Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14th - 19th August 2015]

Lacazette signed a new contract on the 8th...

Just means he'd cost more (how much, I don't know).

Lacazette looked rubbish against us. He's got his rep through being the top scorer in ligue 1. well in 2012, Giroud was top scorer as well. So it's not really a mark of out and out quality.

Fair enough, but I don't know who there is (who is established).

The two Sch's just boss the midfield. Darmian and Blind impressed me tonight.

The Schmidfield. :p

Agree with what Souness is saying, more flair needed.

Another meh performance but there are glimpses of good things to come, Rooney looks a problem area (but as ever he can suddenly come good).

The defence is reasonably good, I don't see any huge problems with it, but Blind WILL end up getting pulled apart by a good team. Smalling was good again, as are the full backs.

As for the rest, as I see it we need a formation that fits: Schweinsteiger (who looks superb), Herrera, Mata, and Schneiderlin. I like Depay but he's trying too hard to score at the moment, but I'd keep playing him. I think with a striker making proper runs and doing more, we could pose a significant threat.

Awkward situation if Rooney doesn't start looking like he'll score 20+ goals this season...

Agree fully apart from the amendment

I'm content with that Utd performance to be honest.

OK, it didn't set the world on fire but we're been **** poor for quite a while, one step at a time. Keep grinding out wins and the good times will follow.

Disgusted at Rooney though, what a waste of space he was today, still on holiday by the looks of things. Echo the comments about the Sch's and Darmian.

Never going to come out firing when there are quite a few new players getting used to each other and the league/country etc.

Very worrying signs for me!

A year, dozen odd players in, same out and yet as a team the balance looks poor and individually there's some clear red flags despite so much money being spent.

Of course its early days but time seems unlikely to fix the core issues. A manager shockingly incapable of installing any confidence in his players or setting up a team with a system and mindset to get the best out of them.

The major positive however was schweinsteiger, who looked a class apart. He will probably have to sit through a 10 minute lecture about his choice of hair style however.

two clean sheets, a fairly stable looking defence and finally a class central midfield is pretty promising to be fair.

We just need a bit more flair/creativity and either a new striker or for Rooney to get good again.

An irrelevant dinosaur. It's going to be one very very expensive journey to finally the board coming to that conclusion. If by mid season you are still playing terrible football, you really should look elsewhere before he spends another few hundred million hoping to stumble across a side with some balance. He's certainly not the man to create the attacking fast paced football United fans have got accustomed to seeing.

I guessed in the fergie retirement thread you would go through a long period of inadequate managers eating through hundreds of millions trying to play to the standards fergie set. Again I repeat that I think what fergie actually did was taken for granted as being easy especially towards the end. Clearly what he assembled was genius for so long.

That's a little harsh after 2 games. Chelsea and Arsenal have hardly gotten off to a flyer either.

He had them playing **** football last year too. Hardly 2 games. Chelsea can be forgiven, they are champions. Arsene is also way past his sell by date. No one should care if he had evertons budget but he's spent an absolute fortune, I'd bet the football gets no more exciting. Time will tell, I'm just saying if they are still playing dross tiresome football mid season he should be moved on.

I think that is more symptomatic of football in general rather than just the top teams in the premiership. The most successful teams nowadays tend to be the most boring/workmanlike as per Chelsea last season. The teams that really shine are the ones that have that one superstar like Ronaldo or Messi, but not every top team can have a player like that, there just aren't enough to go around.

I'd pretty much agree with that. It's weird because LVG had a reputation of quick tempo attacking football and Holland played some decent stuff in the World Cup. I was excited about LVG coming but it has been no better than Moyes really.

I don't understand fans that are just happy with the 3 points regardless of how we play. Surely you want to enjoy the football you're paying to watch. It's just terrible though and for a few years they have been particularly woeful in the final third. Rooney is not cutting it as a striker, and we don't really have anyone who can score from a free kick any more.

Early season I know and hopefully the football will improve a bit but I'll be very surprised if it does.

LVG's man management and media handling seems abysmal too. Very disheartened by it all.

Rose-tinted spectacles, I'm afraid.

RVP pretty much single-handedly won the last EPL trophy for United. We've been pretty poor since Scholes retired (remember things got so bad that he had to come back out of retirement?), Vidic and Rio left huge gaps, but also we were never going to be able to repeat the Ronaldo days without well, some form of superstar.

The 'Class of 92' is probably something that we won't ever see again.

Being happy with 3 points regardless of how we play is comforting because it shows that the players are willing to pull their socks up and get on with things even when they're not working at the standard that they expect. What would you rather them do? Fold like Arsenal did last week?

It's not about being happy with **** football it's about being realistic.

I don't think playing quick tempo attacking football is unrealistic at all. For the sake of argument if Guardiola was the manager I'm sure the quality of football would be much better.

4 center mids... that's the way!

All through the tragic Moyes year all United fans on here said was it wasn't about winning but the style of winning. Clearly that was as much a BS cliche as "no plan b".

LVG's football is as dire as Moyes, especially when you consider Moyes choked and LVG has masses of experience at this level. For years I tuned in to watch United, they were always exciting to watch. It wasn't just about Ronaldo, prior to and after him they played some great attacking football. You don't need another class of 92, you have the means to take the best players when you see fit. The trouble is a manager that's buying them and seemingly not able to get the best out of them at great cost.

I can't say I have seen anything from LVG that would give me faith he's spending with any direction. Is he going to trot out the 3 month line again now he has a few more new players?

I think you need Martinez, a young fresh manager with great new ideas, snap him up before Barca do ;) Clearly United will be a force again, they have the means to get there, it's just how much money do you wan't to let this manager waste before he retires?
