Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [16th - 22nd August 2011]

Rotty was there really need to edit my post? It's been discussed in this very thread for heaven's sake and none of those posts were edited

What rule was I breaking there exactly

Chill out brothers, it's only the 2nd weekend of the Premiership, god help us when the Xmas fixtures are upon us

Great performance from Man Utd, Freidel was fantastic tonight, stopped it being a land slide.

****ing congrats to HarryPainful!

The first time this bloke has been mentioned tonight, and in the whole thread actually. Lost amongst all the trash and crap is a sensible post that clearly states a truth, but goes ignored because no discussion or reasonable comments happen in here any more.

oohhh :D

(edit - thanks........but no thanks!!!)

To be fair I mentioned Spurs gk in my long post that got criticized (sp?) because I had the audacity to post after listening to the match

edit
Spurs did very well for the most part for the first hour (apart from some REALLY long range shots ~40yrds +>?) but then fell apart a little and saved froma real hammering by their gk.

Your point? Where did I say it was just opposition fans :p
As I said, respond to them then.

But they weren't therefore our opinions on his performance are just fine.

Clean sheet under extreme pressure from the media and opposition fans with a very young back line in front of him.

I can't really be bothered having a big debate. All I'll say is that a keeper can make an absolute howler and get away with it and another can make a small mistake and it will end up with a goal. Which keepers performance is better?

The 2 mistakes he made today were worse than the mistake for City's first goal in the CS. Today he had a bit of luck that he didn't have vs City IMO.

friedel did impress me with his agility, quite astounding for his age but spurs have still the same old problems with teams such as united, we seem to lack a belief, there was one period where the possession for 10 minutes for united was something like 75% in their favour. i know it's old trafford but spurs are doing something seriously wrong there for the players we have in our team, that has to come down to redknapp imo, he's utterly clueless at times.

Better performance second half, both teams lacked the real creativity in the first, shooting from range or really not at all.

Welbeck till the goal, was almost completely worthless, Nani I don't think was good for the vast majority of the game, couple good crosses but meh. Rooney, same, was quite funny, that one nice move where he did the kinda back heel pass that worked, then he tried it about 5 more times and failed miserably every time :p

Young, good on the break, not good corners, still a threat and helped create space for others.

Spurs, meh, Bale didn't do much, VDV was really poor, passing, shooting, movement all off, Defoe, honestly I think the kick on De Gea should have been a red, he kicked well after he had two hands on the ball and just kicked him in the hand, honestly a bit lucky not to get a finger broken or something as he put his foot through pretty hard.

De Gea looked improved, though the first real thing he did in the game being almost getting caught in the box it wasn't a great start.

Anderson I thought was poor except for the goal, and honestly though he did finish it fine, it wasn't that hard, Welbeck back heel pass was really very good, fooled the defenders, the keeper and left them no chance. Spurs players were exceptionally poor for that, classic midfielder mistake, as soon as Anderson passed it, he kept running but all the Spurs players stopped, had they kept running it would have been quite easy to get to the ball first.

modric let you down. That and you need someone who can finish.

Onto United again, I really think England should consider a changing of the guard with the 2014 WC in mind. We're doing nothing in these Euro's but we could give some extremely good players a chance to gel.

This x100.

Getting the likes of Cleverley and Wilshere playing together now could actually see me excited about the national team for the first time in years

what a signing Phil Jones could turn out to be. Some very wise signings this summer.

Admittedly he could easily play for 10 - 15 years, so its impossible to really say, but I would still be tempted to say "....HAS turned out to be"

A 19 yo reading and playing the game like he is already capable of doing should be a world class centre-half before long (and to have Smalling / Jones combo availalbe at such a young age for such a moderate sum is incredible imo)

As part of a three? If so with who as the more defensive player - Im just thinking wouldnt that be too attack minded if it was part of a four with two wide players?
totally agree with DanH /you though on Euro/WC thoughts

With the Euro's coming up I can't see big changes just yet but if Jones keeps playing like he has, it will be hard to see Ferdinand getting back into the Utd or England side.

Before I get screamed at, I'm not having a pop at Ferdinand! However with his fitness problems, it might be better for Jones + Vidic and Jones + Terry to have a run of games together, as it looks like that will be Utd & Englands CB pairings for the next few years.

I'm a tad high(migraine painkillers not "fun" high) but the only really important save I remember him making was the Rooney freekick, and I'm not 100% sure that was going in anyway as it was curling away and really close to the post.

Other than that, Utd's shooting was pretty damn tame, with missing the target being closer than really straight at Freidel. He's a great keeper, I just don't think/remember him making a whole bunch of game winning saves. LIke Youngs header going just wide, Rooney missing a tap in, etc, etc, it was Utd missing great chances rather than Freidel
