I thought Enrique had an excellent game and for the most part I thought both Downing and Carroll looked very good too.
Disagree on Carroll, agree with the other 2 though. Enrique won 100% vs opponents 1v1 in the air and ground according to Opta.

Brighton won't win the league... Thats Saints job this time round :p

In fairness Brighton made Pompy look terrible, though they are doing that by them selves a bit too, but Brighton should be looking good this season. Am looking forward to the trip to the Amex too, didn't bother with the Withdean had to be the guy on the net for a mate who went the last 2 years instead

You are witnessing something very rarely seen in the history of football..... A happy and optimistic Brighton fan!

Brighton and Southamton in 1st and 2nd atm. Is it too early to be thinking about trips to Anfield and Old Trafford?:D

We've got some big games this season. Pompey, Soton, Palace. The feeling around the place is a thousand times better than i have seen it in my lifetime. Gus Poyet gets the money and the freedom to do whatever he wants really and we play great stuff too. I think a top 10 finish is easily in our reach and with the rub of the green we could get to the play-offs

A mate of mine who supports Blackburn said to me the other day "I wouldn't be suprised if they are playing eachother in the league next season" to which i replied "i hope not":p

Welcome to the world of optimism! I can't get over the feeling either, first time in a very long time we've had a sensible manager and chairman who know what they are doing and I really think top 10 is a min for us (and for Brighton too really). For the first time in a very long time we've come up as a team that will expose the general mess that are most the champ teams.

Pomp for what its worth are the other end of the spectrum and should go down this season, trading on players reputations rather than ability. So (other than the rivalry) I don't see them as big tests. The ones that matter with be Ipswich, Leicester, West Ham, Cardiff, Brighton (of course) and probably Brum too. Good results in any of those games = good season :)

Promotion would be amazing, though probably a club killer as well (prem wages are a lot just to stay up) but dreaming is nice for right now as the table does look amazing!

Pretty terrible from us today, Song should be retrospectively punished, the Gervinho sending off was fair, but only for the slap to the face. There was 100% contact and it should have been a penalty, but of course Barton manhandled Gervinho, got in his face and Gerv gave him a slap for his troubles. Both of them should have seen red and I'd like to see Song get a ban as well for that ridiculous stamp. I didn't even bother processing what Wenger said in the post-match interview, I've lost all faith in him after the way he's handled this summer and unless we have a good season then it's time for him to go.
