Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 15th August 2011]

Whether Barton dived or not is irrelevant to Gervinho's sending off, sure it was a **** thing to do but Gervinho was an idiot and was rightly sent off for striking another player.

Except for the fact there was contact, yeah.

Yeah, sorry, i didnt mean in this case i just meant generally speaking.

If there is contact in the penalty area i have no issue with a player going down.

If another player raises his hands i have no problem with the other player going down.

However if there is no contact in either case then that is when i would say it is cheating.

Are you saying that Gervinho didn't make contact with Barton's face?

At the end of the day, I feel that the referee got it right.

You have no problem with diving? Sorry but thats just retarded, he wasn't highlighting anything, he was trying to make the contact look worse nothing more or less.

Gervinho, even if he did try and make the contact for the penalty look worse, I really can't tell, did it in the spur of the moment, an impulse. Barton both, grabbed someone with a few seconds gap, continued to hold on to him, took barely a tap to the face, waited a second then chose to dive, then he chose to go around to the ref, to RVP, to a bunch of other players and LIE that he had taken a bad punch to the face.

IF you consider Gervinho cheated, he did it once, he was than assaulted and reacted, he shouldn't have but Barton was not letting him go either, don't forget Barton grabbed him, in a VERY agressive manor and continued to do so, he didn't release him, this was in no way an unprovoked slap. Barton cheated, then cheated, again, then cheated again and continued to lie and cheat and behave unprofessionally. We're talking minutes later he's still telling people Gervinho punched him hard, then he goes on after the game, and on twitter, still lying and cheating.

To say you can understand Barton going down is truly pathetic.

There is actually a point where I've always wondered, should a player always be sent off for hitting someone. In every other part of society self defence is completely fine, if someone tries to kill you, you can kill them and be deemed to have done nothing wrong, thats fine.

If someone on the pitch repeatedly punched you, and you punched them to stop them, you would get a red card aswell, I've thought that in itself is madness for a long while now. Should Gervinho be red carded if he did that unprovoked for no reason, yes, should he get a red card for Barton grabbing him and refusing to release him? By the rules as they stand, yes, but should the rules be like that, why is self defence not taken into account in any way?

If you raise your hands to another player it is a red card.

That is the top and bottom of the situation.

We can debate the rights and wrongs of where the law lies but as it stands thats it. If you raise your hand and strike an opponent its a red card offence.

EVERYTHING that surrounds that is irrelevant whether you like it or not.

Barton hitting the deck is poor but it does not negate the fact that if the Arsenal player hadnt committed the initial foul he would have no reason to go down.

The referees job isnt to make a moral judgement on a player, his job is to decide whether contact was made.

For the record i am neither retarded or pathetic and id suggest you choose your words more carefully in future. I object to you using such words and given your reputation on here you are ill-placed to use them to describe other posters.

I was at the match yesterday and in my opinion the ref got the incident spot on. Arsenal were diving constantly yesterday so if there was contact (it did look like a dive from where I was and it was right in front on were I was sitting) which people have said there was Tiote still won the ball and Gervinho still wanted the penalty.

Barton grabbed him by the CHEST which by the F.A rules is a yellow card offence, Gervinho slapped Barton in the face, which by F.A rules is a red card. Yes he may have over reacted but so did Arsenal to the whole situation. I mean what the **** was the keeper doing all the way up there, there was no need for him to get involved and rightfully got a yellow card for it.

Song stamped on Barton and that went unnoticed, and hasnt been mentioned that much, if that was Barton the hatred would have been straight out for him, "he's a thug, shouldnt be playing football" and all that **** but because it happened to him, not a thing and I hope the F.A look into and give him a 3 game suspension because the ref didnt see it.

Lol, just lol. You can kill someone if they try to kill you?

you would still get sent to prison for that. It would still be classed as murder unless it was something like they came at you with a knife, there was a tussle and it stabbed him. That would be self defence but if I was coming towards you with a knife and you grabbed a gun and shot me, you couldnt turn around and go he was going to kill me. You would get done for murder!

Barton didnt assault him. He grabbed him, Gervinho could have pushed him away in the chest and that would have been a yellow card. There was no reason for him to slap him.

Forgot to mention in my last post as well that when Tiote got booked Arron Ramsey is a little **** and a diving ***** too. Yes it was a yellow card, quite rightly but Ramsey sat on the floor looking at the ref and as soon as the yellow card was shown, he was up again running around. Players like this are ruining the game.

Arsenal should be ashamed of them selves after yesterdays diving antics and foul play

Actually thats not entirely true and its the very defence Steven Gerrards lawyers used to find him innocent.

If you believe you are under threat that is the defence for the action you take.

For example if you pulled a gun on me and i shot you based on that and then it turned out that your "gun" was a water pistol my defence would be that i thought i was going to be killed even if the reality was that i was just going to get wet.
