Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 18th September 2016]

But the real standout player for me, both today and since he's come into the side is Matip. I've been trying not to say it but he's looked top drawer. He's been solid defensively, positionally always in the right place, dominant in the air and so cool and calm in possession. When he steps forward it's not just a token gesture, he actually looks to make a contribution.

Matip reminds me a lot of Alan Hansen, particularly in the way he moves and the way he comes forward with the ball.

considering Liverpool's tricky away games at the start of the season, they have had a great start to the season and I genuinely think will seriously contend for the top 4 places.

absolutely intense competition for the CL spots this season, will be very interesting.

Just seen the lineup. Xhaka on the bench and Sanchez up top again. What the **** is wrong with Wenger.

Who knows, if he plays that formation against Hull we're like 95% certain to win and his tactics he will feel will be vindicated. ie win with Sanchez upfront and he'll say "see, it can work great" and he'll ignore that it's against Hull.

This is the kind of game to play Perez, give him a decent shot at chances on goal, a good chance to get a goal and a good chance to gain confidence. Instead again we're playing a dumb formation which also gets the players more used to playing with this team, which just won't work against better opposition(and might not work today depending on if Hull play well, we have the lead but not certain we'll win yet).

You want to be playing Xhaka, Perez and new players as much as possible to get their confidence up, get them used to the team. The less you play the worse form you're in. It's easier for a player to gel with a team right when they join not after riding the bench and being ignored.

Ozil skying that chance like a mofo.

That was ridiculous from City.

Yup, Iheanacho looks something pretty special. His record at the moment in terms of number of games/minutes he's had versus number of goals and assists achieved is down right amazing for just about any player let alone a kid who is barely playing. Movement is great, finishing is great. His biggest issue is that Aguero is so good and consistent, he'll be hoping Aguero keeps picking up bans because he needs the games.

This year he's on 2 starts/2 sub in the league and has 2 goals and 2 assists, a goal in one sub appearance with one shot in the CL.

Last year 7 starts 19 sub, 8 goals from 28 shots(which is amazing for a kid with his number of games) and 1 assist. 3 starts 4 goals from 13 shots and 1 assist in the FAC. 1 start 1 sub with 2 goals from 4 shots and 2 assists in the CC cup.

He's 19, scoring in the league at an amazing rate and scoring at like 1 in 3-4 shots ratio.

City currently are an absolute joy to watch as a neutral, Pep has got them playing some terrific football.

Thing is, yes Pep is doing the right thing but they are just playing as they could have really any other year. KDB was this good last year, Sterling needed just a consistent attack to play with last year and the midfield needed Toure removed. Toure ruined that team, he was lazy, poor offensive and awful defensively for 90% of every game, then half the season he was meh for the other 10% and several matches a year he was brilliant for that 10% left of a game. But the team had no balance, it was inconsistent, defensively everyone kept adjusting for Toure being lazy about getting back and being run around so easily, offensively they never knew if Toure would burst forward or just watch what was happening.

They spent years without pace on the wings, bought Sterling, had Navas, but played games at Toure's mostly very slow pace. Without him the whole team plays so so so much faster which suits every other player on the pitch.

It's an advertisement for the fact that while a single player can be exceptionally special for moments throughout the season and maybe the best player in the team at those moments, the average is what counts. He was played for those 10% moments but it cost them 90% of the time. A player who isn't that good for 10% but doesn't hurt you for 90% of every game will improve every team. Same way Rooney getting a goal or an assist doesn't change how much he hurts the team all game. Without him everyone else would look dramatically better throughout every game.

Our record in these tricky away games under Klopp is incredible. I think we've played 6 games away from home against the typical big sides (+ Spurs :p) and we've drawn 2 and won the other 4. It's been the easier games on paper that we've came unstuck.

Another great City goal, KDB throughball but this time to Iheanacho who put it on a plate for Sterling rather than the other way around. KDB is so damn good and Mourinho is so so damn stupid for pushing him out of Chelsea, that will hurt Chelsea for what, 5+ years while he's there at City helping them beat Chelsea in the league.

I still laugh at the Utd vs City game, Mourinho pushes KDB out and tries to buy Rooney, gets fired, gets stuck with Rooney on a long contract at Utd thanks to his interest and loses because KDB ran the game against his team.

West Ham have conceded 8 goals in a row without scoring one now since going 2-0 up against Watford, wtf is happening to them. On the attack again, conceded to a counter, no where near enough cover back.

Iwobi pass for Arsenal's second was fantastic. Iwobi looks so damn good but, a huge amount of his quality work is in more of a no.10/striker like role. I said earlier this season before we finally got Perez that Sanchez upfront with Iwobi wide makes a lot less sense than Iwobi up front with Sanchez wide and running in to be fed in behind by Iwobi. He's bigger, stronger and better able to hold up the ball or operate as a target man and good with those give and go/one-twos as with that goal.

West Ham got a freekick edge of goal, hit crossbar and post in the corner and bounced across the goal and out, but pulled one back about 30 seconds later. I'll give you one guess for who scored the header ;)

EDIT:- Iheanacho has 10 prem league goals across 1 and a bit seasons.... from 14 shots.
