Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [13th - 15th August 2011]

Bloody hell only been two games and you haven't played anyone good yet :p

:D

Try going from watching your team losing 3-0 to Walsall at home freezing in the rain at the Withdean (basically a running track on a hill:( with no shelter, just open stands) to a new stadium, plenty of money and attractive football.

I'm in shock! The sky is the limit

(even though i got terrible odds for Brighton to win the league, i will stand by it:p)

Not a Barton fan but fair play to him giving stick to those diving masters at Arsenal, the sooner players start laying into divers the better because the refs wont do jack. Its either a foul or its a dive, simple.

Watch Wigan - Norwich and wow, they are both so bad. Hope Norwich ain't thinking they got a point against a PL side because when Wigan go down this year they'll be mid table at best in the Championship.

stfu arm chair fan, did you see the full game or just crap highlights on MOTD

jog on.

I think im going to give up watching football this season already. That was quite possibly one of the most ineffective games of football i've seen. I think i may well have slipped into a coma if not for the handbags.

Just out of interest what do people think about Stephen Taylor getting a retrospective card for obviously making up stuff he didnt see

Apart from the fact it was a slap and not an elbow, it happened behind his head so no way he could have known anything (and shouldnt have butted in in the first place)

Over-reacting (like Barton did) needs to be punished, but so does what ST did as well imo

(Have no issue at all with Gervinho being sent off, totally correct (albeit incredibly stupid of him, even after the "hauling up". Song was of course malicious and how it was missed god only knows)

Newcastle are understandably **** - but Im still surprised RVP is hanging around at Arsenal with really only Wilshire in his league of really decent players.....in the whole squad. If Arsenal dont struggle this season it will be a miracle, as with RVP missing a lot of games as usual I cant see them winning many games at all (even with Cahill , who's own goal was really well taken as well)

Personally thought Liverpool pen was called correctly, it was a tangle of legs rather than an actual bad tackle so Richardson shouldnt have been sent off - but Downing was REALLY unlucky not to score what would have been a deserved goal on his debut ( a real cracker it would have been too). However 2nd half they were (or appeared from highlights) as really awful, and Sunderlands goal was a corker and deserved a point.

The sad thing is our (Arsenal) defence was quite good today :o

The only loose link we have is Squilacci, but even then he wasn't that bad. If he could reclaim some of his past glory he would be a decent back up. Miquel is the Spanish U21 captain or something. Rather good player.

It really wasn't, Newcastle just didn't trouble our defence, thats almost as bad as the people who think Song is great just because in some games his mistakes don't cost us the game, in other games when it does, people will say he had a crap game but people think he's mostly good.

He's mostly uninvolved, and against most top half teams, mistakes cost us points. Our defence wasn't terrible, but it just wasn't really tested. Personally I think, with Ba very uninvolved and seemingly no where near fit, their strike force was one of the weakest of all 20 teams.

With the stupid pundits talking about how dangerous Newcastle were with every corner/free kick, despite the fact that Carroll/Nolan scored more than anyone from such situations, in other words, they really aren't dangerous from set pieces anymore.

If our defence holds up against an actual strike force, be happy, they were neither good, nor bad yesterday though.

Wow, well done, you're congratulating a complete thug, and criminal, who should be in jail, for taking a stand against one player WHO HAD CLEAR CONTACT TO TRIP HIM, and he took this stand, by diving.

Gervinho had someone take a foot out from underneath him, people fall when running and one leg is taken out. Barton got a very tiny slap in the face, he stayed up for a second, then threw himself to the ground.

One player dived, his name is Barton, and you're on his side, makes you almost as pathetic as him.

I could say the same about you, did you actually watch the Gervinho penalty claim? There was clearly contact so not sure where this diving stuff comes from.

A few further thoughts on the Liverpool game (aside from the decisions).

First and foremost our lack of a proper pre-season really showed in our 2nd half performance today. A lot was spoke about our results in pre-season but that wasn't a concern for me, what I was concerned with was the lack of playing time too many players had (for various reasons) and that we'd be under prepared. We looked a tired side in the 2nd half and the difference in performance between first and second half was like night and day.

Even in the first half I thought Lucas looked off the pace and while we were attacking well, we never really had complete control of the midfield. Maybe we'd have been better starting Spearing ahead of him but it would have been a big call to make. I also thought that when Henderson came off we would have been better bringing on Meireles rather than Kuyt. The game had got very scrappy and we could have done a bit more composure on the ball, which Meireles could have offered.

Aside from the general tired/scrappy performance in the 2nd half, I though Flanagan had a shocker. Got caught out for the goal and had a generally poor game. While he's the 1 youngster that's established himself the most in the side (excluding Kelly and Spearing as they're a bit older and been around a while now), he's the 1 I think will end up being the next Steve Warnock. A good tryer(sp) that the fans will love for his committment and tough tackling but ultimately not good enough for Liverpool. Unless Kelly wasn't 100% fit then I have no idea why Flanagan started today.

On the plus side, I thought Enrique had an excellent game and for the most part I thought both Downing and Carroll looked very good too.

Partly agree though i thought Carroll only did okay shame his goal didnt stand

Love it.

Given that Barton also dived like an Arsenal legend, you clearly have no idea what you're on about cheets.

So according to Barton it's not okay to dive for a penalty (Even though there WAS contact on Gerviniho) but it's all well and good diving to get a player sent off? Hate the man.

Agreed. Just goes to show that not only is he a cheat and thug, but also thick as ****. If he had any brains he'd keep his mouth shut after incidents like this, but it just goes to show he's a complete moron.

Actually he is probably right.

The act that led to Gervinho being sent off WAS a red card ie he raised his hand and made contact. Bartons reaction was simply to show the ref that contact was made.

When diving for a pen there is no initial breaking of the rules and it is simply cheating.

Im being a little arsey and i have no love or hate for Joey Barton but i think that probably holds water technically even if we dont like it.
