Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 21st January 2015]

To me that is one of the best Arsenal performances in recent years. Just because they showed discipline for the first time in probably years.

Arsenal have been pretty pap but have taken their chances and sat back. 10 men behind the ball is very hard to break down.

City have been laboured and uninspired.

Lol just lol.

Arsenal were brilliant, what game were you watching, away from home against a team unbeaten in 12 I think and arsenal defended as a unit brilliantly, particularly in the first half.

Come away with a 2-0 win at the Etihad.
Anyone who thinks that was in anyway a bad result is mad.

Wasn't lucky either. Each player put in a shift, and had the desire to win.
Arsenal can do it. You see them defend well in some Champ league games, so was refreshing to see them defend as well as that today.

I wanted Man City to stuff Arsenal today, but to be fair the Gooners stopped Man City playing and defended brilliantly. They didn't really get a sniff. First time Arsnela have played like that ina long time and deserved the win.

West Ham beat Man City the same way, sat back and hit them on the break, when we had fast players in the team.

To an extent, but there's a difference between being pap and not being perfect. Teams can always do better, but to stop City playing at home and being clinical enough to score two on the counter is an excellent performance.

I don't want to sound mean spirited but that was more a case of city being disastrously below par than arsenal being amazing.

Do you think arsenal would have won if they had played exactly the same game but against Chelsea?

I think arsenal would have been malled if they gave up that much possession against Chelsea. Given that city and Chelsea are pretty inseperable on their day I just think it was a case of city being poor rather than arsenal being amazing.

It is still a great result for arsenal.

I would argue that City were poor as Arsenal cut them off. Apart from when Zabaleta bombs on, City are fantastic at going through the middle but weak down the flanks. Arsenal cut everything out through the middle, and funnelled their attacks wide. City weren't poor (largely) because they had an off day, but because Arsenal stopped them playing, although I appreciate that City would have been stronger with Yaya.

Chelsea are different. If you cut them off down the middle, they'll go around you with Hazard and Willian. While they're not a million miles better than City when both teams are at full strength, Chelsea are so much more varied which makes them a much tougher proposition.

This.

I'm still waiting for the weekly DM dissertation, no matter what happens it's always about how poor the other side is rather than any sort of credit given to Arsenal. I'm not disputing City were poor today by the way, but Arsenal still played their part.

I thought Dzeko should have started, he'd probably have created a lot more problems for Arsenal especially as City had something like 15 corners.

First time as a saints I can remember hoping arsenal loose to increase our chances of champions league action! Disappointed City failed to deliver but impressed with that arsenal performance!

Absolutely stunned about that result, never thought Arsenal were capable of that but fair play - really the only team at the races. City just didn't really look up for it. Whether it was Aguerro recently back from the injury, Yaya being away at the ACoN or a combination of things but its days like today that convince me that City will not win the title this season.

Whether this is good for United or not (as they have moved closer to 2nd, while 5th is just on their tale too) is hard to work out - they have a hard game away at WHU (after Cambridge in the FAC) but what should then be a couple of reasonably easy games to hopefully go on a run as long as LvG ditches the **** that is 3-5-2 (and the waste of space that is Fellaini, and choose a midfielder that can actually control the ball)

Fantastic result for Arsenal today, played like a completely different team!
Without going over what every one else has said, there is one major down side to all this.
Wenger will now be too confident in his squad and defense and now not buy anyone in the January transfer market :(

If he got them playing as a team like that more often, signings wouldn't be anywhere near as important. Does my head in the way the team is set up so often, with absolutely no protection of the back four.
