Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 21st January 2015]

I came here to see if drunkenmaster had made a load of negative comments about a borderline faultless Arsenal performance and was not disappointed. I don't understand how any Arsenal fan can take away anything but delight from that victory. It was an incredible away win against a smashing team that could have broken through anyone had Coquelin not been there to be the absolute machine that he is.

I don't want to sound mean spirited but that was more a case of city being disastrously below par than arsenal being amazing.

Do you think arsenal would have won if they had played exactly the same game but against Chelsea?

I think arsenal would have been malled if they gave up that much possession against Chelsea. Given that city and Chelsea are pretty inseperable on their day I just think it was a case of city being poor rather than arsenal being amazing.

It is still a great result for arsenal.

Well who knows, but I think that's very unfair on arsenal, every player put a shift in defensively and the work rate of every player was immense, you only have to look at how exhausted some of the players were at the end.
You say man city were below par but that was in part due to the fact arsenal never allowed players like silva time on the ball.

In the early parts of the second half arsenal began to leave more space, which you could then see man city in more dangerous areas, until arsenal went back to a more disciplined shape like the first half.

Simply put arsenal stopped man city's dangerous players like silva performing.

It's been a long time since arsenal beat the likes of Man city and played so defensive away from home.

Also why would arsenal have been mauled playing like that against Chelsea?? In the past we have been mauled by such teams because we have played an attacking style away from home. To be honest your post does not make much sense, you have to think of the style of play arsenal have used in past away games against the big teams like man u, city and Chelsea.

Was it a great performance for arsenal or just a great result?

They effectively got out Arsenal'd by city and beaten on every statistic apart from goals.

it might have been a committed performance but make no mistake, getting dominated by the opposition and scoring from a couple of breaks doesn't make it an amazing performance, Arsenal are not Kidderminster Harriers at the end of the day.

I don't think that is overly the case to be honest. When we beat B. Dortmund, yes that was the case. City were not firing on all cylinders yesterday admittedly, however I think (as you can see from all the other Arsenal fans) we put in a much better performance away from home against a top team than we normally do! Got the result we needed, kept them frustrated and worked extremely hard. It wasn't just the win, but how we got there.

The reason that is seen as a great performance from Arsenal is because they finally went away from home, with a game plan, and stuck to it! Normally they just go and try and out flair teams, which quite obviously isn't working.

Arsenal were fantastic yesterday against City. Okay City were very poor by their standards (they are clearly missing Yaya), but that was partly down to the tactics that Wenger employed. I think it's harsh to criticise Arsenal for putting in a resolute and defiant performance, they were the better team and deserved the win.

Okay think about it this way, taking into account that the result is separate to the performance: Had Arsenal lost 2 -0 instead of winning, would everybody still feel the same way about the performance? Knowing arsenal had about 35% posession, fewer shots, a fraction the number of corners etc.i don't really see it.

I think people would still be saying that Arsenal went about things in a more sensible manner. Yesterday was just a much more tactically sound way of playing away from home against a big side like City. Stats can be handy sometimes, but the only one that really matters is the score. The fact that Arsenal looked solid and played sensible football for most of the match along with getting a result shows that maybe Wenger has finally learned his lesson.

I didn't think anything in this match would make me more angry than the Packer collapse did last night, but Mirallas has managed to. Absolute helmet!
