Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 22nd August 2011]

I'm not defending him. I just found your reasoning funny as I don't think you realised you were (by your own reasoning) also proving Chelsea have never been a big club.

Why is it a bizarre statement? Gustov's reasoning for Newcastle never being a big club was their trophy haul and of the only 2 trophies of any note that either club have won, Chelsea's record is the same as Newcastle's.

Imo, to be a big club you've got to have won the European Cup or at least won the league a lot more than 4 times.

It's about relative history. So you won the league 80 years ago, doesn't make you a big club. Being the top 6 for the past 5-10 years, does. You just have to look at Newcastle's recent history to realise they're a, if they're lucky, middle-table nobody team that occasionally shows some good players.

Liverpool and United are the only 2 genuine 'big' clubs in the EPL. No doubt that Arsenal and Chelsea are the two other clubs who would be up for consideration.

I think Forest and Villa fans might object to that. Heck, even Spurs have been more successful in Europe than either Arsenal or Chelsea.

Have I once said Newcastle are or were ever a big club? They aren't and weren't.

No point telling you as you already know.

Winning the league 4 times and finishing runners up 4 times is something Newcastle haven't come close to doing in over 80 years.

We were close in the 90's when we through away our 12 point lead, if we had won that who knows how that would have turned out. Chelsea only started pushing for the league when Roman came in and started spending his billions,

Something Man city are doing now. We arent a big club but without Roman, chelsea wouldnt be either!!

Well you're wrong because I never said Chelsea are a big club. In our current climate there's no argument that Chelsea are a 'big' club, but when you put things into perspective Arsenal, Liverpool and United clearly have a more impressive list of honors.

I also think it's wrong to compare the English First Division to today's Premier League. (in justifying that Chelsea and Newcastle have won the same amount of league titles.)

I think Forest and Villa fans might object to that. Heck, even Spurs have been more successful in Europe than either Arsenal or Chelsea.

Yes but it's not all about Europe.

:o

And I never claimed that you claimed they were. As I said, I suspect you didn't realise that what you were saying also applied to Chelsea.

Ridiculous quotation. I was clearly talking with regards to perspective and todays climate juxtaposed to previous honors. Stop being a tool and trying to bait me.

Chelsea are very static off the ball. No one seems to want the ball or make an effort to create some space. Even if your run is pointless and you dont receive the ball at the very least you tend to drag away defenders from the ball carrier

 :(

Bait you? You're just confusing me with who is a big club and what makes them a big club. Surely that's understandable when one sentence you deny claiming Chelsea are a big club and then you say they are in the very next?

Don't bother.

In fact, do bother.

"Big club" arguments are so lol... they're just cripple fights with people spazzing out over their positions. You get "big clubs" through history, and you get "big clubs" through recent success. I'm not saying either's the better position, just that when you have two definitions, it's a pointless argument!

Newcastle have never been a big club because they've only won 4 League titles and 6 FA Cups. Who wants to remind Gustov how many times Chelsea have won the League and FA Cup? ;)

As a Man City fan you would understand that mist fans are short terms morons. I was not even going this far back though. We were a big club a few years ago but ho hum. We don't have a billionaire so we are ignored. But Chrlski have had their billionaire for the most recent future. clearly they are now a "massive" club (lol)

The whole point of my post was nothing to do with Nrwcastle being a big club (we clearly are not anymore) but we once were. If you want to way back we can compare trophy counts with s good few "big" clubs. I just wanted to wind up the mackems.

Tetchy and touchy Cheldki fans because their club are going the wrong way now they can't outspend anyone are just lol.

And @ whoever commented on me nit contributing. Since when? I always offer a balanced view even at the expense of the Toon unlike a lot of "regulars" in here who are ridiculously partisan.

I'm only playing with Gustov. Unfortunately he finds it difficult realising when somebody is joking and being serious.

edit: "As a Man City fan"? Ask Gustov, I'm Utd through and through!

The ref is a pleb and Chelsea are well, thin on the ideas. But that's what you get when you put together a killer squad and then don't get new/younger players in over time. And when you constantly sack your managers. .-.
